I recently decided to disallow uploading attachments on the forums. The main purposes for this are to cut back a bit on bandwidth, ensure the greatest compatibility for if I must change server hosts (transferring all those attachments is quite a pain!), as well as limit liability for anything inappropriate uploaded that may be missed.

There is a very easy way to still share files, however! I've already converted all the links in the Downloads section of the forums as an example, and I suggest to sign up for an account at Box or Dropbox (that's a referral link - you'll get an extra 500MB in addition to the 2GB you start with if you use it to sign up, and it helps me as well if you install the Dropbox app too!). You can then link directly to files you upload on Box/Dropbox as needed, and you have a much larger upload limit as well!

Alternatively, you may want to consider checking out Copy, a newer cloud storage service. Currently, when you sign up you will receive 15 GB of storage for free! If you do so via the previous link (also a referral link), you'll receive an extra 5 GB of storage! (And as before, if you choose to install the Copy application, you'll reward me as well with extra space!)

For images, if you need an account somewhere I would suggest Imgur, as that seemed to have the least restrictions (and pictures don't expire unless they have no views for 6 months). A few other choices include ImageShack, Photobucket, and Flickr.

Note that this also applies to avatars! For the time being, it is still possible to choose an avatar from the forum gallery or link to an off-site avatar (which I would suggest Imgur for, as previously mentioned). You can also utilize Gravatar, which I actually highly recommend considering that you can keep record of all your avatars in your account there. You can have a central location to store your avatars, and any site that implements Gravatar will automatically detect your avatar based on your email.

When the forum conversion took place a few months ago, many users did not have their usergroups carried over (especially if they were part of more than one). In this case, they were probably simply reverted to Visitor.

The way the new forums work is largely automated. If you still have an approved Introduction, when you visit the forums for the first time since then you'll probably be automatically bumped up to Peon within a few minutes. You may not be bumped up to Grunt if you were part of the server before the Questionnaires were implemented.

In this case, please either just submit a post in the Questionnaires forum (it doesn't actually have to be one - simply state what the situation is (such as being someone from a few years ago that has decided to visit again)) or send me a PM.

For the first time in CotH-ian history, players can finally use a handful of commands! Granted, there are only a few, but they should be useful!
It will be broken down to base commands and subcommands. Do not include the brackets that are shown in the syntax. It just shows what you put there.

.account

addon - Use this command to set the expansion level for your account. For instance, if you need to bump down the expansions on your account due to being on a computer without them installed, you can use this to temporarily remove them, and then again later to add them back on. Syntax is .account addon #addon
Addon values: 0 - normal, 1 - tbc, 2 - wotlk.

lock - This toggles locking your account to your current IP address. Syntax: .account lock [on|off]

password - To change your account password, use this! Syntax: .account password $old_password $new_password $new_password

.addrpitem
This will add the specified id #itemid (or exact (!) name $itemname in brackets, or link created by shift-click at item in inventory or recipe) to your inventory. Only itemIDs > 200000 can be added! Basically, almost any weapon or armor piece will have a copy in the database, which you can use by simply adding 200000 to the item ID. For easier use, look up the name using .lookup rpitem
Synax: .addrpitem #itemid/[#itemname]/#shift-click-item-link

.bank
This shows your bank inventory! Banking on the go!

.commands
This displays a list of commands you have available to you.

.gm ingame
This will show which GMs on the server may happen to have their GM tag toggled.

.help
Display usage instructions for the given $command. If no $command provided, show list of available commands.

.lookup rpitem
Looks up an RP item ( > 200000 ) by $itemname, and returns all matches with their Item ID's. Syntax: .lookup rpitem $itemname

.scale
Use this command to set your scale (percentage-wise, in decimal format) based on the average of your race. You can use any value ranging between 0.9 and 1.1. Bear in mind that you can only use this command 10 times before you are unable to change it anymore!
For those that hit the limit, the only resolution will be a reset to the normal scale of 1.
The syntax is .scale #value

A spreadsheet of abnormal scales (as well as average heights) can be found here.

.server motd
Simply shows the current server message of the day!

.taxi
Temporarily grant yourself access to all taxi routes for your character's faction. You have a very limited amount of times you can toggle this (3 total), so be sure to discover all the nodes you can while it is active (until you log out).
Rest assured, any visited/discovered taxi nodes remain accessible after you log out.

Actually a bit of a minor change, for the most part. Henceforth, the max level a character will be able to be before having an approved profile up is 50. Previously, if a character got to 50 (or higher) without having an approved profile, the character would be locked until the profile got approved.

There are some perks to getting to and parking at 50, such as classes being able to learn the next 'level' of armor (such as a warrior getting to wear plate). I feel that being able to use all that your class has to offer before needing an approved profile will be a boon, for those that wish to take the time to level the character up to that point.

Again, this is a rather minor change, but I think a bit for the better!

Edit: Note that you must also be a Grunt to level beyond level 50, so an approved profile and grunthood is needed to level higher than 50.

We've had a number of people spamming various chat and RP channels, then making replies to the effect of "But it doesn't say we CAN'T talk about LOLCATS on Chat!" So, I'm here to spell out to everyone the rules on the use of various channels and emotes as far as what is and is not allowable.

-----

Spam: Before I get started, I'm going to explain the concept of Spam, which is usually text that takes up space on a player's screen for no reason, or takes up far more space than it should.

While I will be going into specific examples for the different channels, a general rule for ALL channels: If you have multiple things to say, fit it all into one message (or two if you hit the buffer limit.) You are not in a race. You are not trying to beat /trade or /lfg spam. If you nod at a group of people, emote that out, don't /nod to each individual person as this takes up too much space (see above, you're taking more space for an action than is necessary.) If you have the habit of hitting the Enter key after every sentence, you will need to get out of it.

-----

Say: For the most part, you should not be having OOC conversations over say. There are a few exceptions, but otherwise you should endeavor to always keep /say IC at all times. The exception is as follows:

1. If you are in a designated OOC zone (for right now, this is the OOC Cavern in Hyjal.)

Another note for /say is to avoid things that cannot actually be conveyed through speech. Do not put smilies in /says. While not always necessary, it is highly recommended that you spell out numbers, particularly those that are fairly simple to type (ten, one hundred, two thousand, forty-five, etc.)

-----

Emote: Most of the rules that apply to Say also apply here. In particular, no smileys (type it out instead. If you want to put a :-), instead put "So-and-so smiles.")

Custom emotes allow for greater flexibility, but there may be times when you want the accompanying stock emote for the character animation. If you do this, make sure you're not stringing multiples of them together, as that will constitute as spam.

Also, avoid emoting out the thoughts of your characters. We are not mind-readers, our characters would not be able to directly discern your thought processes.

-----

LookingForGroup: LFG should only be used for one purpose:

1. To look for others to RP with.

Anything else should be put into other channels.

-----

Chat: The following is allowable in Chat:

1. Discussions about RP that may or may not be going on presently.
2. Discussions about lore.
3. Discussions about the server and game mechanics.
4. Discussions about one's real life, provided it is relatively brief.
5. Greetings and goodbyes (Hello server! Hello UnnamedNewbie!)

The following is NOT allowed on Chat:

1. Lolcats, basketcats, Chuck Norris and his roundhouse kicks, Overlord Saurfang and his cleaves, lolwut, X socialite/actress is hot, X socialite/actress is a tramp, fish riding bicycles, O'rly/Ya'rly, IT'S A TRAP, Sailor Moon, The Picard Song, Stan Sells Everything, Cloudsong, u suck lolz, mattress surfing, and anything else on this intellectual level.
2. If it didn't happen to you personally, it shouldn't be here.
3. If you saw it on YouTube, eBaum's, 4chan, or YTMND, it also probably shouldn't be here, with few exceptions.

Anything else should be shuffled elsewhere.

-----

Adult: The following is allowable in Adult:

1. Discussions of an adult, usually sexual, nature.
2. Statements that feature strong language, but is NOT directed at a specific player.

HOWEVER, the following is NOT allowed in Adult:

1. Language that may deeply offend those of different sexual orientations, genders, racial groups, etc.
2. Language that may deeply offend those who may be victims of sexual assault.

It should go without saying, but the rules for respect still apply here.

-----

Barrens: The following is allowed in this pit of hell:

1. Anything under #1 of what is NOT allowed in Chat.
2. If you saw it on YouTube, eBaum's, 4chan, or YTMND, go here with it.
3. Ramblings that may continue on for an extended length of time.

What is NOT allowed in Barrens:

1. Adult/Sexually-themed chat (go to Adult.)

IN SHORT (for those of you who don't feel like reading all this):

If you feel the need to leave the server, that's fine. But if you throw tantrums and announce that you're "leaving forever", we will make an honest poster of you. Your account will be banned, and you will not be able to return a week or two later to say you've reconsidered.

And now, the details:

In the interest of preserving RP etiquette, please note the following addition to the server policies.

First, a discussion on choices:
We are aware that sometimes this server is simply not right for a person and they may choose to leave. This choice may have to do with the price of internet service, the condition of the players computer, the workload of the player, the family life of the player, the health of the player, the interests of the player, conflicting personalities, politics, the price of tea in China... any of these reasons are perfectly acceptable. No other player will (or at least should not) hold it against the player who chooses to leave. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about this.

Second, a discussion on manners and common decency:
The right way to make an exit from any server, or in fact any social situation, is to go with dignity. All that is needed is a quiet statement to those who work closely with you (in this case, if your characters are involved in their storyline, or vice versa). You do not need to state your reason for leaving, and in fact if it is for reasons of personality conflict or politics, it may be best, and certainly reflect more favorably on you, not to. If you can state these reasons in a mature fashion, especially involving possible improvements in a constructive fashion, that's fine. Not making a scene shows maturity, and preserves social connections.

That being said, there is definitely a wrong way to leave a server or social situation. This normally does not apply to physical reasons, such as heath or workload, and mainly pertains to the social and political reasons. If a player finds themselves upset with how a server is run, or with others who populate the server, they may feel the need to let the populace of the server know exactly why they are leaving. Discussing private conversations in public channels, calling out other players, making accusatory remarks, and sabatoging storylines are not only impolite and immature, they severely damage your reputation amongst those who experience it. As many roleplayers "hop" from server to server and genre to genre, it can be expected that a damaged reputation will tend to follow the incautious player. In summary: if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. You'll be happier for it.

Third, a discussion on the new policy:
If a player is leaving the server, that is fine, and is their choice. If they do so quietly and politely and later decide to return, they will be welcomed.

If, however, a player decides to announce their departure in a less mature fashion, by posting brooding statements in the forums and/or being impolite and immature in their farewell statements, public or private*, they will not be welcomed back to the server. This is not a statement that they will be rejected by the populace of the server, it is a warning that the offending account will be banned.

Please note that simply stating "I'm not satisfied with how the server policies handle (insert situation here)" will not get you banned, and may even be taken into consideration for improvements. It's not so much in what you say, it's how you say it.

Obviously, if the player truly has no intention of returning, this will mean nothing, and is in essence a neutral reaction. In the event that the player reconsiders and attempts to rejoin, however, they will be barred from doing so. We hope that this encourages players to consider their words and intentions carefully.

This policy is not retroactive, so if a player has made a goodbye statement and returned, they will not be banned. However, from now on this is a zero-tolerance policy.

*This does not mean we are going to monitor player conversations, or that players cannot voice their displeasure to sympathetic ears. However, if a player decides to harass another just before leaving, either directly or indirectly, it will more than likely come to surface and reflect very poorly.

To make something clear, if you want to go OOC and watch someone else's RP without being there ICly, you must first obtain the permission of all parties involved. You also cannot be in stealth without express permission (otherwise, if you're stealthed you're assumed to be IC.) We don't want players feeling uncomfortable to continue RP, and we don't want players spying on one another OOCly.
Punishment for just walking up and watching RP without permission is the same as harassment, as that is exactly what it is.

CotH isn't a totally "Blizz-like" server. However, it also doesn't have absurdly increased rates.

Ruleset: RP (though toggling /pvp will activate an FFA flag)

Some differing specs than normal:
5x XP Rate.
10x Quest XP Rate
5x Rest XP Rate
10x Money Drop Rate
2.5x Green Drop Rate
2x Blue Drop Rate
1.5x Purple Drop Rate

2.5x Skill Increase Rate

------------------------------------------------------
Despite the name of the server, Alliance characters are also welcome. I haven't had Alliance outposts or cities taken over by the Horde or anything.
Admittedly, most of what I add by ways of extra NPCs or items to vendors will first be done in Orgrimmar, however I also seek to outfit Stormwind in a generally-similar manner.

In addition, all characters can speak Common/Orcish. After all, everyone was able to talk to each other before WoW, and the language barrier was added simply due to the MMO setting (ie, preventing gankers from easily cussing each other out). Furthermore, custom emotes will indeed be seen cross-faction, so don't worry about needing to 'emote in says,' so to speak.
