Guide to Grammar (WIP)
#16
Could have sworn I plugged Karl at the end of that.
Oh well. The original section was yoinked and edited a little for content, from there on out I haven't found anyone better to plagiarize, so I had to write it out myself.
Welcome to CotH, Karl. You should help me finish up this guide that I've been to lazy to arse around with.

(P.S.: Nobody uses 'luggages'.)

I also didn't see this up here when i looked previously so I though i'd add it.

People using plurals ending in Y keep placing an S at the end which is wrong.

For example : 1 penny, 2 pennys

where for the proper spelling you should replace the Y with IES

Proper example: 1 penny, 2 pennies
1 balcony, 2 balconies

This also works in many verbs as well as just regular plurals such as.

"the man TRIES to jump over the wooden log."
instead of
"the man TRYS to jump over the wooden log."

and
"The kite FLIES in the air."
instead of
"the kite FLYS in the air."

I'll say it again (if I haven't already), because it it one of my biggest pet peeves in writing. I mean really, all you have to do is push one extra button (that magical "shift" key!) and you're done. C'mon people.

The letter i, when speaking about yourself, is CAPITALIZED. This is not text messaging!

As in:

WRONG:

i went to the store and while i was there i got a pie

RIGHT:

I went to the store and while I was there I got a pie.

Whoops, see that other bit? PERIOD AT THE END OF THE SENTENCE. It helps so much. It makes the headaches go away.

....I'm calm now, really.

Scary. o.o

I usually get a first impression on the internet by the way people use their grammar, i'd rather take a liking to somebody saying:

Bob121: Hi, i'm Bob.

Rather than:

Bob121: hi i r bob

Woohoo grammar thread!

Temujai, perhaps you should check the post right above yours if you haven´t.

I´ve noticed that some people use the commas in an, to me at least, odd way.

Like this: Hi , my name is [insert name] , I love being here!

Pretty sure you don´t need a space in front of it.

Another thing would be that there is no reason to press return after every dot.
Much like that.
It, to me, looks really ugly.
Except when it´s supposed to be like that, for a poem as an example.

I love this server so much. I finally found a server crazy about RP and grammar.

Well, English is a lovely language. It should be spoken properly (or typed, as the case may be). I'd like to mention another thing to note about certain plurals, because English is also an odd language:

You can have oxen, but not boxen. You can also have houses, but not mouses.

There are also some other odd bits with some words that may trip you over because they sound similar or are identical to other words. For example bow/bough/bow and are/our.
"On Thursday we kidnap and sacrifice virgin children. Fridays we annoint ourselves with said virgin blood. Saturday night is poker night of course."

Nice guide, might consider adding the punctuation to the main thread. Also, about his/hers:

I take his pen.
I take her pen.

I see no reason for the 's' in hers. This, however, is a situation where 'hers' is used:

The pen is hers.
The pen is his.

I know this hasn't been updated in a fair while but I thought I'd extend with something that I've seen a few people guilty of.

Less and Fewer

These words are synonyms, yes. But are they interchangable? No.

If I had twelve pencils and Phyllis had nineteen, I would have fewer pencils than Phyllis. I would not have less pencils. When dealing with a count noun, that is a noun indicating a plural due to the addition of the 's' suffix, it is correct to use the word 'fewer'. If however I were dealing with a mass noun, such as 'energy' or 'food', it would be correct to use the term 'less' as in "I have far less energy than I had yesterday.

Also, on a final note purposely is NOT a word. You may say 'on purpose' or 'intentionally' or any other reasonable synonym. Don't just add a suffix and expect it to be all fine and dandy!

Good note there, Sasail.
I've seen that same mistake before.

But I think purposely is a word.
It's in my pocket dictionary and it was in the online Webster dictionary.

Also, I think this thread should be stickied or something of the like.

I think the newer (And some older) people on the server need to take a look at this, or their old grade school grammar workbooks. I've been noticing a great many problems recently, especially among native speakers.

I hope no one minds the Necro-bump.

It's been almost a year and I feel like some members need to take a gander at this.

I know this is a necro-bump as well, but there are a few missing items, I believe. Things I notice all too often.

1) The phrases "should of," "could of," "would of," etc. DO NOT EXIST.
They are "should have," "could have," "would have." (Or "should've," "could've," & "would've.")

2) The phrase "a lot" is 2 words. "Alot" is not a word.

3) "Rofl," "lol," and other chat-speak acronyms are not appropriate for RP. The Warcraft universe does not have texting, to my knowledge.
