Resurrection Guidelines

Guidelines for Resurrection in the Warcraft Universe

This article's purpose is to attempt to standardize resurrection techniques used during Warcraft RP, with most of the principals inspired by the D&D guidelines. Hopefully it will help clarify things and create a fair way to involve resurrection while still maintaining the semblance of challenge in the task. And balance fear of death with interesting RP concerning resurrected players.

So, starting off I'll immediately list the methods that render resurrection impossible:

- Death by old age - A soul that has passed on from old age is too fragile to pull back into a body.

- Suicidal With Intent - What I mean by this is that your character wished to die and did so of their own hand with a free will. Thus if you were mind controlled into killing yourself it doesn't count as suicide.

- Second Time Resurrected - A soul that has been resurrected before can be resurrected again, BUT! know that the soul and or body will be badly damaged more every time it happens.

- Undeath - Regarding undeath, when resurrected an undead returns to their undead state, it is impossible without a divine miracle to return an undead to their living form.

The following are general rules and information regarding resurrection:

- Returning to the world of the living is purely voluntary, and there is no spell besides necromancy that can forcefully return a spirit to a corpse. Thus, when being resurrected the character always has a choice if they wish to return or not.

- Immediately upon the commencement of the resurrection the target of the spell learns the name and alignment of whoever is attempting to resurrect them and may refuse to be resurrected on this basis.

- What happens after death is perhaps one of the largest mysteries that has fascinated sentient races for many ages. As such someone who has been resurrected has no memory of what became of them after death. Usually all the can describe is a hazy feeling, or strange dreams from which they felt they could not wake, or perhaps intense pain or sense of loss. The rare souls that become ghosts cannot be resurrected, and thus will not speak of the great beyond.

Effects of Resurrection for the Caster

Resurrection is not something that someone can go about doing whenever they feel like it, and it is in fact possibly one of the most physically draining spells that one can hope to cast. All resurrections with the exception of Warlock Soulstones and Shaman Reincarnations have a steep negative effect on the caster. The following are the symptoms of someone who has just invoked a resurrection:

- Caster cannot cast spells proficiently for a week, and after the week has past their strength is still greatly diminished for the following week. (Interpret this into IC mechanics as you will, though it will make most of your spells non-effective, and is intended in that way.)

- The caster experiences extreme physical fatigue which varies from being bedridden, to sleeping extra long each day, to being forced to use a cane when walking, to being unable to lift objects as heavy as a sword. It varies from person to person but each lasts roughly a week. It, coupled with being unable to cast spells -nearly- guarantees your loss in a fight during the week after a resurrection.

- Caster cannot participate in more than one resurrection every two weeks. Doing so has about a fifty percent chance of killing the caster during the ritual, thus causing it to fail, per each additional resurrection within the time frame. (50%, 75%, 88%, 94%, etc.) Each additional resurrection resets this two week limit. Thus if in dire need more resurrections are possible, but extremely risky endeavors.

Methods of Resurrection:

Resurrection & Redemption & Ancestral Spirit (Priest & Paladin & Shaman)

These are the primary methods of resurrection that will be used when attempting to bring a person back from the dead, and count as rituals, involving the complete concentration of all participants. Thus, this cannot be completed while being threatened; as your opponent would easily be able to cut you apart should to stop paying attention to the battle.

The key stats of these spells are as follows:

- Casting time: 10 minutes

- Must not be in immediate danger

- Requires some piece of the subject's body that was a part of him at the time of death. Even dust is acceptable, fingers, hand, or full corpse if possible. This dictates the difficulty for resurrection.

The number of casters required for the resurrection and the state of the body used for resurrection are shown in the table below:

____________________________________________________________________________________
Number of Casters ---- A Finger or less ---- A limb or less ---- Half the body or less ---- Full body
--------- 1 --------------------- N/A ----------------- N/A -------------------- Major ------------ Minor
--------- 2 --------------------- N/A ---------------- Major ------------------- Minor ------------ Minor
--------- 3+ ------------------- Major -------------- Minor -------------------- Minor ------------ No Effect
____________________________________________________________________________________

Rebirth & Reincarnation (Druid & Shaman) -

These two techniques are the same in that they are all instantaneous resurrections that have a relatively weak effect compared to a major resurrection, but as a result can be used during combat.

The key stats of these spells are as follows:

- Casting time: 12 Seconds (2 rounds)

- Target's body must be in relatively good condition, the corpse can have deep wounds, burns, etc, but at least half the body must be in tact in order to use these spells. For the purposes of measuring how complete a body is, each limb including the head counts as a piece, as well as the torso, thus there are six pieces in total. The body is counted from whatever is attached to the torso.

The target of the spell must then make a percentile roll immediately upon accepting their resurrection using the following table:

______________
1 - 69 = Major
70 - 99 = Minor
100 = No Effects
______________

Soulstone (Warlock) -

Soulstones are different from the other resurrections in that they are less taxing towards the warlock who casts the spell, but are equally less effective.

They follow the same chart as Rebirth does when determining major or minor effects of resurrection!

In regards to the warlock who creates the Soulstone, the following rules apply:

- A soulstone must have been placed upon the now dead character within one -IC- hour prior the character's death, and must be activated within ten IC minutes after the character's death.

- They may only create one soulstone per week.

- Activating a Soulstone takes twelve seconds (Two Rounds), and thus it will take two rounds for the dead character to return to life after they declare activating a Soulstone.

It is important to note that the major danger of one of the above battle resurrections is that the target of the spell -still- receives their negative effects and is also likely still involved in combat, thus they have a much greater chance of dying a second time in the same fight and no longer being able to be resurrected at all.

Goblin Jumper Cables -

Goblin Jumper Cables are even flimsier than the other forms of resurrection, and are extremely situational. Though nevertheless they are still able to bring certain individuals back to life.

The following are the rules regarding these cables:

- The body must be in perfect working condition once again. If you attempt to shock someone back to life with missing limbs, then they will bleed out and die from the same cause that killed them in the first place.

- A healer of some sort must be on hand and cast a healing spell immediately following the resurrection, to restore lost blood in event the body was actually stitched back together in some form or another. Note this is not needed if the victim died of something that would not cause them to lose massive amounts of blood.

- The Cables cannot be used in combat, or where there is an immediate threat around.

- The target must have not been dead for longer than ten IC minutes.

When someone attempts to use the Cables they may do so three times before it is rendered impossible to resurrect them via the Cables. This is reflected in the following rule. For the cables to work, the target must roll over 80 on a /roll 100 check. They may re-roll this twice, meaning they have three attempts to roll over 80.

The target then rolls on the following chart to determine their effect:

______________
1 - 69 = Major
70 - 99 = Minor
100 = No Effects
______________

Effects of Resurrection:

The following two tables list different minor and major side effects of resurrection that affect the target. All major effects are permanent, where as minor effects usually wear off. You can pick the minor or major effect of your choosing depending on where you fit in on the chart you were placed against:

Major
- Loss of prior memory
- Loss of major talent (sword fighting/spell casting/etc.)
- Complete reversal of personality trait
- Horrible disfiguring scars (No, they don't look sexy, they look disgusting.)
- Permanent physical weakness
- Loss of one of the five senses

Minor
- Temporary physical weakness
- Temporary amnesia
- Light scarring at wounds
- Paranoia
- Temporary shock (Loss of speech, far away stare, etc.)

Nice guide! Just one question... I didn't quite get it- if an Undead dies, can he return to his Undead state?

Actually, I misread the question.

I am also curious about that.

Move him into the sun—
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields half-sown.
Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.

Think how it wakes the seeds,—
Woke, once, the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides,
Full-nerved—still warm—too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
—O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth’s sleep at all?

Hehe, yes, it's meant to imply that an undead cannot die and then be resurrected as a human or something. They return to their undead form.

What if you commited suicide, and your ancestors didn't allow you in there pressence so your spirit lingers on the world (like in ghost form) Until someone ressurects you? Or what if you where in a craze as you killed yourself?

I think any suicide at all makes you un-ressable. The person willingly killed themself so the soul wouldn't wanna return to the body/life. Something along those lines, I think.

Then perhaps your soul will be in restless anguish, killing yourself out of a 'Craze' is still killing yourself, to get to such a point, you must of willingly wanted to die anyway.

So, as I understand, Undead can't return fully alive (duh!) but -can- return to their Undead form? Sorry for questioning this all over again, just wanting to be perfectly sure.
(Don't even think about it, Maulbane! :) )

Yes. XD Technically undead cannot return at all once destroyed, but for the purposes of fairness they can be resurrected in their undead form. I didn't think it would be such a confusing concept. Hehe.

I like this example from Blogatelle, by Sean:

Quote:Finally, the undead priest lays down next to the deceased and (if they have it yet) goes into Shadowform. Somewhere, the Undead priest's soul is catching the soul of the deceased, and putting it back. When it's done, they whisper into the dead man's ears, and cast resurrection.

Who knows what they whispered? Only the priest, and the resurrected.

Only the resurrected. They'd never dare tell anyone else.

Sometimes, they may mutter it in their sleep, while they thrash about in a nightmare.

In the case of loss of prior memory, is that all memory or recent memory? And is it permanent or temporary?
And thanks, great guide! xD

I was wondering.

Does a missing head make resurrecting -very- hard? Or does it work like other limbs?

:>

The problem I see with missing a head is that, well... it's a ridiculously important part of the body. To say that one can still be successfully resurrected without the head suggests that either the head can be regrown or reattached. If this is the case, why then are there so many characters who are played with one or more missing limbs? If the char were missing just their legs/arms/fingers/toes, etc, then that's a different story, but the limb itself is never regained save through technology (robotic arms, etc.), and even then I've never seen anyone with a robotic head!

Its a really nice guide but I read it when I was -very- tired and im slightly confused, can someone please right a list of things that I would have to do to use a warlock Soul stone?

E.g.
Make soulstone
Give to player 1 hour before death
Etc.

Please include any rolls I would need to do.

Thanks!
