This is a post, not to appeal for an unbanning, but to warn other users of this server. Hopefully, Kretol will add in a rule that states that if he eavesdrops on private conversations, i.e. "/tells" that, if he does not like what he sees, it can result in a banning.
I was going to IM him (Kretol) about this, but he has me blocked. Then, I figured I'd give this place a heads-up instead.
For those of you who don't know what happened:
Iseult and I were venting. I'm sure many of you have done this before. Iseult is probably the only person on this server I can trust to be THAT open with. This is a good community, but, like with all communities, there's the disgusting underbelly. Some people prefer to keep pent-up about it, and others prefer to vent. I had been up WAY later than I expected, and I tend to vent when groggy. I don't regret it, though. It keeps me at-ease.
Kretol then sent me a tell telling me about how swearwords in tells trigger a cache so he can see a bit of what was being said beforehand. He didn't like what he saw in this private conversation, said he was tired of our hatred and felt like we were doing it to make ourselves feel better, and banned us.
Kretol, of course, took "venting" as "hatred," I remember Kretol since playing on Silver Hand in 2005. He is nice, but if he ever comes off as "too nice," and there is a reason for that. While he can, thank goodness, handle critique, his perception between venting and hatemongering is skewed. There are a lot of people who belive venting IS hatred, and Kretol is one of them.
Hating requires KNOWING. I don't know ANY of you people outside of this server; to hate someone I've never so much as looked into the eyes of would be a waste of both of our times and against my own values, as unconventional as they are these days. All I know is your characters and what you do on the internet.
Sorry, people. I NEED to vent sometimes. I love RPing here for the storylines, but I can't get along with everyone. I would rather vent to someone instead of making pathetic passive-aggressive jabs at people. If any of you are worried about what I say about you in private, then come ask me. Got a problem with me? We'll talk about it. I'm grown up. Things bother me, I vent and I simmer down, and I go on.
To cloak your tells:
Kretol informed me that every time you swear, a small cache is recorded including a few lines of the conversation beforehand and probably after. So, if you say something you don't want the public to see (which is why you're using tells in the first place), and Kretol is online, don't swear. Or, better yet, play Windowed mode and use IM, but I know a lot of people don't like doing this for one reason or another.
Anyway, make of this peice of information what you will while this thread is still visible. English-language private RP servers are VERY rare, and this one is doing considerably well.
Because of where I am in life right now, I didn't plan on sticking around this one for more than a few months, as I'm going to be busy in February. I have been on sick leave, and this was just a small pastime for me.
Unfortunately, this isn't the first RP I've been in where the operator was concerened about privacy. This was a while back over Palace Chat; 1998 stuff. Needless to say, people felt insecure and started to dissapear once he started invading in on private conversations (and this client could listen to them live, as opposed to a temporary cache).
I probably won't be around to see replies, and that's perfectly fine. This thread is mostly to get Kretol to grab his balls and make a rule regarding this privacy act. It's his server and he can do as he likes, but he needs to list whatever he plans on saying is okay, and what is not okay so that people can know what they're getting into when they join CotH.
I can't speak for Iseult entirely except that she took the banning pretty lightly.
And if any of you think I'm lying to make Kretol look bad, please note that I can't make this kind of stuff up, and I would never go out of my way to tell a lie on someone.
You make of this what you will.
