Discussion on IC mounts
#61
Summoning isn't really that complicated for most warlocks, most of the rituals to use said creature have already been done, and that's what takes time. The actual summoning is quick.

.. that still doesn't mean that the dreadsteed is "OP," especially since it's a class-given mount.

It would also be tedious to tell players that they can't use this particular mount that is given to them because of the flavor text of something that's no longer in game.

Then why wouldn't that count the same for dragons? They can just easily be obtained In game too. But differs in lore.

You have to go out of your way to buy dragons and they are kind of hefty to get OOC.

The steed is given to you automatically by the trainer. It is something that is part of your class.

Because dragons aren't summoned, they are tamed. The likelyhood of taming a dragon is quite slim. As for demons? That's kinda what that class does all the time.

Summoning not, but attracting one of the Dreadsteeds wouldn't be easy at all.

The difference between the two's largely based on this:

Warlock mounts are given to them by default based solely on their class. Dragons are purchased and not readily available by default to everyone.

Warlock minions and mounts have been "simplified" in a way so to make it plausible to actually use them. Sure, settlements won't turn a blind eye to someone riding a demonic on-fire horse about in public, but the summoning time for all the demons a Warlock has access to is drastically reduced from the ritualistic kind you read about elsewhere. ... Because otherwise the Warlock class would be rendered useless unless they're ready to sacrifice everything and stay out of cities just to be able to be battle-ready.

You could also consider that... The part that takes the most time for the Warlock class is to bind and make contracts with the demons that they use. Summoning them to their side after the binding isn't that taxing, nor does it take very long since the connection's already been made. That's the explanation I believe a lot of Warlocks use for their minions, anyway. Just like some other characters just whistle to make their own mounts/pets come running because they were stationed just outside the inn, or out of town.

Rambleramble.

(So, really, Warlock minions/mounts are just "called over", like other pets and mounts. The ritual to bind them has been made elsewhere, and that ritual doesn't have to be done over and over again. Just once. Unless the minion is "killed", at which point a binding ritual most likely needs to be performed again to summon them back from the Twisting Nether.)

I didn't mean the dragon thing literally,

All I meant to say, is that the Dreadsteed is very hard to get ICly, according to lore. So it shouldn't be RPed like any other mount (Just like a dragon). The dragon of course is more obviously rare to get, but so is the entire work for the ritual, for a mount you can not even use near cities, just doesn't make much sense to be just RP'ed like a pony.

yes, the ritual only has to be done once I know. But can the items required for the ritual be gathered easily? Have you read the entire quest chain?

It's most likely not very easy, no. But the Warlocks that do ride the mount ICly are more or less expected to have performed the ritual in the past, no matter the difficulty. Chances are they had assistance from their teachers or whichever coven they belonged to unce upon a time, if they ever did. It's very likely that teachers would pass on the secrets of this ritual to their students as a sort of "promotion", and it would be in the interest of Warlocks to keep these things handy for the sake of equipping themselves with the best tools they can get (in this case, the steeds).

If you were to perform the ritual from scratch ICly, I do imagine it would be pretty tedious, hard and dangerous, yes.

Mhh, if you look at it like that, it probably makes more sense indeed..

I agree that it's a difficult mount to obtain, just like how the Paladin's Charger is hard to come by. A lot of people roleplay a Charger as a heavily armoured warhorse instead of a divine steed. By all rights, you could declare that your Dreadsteed is a powerful horse corruption by Fel energies, like the Outland boars. It would justify the appearance without requiring it to be a Xorothian Dreadsteed.

Indeed, but that would be more akin to the felsteed right :3? Probably can be done with the Dreadsteed too.

Yeah, that's how the Felsteeds were created. It just depends which demon's blood you choose to corrupt it with and the volume you pump into it. Heck, you could even do it ICly, using the a normal horse at first and then showing its progressive corruption as you go from Felsteed to Dreadsteed.
