I'm pretty sure that's how all of us ended up here.

I was pretty sick of retail by the time I left it during Wrath. I wasn’t entirely sure why; I just got bored, I guess. It seemed like the roleplay was stagnating some on my server. I had some friends, but there was infighting that cropped up, and bad blood that sorta sent them apart from one another. It was awkward. I tried to get in touch with them some, but it really wasn’t the same. They went inactive or just stopped roleplaying, and I was still pretty nubbish when it came to actually –playing- WoW back then.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=world+of+warcraft+r...ate+server

So I did the above. Still has the same top result as it did in 2009. In four days that I’ll have been on CotH for four years. I actually wasn’t active at all after I registered the first time. I got on after editing my realmlist and was afraid that I’d somehow get pinched by Blizzard for jostling between retail and CotH, and I was too much of an introvert to actually try and meet people. I joined chat, said hi, looked around a bit, but eventually I just left and ran back to do dailies on retail for a month or so.

Retail didn’t get any better, though. I palled around with the one friend of mine who still roleplayed, but it was just awkward. We were really more adherent to lore, and at the time there was this guild roaming around with inexplicable popularity that had their own island kingdom and goddess that was going to cause the Cataclysm. So dealing with that was strange. After a while I got fed up with it again. I pretty much stopped playing Retail proper for a while if I remember correctly, and got on CotH full time. Ish. I made a gnome named Jalhalla who was some sort of weird semi-paladin but not really gnome who fought like a knight, despite the fact that a gnome really probably couldn’t do much waving a weapon around on a horse. I made Rigley too, and bumbled around being awkward and writing journals where I scribbled down pictures that I thought were pretty funny, and hopefully made other people laugh to.

Rigley was an interesting character to work on, and I probably developed a lot of him here. Before on retail he was pretty inconsistent. I basically went through multiple drafts of him; at one point he was a former scarlet [because I was a WoW roleplaying noob, and that was totally original!], a beefheaded warrior who ran on lolrandom humor and behavior, and finally a diver. Just a diver on retail; he didn’t really pick up any of those stranger mannerisms he has now until near the end, and even then those were on the cusp of Random! humor up until I brought him to CotH and began to figure out his story.

Because a roleplay community means people are going to judge that more, right? I didn’t want to look stupid. I knew I was already treading water with my gnome, who stank of being ‘x race, but not’.

He worked out. Surprisingly, for being a character who was threatened with being shanked shortly after being out the gate. I nudged him slowly into roleplay, getting him put into a Gnomeregan guild [where he was distanced from, reasonably so for being just –weird-], and later I put him in Shipwrecked. And somehow, I actually managed to get him out there interacting with people and being his oddball self. He made a raft, it fell apart, and then he went through his slow mental degradation while trying to be chummy with people.
There were also GMs there. They terrified me. I was pretty sure I was going to get banned or told to leave at some point. Because that’s how I roll.

Fun times.

Wilt was my next ‘main character’ Or maybe Jovana. Then Endling, though I deleted her after not really knowing what to do with her. I joined the Bloodsworn Honorguard and met cool people. BrutalSkars, ChampionMouse, Hawk, Esthrunil, DannyHero, Clovis, Krilari, Loxmardin, Apheteros, I’m probably omitting a ton of people. So I won’t try to say that list is complete. I had a lot of fun. We rolled around Northrend and fought stuff. I got to blow up undead with cleaning supplies, and beat down a blue drakanoid boss with a broom.

It was fun. I had a lot of fun. Then one day I was told I was getting banned.

...Which was a joke. Instead I was being asked to be a GM. I had pretty much no credentials for this. I had tried my best to avoid most GMs, had a irregularly updated journal for one of my characters, and the idea of how to build or even do a simple command over a medium like WoW was a nebulous and strange idea to me. Effectively the only reason I can see by looking back through the thread on my promotion to trial was ‘hey this guy is swell’.

I had no idea what I was doing, but it was fun. I went through my trial period doing... mostly profiles, since that was kinda the lot you were given as a trial back then. We were basically forum helpers, with the caveat that one day we’d be ripe enough to be full greens! Or blue, since there was a differentiation back then. I chose to be the less higher ranked GM, because dealing with interpersonal issues and putting my boot down to troublemakers scared me. I figured I would go make events and try to build some houses somewhere, and maybe I could not get booted from the team for allowing something stupid through.

There was drama shortly after I was promoted, and I was deathly afraid of Grakor (who mostly hid in the GM ventrillo chat), but uh. It was fun. I learned to build stuff and started making things. I actually can’t remember what I did first. It may have been work on Azshara Crater; I know I ended up making an arena there, which was a neat little job. I know I was eventually given the go-ahead to make some place called Mimiron’s Anchorage, which... didn’t really work. Scheduling issues meant that I wasn’t around when the thing launched, and as a result it was put out to sail without its designer being able to run events for the thing.

But hey, it was good experience building. And while it became a running joke with how useless and poorly planned the place was, it was still something I was fairly proud of. The important thing was that I had ideas, man. Fun ideas. Ideas I could put my back behind and try and produce something with. I was really proud of that, even if they never did really reach their fullest potential. I remember writing out scripts and event lines—an extension to the Bubonic Bay event which was never implemented, a second half of the Battlefield: Khaz Modan storyline which I didn’t undertake, several events in both that series and the Stonetalon one in which I had planned out all these nifty little plots and missions that... well, in hindsight were cut for a reason, because you can only do so much with NPCs before the players begin feeling auxiliary or as viewers of someone else’s story.

I joined Kidnapped 2 on Endling and made her a character, then took her to Skin Thieves and tugged at heart strings. I started a new journal which eventually turned into a later aborted prestige thread, and wrote some of the sappiest and saddest stuff I’ve produced yet.

Man, that was fun.

I experimented with events. I tried out something called Dungeoneer, which was a fairly well-received if very time consuming idea. I ran that for a while before ditching it, trying out the aforementioned war events sometime after to try and inject some energy into the war aspect of WoW. It didn’t really work too well.

After another run of Kidnapped and watching a ton of Amnesia and reading SCP and Slenderman stuff, I ended up making Northwind. It was a strange concept which started with me just building a town. I don’t know if I actually asked for permission before building it, I just made stuff and then asked Kretol if I could keep it. It went through a few different ideas; it was going to be a player-ran town at one point. Then it was going to be my response to the desire for a ‘lawless town’ after. Then I started thinking about doing events with it, since it had becoming a fairly massive affair by the time I was done, and it was something I desperately wanted to see put to work.

I made Northwind, and it was probably the biggest success I’ve had through the whole run of my events and GM-ship in general. I ran single-person stuff at first, trying to be all introspective IC and creepy. Then I ran a big event [the only big event of my own] with Grakor’s help, and we clocked a ton of people into it. It was during break for me; I remember that every day during the entire week long run I would get up and rush over to the keyboard. I’d log on and check what people were doing, and I’d start playing monsters and interacting with as many people as I could. Every day of that event I tried to do all I could to make that place –live-. People liked it. I liked it. I was really proud. Grakor-senpai noticed me and we pulled his Skin Thieves event into it.

Then I just sorta stopped. I noticed that I really wasn’t roleplaying much anymore. A lot of my friends weren’t really buddy buddy with me like they had been before, because I’d been too busy to do much with them. There wasn’t any bad blood, they just sorta... drifted off. A good few of them did.

We got the Custom Patch shortly before the launch of Northwind’s big event, and I just went back to building after. I made mansions, forts, two cities, and then just stopped. I don’t know if I just burned myself out, or if I legitimately too busy with college and other obligations to spend time on CotH. For a while I was mostly lurking and building occasionally on the side. Then I was just lurking.

I was like that for a while. I talked about being unmotivated, got back into Retail and pined for the Catalcysm, and went on and off between projects and other such stuff. Funny enough it’s these more recent events that I’m having difficulty fully recalling. It’s probably the nostalgia from further back that has me, or perhaps I just wasn’t putting as much effort and interest into the more recent going-ons.

I don’t really know. But we’re coming up to the present. And there’s a lot of feelings and thoughts I had for my time on CotH, but I can’t say I know if I feel them much at all now. I’ve had the problem before on CotH of getting too emotionally invested in things. I became depressed with a lot of drama storms because I took personal responsibility for things. I thought ‘if I had done this for this player, they wouldn’t be leaving’, or ‘if I had paid attention to this, things would be fine’. It wasn’t my fault, not any more than it was the rest of the GM team; a collective failing of the whole, but not something every person needed to be accountable for.

But that’s how I am. I’m part of a unit, and when that unit is criticized I take it as criticism of me as well. The issue with this and the storms of Drama that came through is that this wasn’t an assignment from a teacher being evaluated, or a performance on my violin that I could tweak or improve on. I was being given complaints that I, myself, the sole person of Rigley, could not make a difference on. I could hope a lot that things got better. I could even try to push the team and myself in the right direction. But I think everyone was just slowing down, myself included. I wanted badly for things to improve, and tried to do so. But I would burn out again, and I think others did as well.

I could be wrong, but that’s my thought on it. We weren’t able to keep up, and I felt as if things were crumbling. I personally didn’t help things. I looked at threads that needed attention and let others handle them. In my head I rationalized it pretty strictly. I was going to college. I had a job. So when I got home I wanted to do fun things; build, draw, other such stuff. So I let other people handle the tougher work. And I just ignored when people needed opinions from the team. I saw private discussions I probably should have commented on, but didn’t. And then when drama happened, I blamed myself. And got depressed. And unmotivated. And then I did nothing.

So on, so forth. It’s still about the same. I do things, I come home, and I log in. I watch the Skype chat crawl by and think of things I should do, but probably won’t. I look at builds I have partially done, and at drama on the forums. And I don’t know where to start.

And I was sad.

This is five pages in Word right now. It’s about to hit six, and so far it’s been me rambling about my past on CotH and being nostalgic over things that I miss. I don’t think I can do it anymore. I’ve already relegated myself to builder only. So I guess that can be official now.

I’m probably done. I’ll continue working on outstanding builds if permitted [so that no one is left to pick up that slack], and may try to remain available if any assistance is needed in that vein of work, so long as Kretol allows it. But I think I’m done. I haven’t been roleplaying at all either way, and all I’ve gotten out of logging on to view the forums is grief.

I won’t even go into why. I could rail at the community and talk about how I feel the playerbase is treating the GMs, or how the GMs are treating the playerbase. But I’m tired, and to do that would just leave more of a bad taste in our mouths. So instead I just thought about when things weren’t so glum for me here.

Have fun, guys. Thanks for reading. Sorry.

Sorry.

Alright m'lovelies, here we go again!

So, I've still got a lot of building I'll likely be looking into-- that much hasn't changed. However, I've been feeling inclined to planning towards events in the future; some that would be nearer, and some further on until I have a consistent span of time to flesh them out as I wish.
I've got ideas! Many ideas, in fact, to the point that I want to run a two part poll here (or one, depending), to help me gauge what sort of interest is drummed up about the server.

I'll try and keep summations brief:

--Faction v Faction Events
Think the Battlefield: Stonetalon and Battlefield: Khaz Modan, if you were around for those. I'll likely be running event lines with both a Horde and Alliance perspective, and will be working on Horde vs Alliance stuff throughout the world. These will be player vs NPC events, as per my usual fare.
Some examples of places on my radar for this would be Stonetalon, the Barrens, Hillsbrad, Tol Barad, etc.

--'World' Events
Essentially working on progressing the lore in certain areas. Each zone roughly has its own storyline in Cata, and there are some we've definitely left open for advancement. This could include stuff from escalation at Mount Hyjal or Uldum, to smaller scale stuff such as the corruption of Wormthorn's forest in the Blasted Lands. Some of these would naturally lean to one faction rather than another, and some might take a more neutral stance, depending.

--Northwind
Probably my most successful events in recent memory. Northwind was a survival horror sort of event line, heavily inspired by works such as Silent Hill and Amnesia. It was grim. It was dark. It involved lots of eldritch creatures for which there was no solid 'defeat'. It was my personal project, and I loved the heck out of it. All told, I clocked more than -six days- worth of content on these events. That's 144 hours at least, all in one event. I was far from done with it, but at the time of my 'concluding' the event line I deemed it too disconnected from the world.

Well, I figured out how to fix that! And the Cataclysm has provided me with a horrible method of doing so. It'll be fun.

So, let's see some votes. What sounds good to you?

To clarify, this is not the venue to argue rules. I will attempt to explain these rules in my fullest capacity, but I will not argue over changing whether X class is playable or Y offense is viable here. That's for private discussion or PMs. That being said, feel free to inquire further if you feel my answer isn't sufficient in some way or another.

Right, so.

I'm going to begin some attempts at hosting single to five-man mini-events soon. This will be one of the minor components of the Heroism event line that I originally intended to run, but it was arguably the most 'complete' of the formulated ideas there.

Essentially I'll be running bounty hunter quests; both for lawful and chaotic characters in the way of seeking out criminals or taking hits out for assassination jobs for others. I can't be sure how often I'll run these due to my slightly erratic schedule, but I'll likely announce and call for those interested. These events will focus on hunting down and either killing or detaining a specific target, either via brute force or subterfuge. Some will be complex, others less so.

I'll hopefully be able to run some of these later today.

Alright, nah, I'm kidding. I know I haven't been too visibly at work, but I've actually had an ongoing project nearing completion soon. As some of you may have heard Reigen is building a blood elf noble's estate, and in contrast I've taken up the task of building an estate for Alliance nobility. It's been a rather large endeavor, but hopefully it will be received well enough. I'll have some pictures up once I can get back home to take them.

While I did want to run a few events, that's mostly been sidetracked due to finals on this and next week, as well as an upcoming trip off to New Hampshire come the 17th (and won't be back until January). I'll probably wait until then to make the events an actual thing, unfortunately.

So after some thought on the stagnation thread I've decided to post one of these again.

With a bit of a twist.

I want to narrow my range down this time before suggesting events for a vote. This process likely won't be expedient, but when have I ever operated at complete efficiency? Heh.

I've decided that in the interest of some 'movement' in the world that I would run this down as being specifically based around a culture or faction. I don't wish to make a neutral event, because that runs opposite to the direction the world is meant to be shifting in now, and I'd like to see if that climate can be made (though I don't believe my event will bring upon any of that immediately or specifically, to be clear).

In lieu of a poll I would like you all to post either briefly or in depth as to what you would like to see out of an event. Ideally you can give me all of the below, but if not just narrow it down the best you can.

Hello friends,

I'm of the mind to have a discussion. While I'm not very active right now, I would like to see the possible ideas of what could be done to get people like me drawn back in by the ongoing events and rp on the server, and how to find events and storylines to pursue that would be enjoyable to those involved.

One of the reasons I've partially lost interest over time is the matter of 'stagnation', and I assume that a few others have been affected by this feeling as well. What I mean by this term is a lack of energy behind the world around us; where everything takes place in either an isolated portion of the world. By this I mean events such as Northwind and the upcoming Kidnapped-- though there is nothing wrong with these events, they're not interacting with the world in any way, and the world does not truly 'react' to them. They could effectively take place in a different setting entirely and be fine-- they're just not tied into the world in the same way.

Again, this isn't a bad thing. I do believe there's a reason for it, however. As we all know we're waiting for Cata in terms of lore; awaiting announcements to begin pre-Cata events, and as a result not running anything overly attached to main factions in the way of world events. At waiting periods like this it becomes difficult to justify such larger and more lore-involved events, and the only thing that seems to make much sense -is- pre-Cata set events. The matter with that however is how long those could be sustained without Cata arriving; how long the Forsaken could be pillaging the countrysides of Hillsbrad, etc. I think some people are wary of beginning such campaigns and then being stuck in the in-between of them, which is a legitimate concern.

Now, as usual I have my own thoughts on what could be done. And since this is my post and my blog, I don't believe it would be right to bring this up and ask to create discussion on this topic without stating my own opinions and setting them on the board.

The first inclination I have is to just begin cata pre-events. This comes with its own issues for me, of course; I don't know how long we can entertain people with horde vs alliance action, as it seems to me like something that could quickly become stale if not handled with a lot of variation or so forth. It might be prudent to follow one racial faction in specific into battle each time (such as following a troll contingent or and undead one in two separate event lines) to highlight different nuances of the races in question. Sort of a thing to help get different races in motion I suppose.

The second idea...

Wait a sec, I need to grab something.

DISCLAIMER: The viewpoint about to be presented is from Rigley and Rigley alone. Other GMs do not necessarily endorse this idea, nor does this reflect the movement of CotH in any way. This is just Rigley talking.

So yeah, I'm going to jump off the eggshells and bring up the idea of custom lore. I've heard the idea of this being increasingly tossed around, and I would be lying to state that the idea does not sound alluring. I think scenarios for events could be made to somewhat more energize the factions-- not overly much of course as we've seen in the past with the Sin'sholai, of course, but world events which would have more impact on the world and its people. This is a difficult concept to put to words for me at this moment, since it isn't something we allow and not something I'm sure would ever be considered-- and I've found that it isn't the best idea to put much thought into restricted ideas for me.

I think there is potential here, and to be honest I'm a bit weary of hearing people say it's purely nostalgia goggles which influence that sort of statement. I don't even have nostalgia goggles-- I wasn't around for the previous foray. I do believe that we could create something without entirely losing the idea of warcraft that others know, or making the ideas to alien for newcomers to understand. I would like to say I have more faith in our creative power than to believe that we're not capable of writing an adequate follow up to the aftermath of the Lich King, even if it is meant as an in-between for this and Cata.

I'm not sure if I fully elaborated enough on that, but I'll depart from it to conclude this and get to my -actual- point.

So, I'd like to bring this discussion to the rest of you. Do you think the server has stagnated in some ways? Do you think there are ways to fix this before cata, or do you think we're simply stuck in limbo until the move is decided? I'd like to have a general discussion on this, and on that note I'd like it to be both on-topic and calm in approach. So, for the purposes of this:

NOTE: What is not welcome in this topic: 'When is Cata coming/why aren't we in Cata/etc'. Kretol is looking at cores still, and we have tested three. They have not satisfied Kretol in the way of stability or general functionality enough for him to wish to make the move at this time. Though much dust was kicked up about this in the previous testing thread, what that thread was created during was exactly that-- testing. And the results weren't satisfactory to the one it matters the most.

There's a time and a place to talk about Cata, but for intents of this conversation this is really all I can offer, and all any other GM can offer. It didn't please the admin; some of us think we should go on, others would rather wait, but it's entirely in his right to make the decision of when to switch.

FURTHERMORE: Let's keep things cordial here, yeah? I don't really anticipate too much hostility here, but understand me when I say I am serious about keeping this from becoming heated. If you begin to use hostile language, I will edit your post and place a picture in it. Likely of an animal, like an owl or something.

I'm serious about this, even if my response is in jest. Please don't do it for kicks, because we will moderate normally as well as humorously.

If you dislike the notion of the above disclaimers, well, this is my thread and I'd really prefer it not have the chance to become an angered argument. So indulge me if you please, otherwise I suppose I'll just take my cookies and walk home.

Right, so this is a while overdue.

Most of you have likely noticed that I've been inactive for about this entire month. While I could easily just write this off as being the combined distraction of Guild Wars 2 and college, things like that have never really made me scarce before. The matter is, I just don't know what to do at the moment, and I've been feeling severely unmotivated for some reason.
I don't really know what that means in the long run. I don't have any good excuses, but I will manage to scrape myself out of this slump eventually.

I've actually been looking to run a Skype text-based RP as of late, too. Mostly as a way to get myself back into the swing of RP with a setting I admittedly enjoy working with somewhat more (It's of my own creation) than Warcraft. I remember taking a lot of enjoyment out of working with these original settings, characters, lore and etc; even after I transitioned from text-RP to focusing mainly on warcraft RP I kept developing and tinkering with the text-RP settings I had. But, prior to now they really saw no use. And rather, at the moment that use is still minimal at best.

I don't usually specifically solicit for this sort of thing, but I'm becoming decreasingly demoralized with how difficult it seems to be to run an active RP. In essence I only want to find one person who can remain consistent, but I'd be more than willing to accommodate more if there was to be interest. While I don't wish to go in-depth in this post concerning my ramblings about my own work, the setting itself is somewhat sword n' board fantasy (with minimal magic), with a bit of a mix between the whole scheme of grimdark and noblebright. If you do have any interest just PM me and I can give you a link that has a good deal more information.

...Again, I'm not usually one to just come out and ask for participants at random. All I'm really wanting at this point is someone (or a few more) who can be active in the RP. We're fairly loose on our planning, so don't expect to be bound to a schedule or rigid system or the like.

...So yeah. If you're interested, give me a PM. If you're not, then thanks for reading regardless, and I apologize for my extended absence. I'm still around the forums, but that's not saying much for all I do that isn't in-game.

Evening, friends!

As of late I've been a bit under the weather, and re-adjusting to my new college schedule has proved a little rough. I'm not out, however; I'm slowly getting into the swing of things, heh.

As I've been idle though I've been pondering some new ideas in terms of stuff for me to run on the server. And here's where I come to an issue-- though I do enjoy Northwind, it is indeed a bit time and energy consuming. In short, it is difficult for me to run anything else if I am running Northwind events, due to how unpredictable the time is for them and how intensive they are for me to run.

But, on the same token Northwind seems to have gotten some -really- good reception; probably the most successful of my events thus far, in all honesty.

My dilemma falls to this. Should I give Northwind a break to pursue other ideas? My idea would be to throw Northwind on hold after completing X amount of the current events and then look into another idea.

I guess it would be good to explain what I would wish to replace Northwind with first, to give an idea of my intentions here. Effectively I have been rather inspired as of late (mostly by hearing about evil guilds and such concerns) towards looking to... well.

Not an evil guild. But one of immorality; less about seeking destruction or wrongdoing and more upon personal gain. Akin to pirates in terms of morality, not a cult. My desire is to resurrect the Hunter's Moon (formerly used scarcely for Dungeoneer and some other minor events), and see how the draw would be towards them. For those not in the know (that's most of you-- again, they were -never- used to the full intention I wished them to be), Hunter's Moon is effectively a mercenary organization of sorts, operating in neutral regions of the world mostly from the deck of an airship, lorded over by a wealthy 'businessman'.

While the guild was most heavily used for treasure hunting events in Dungeoneer, they were also involved in smuggling and a few more grandoise schemes, including providing heavy armed support in return for a fair sum of coin for organizations of less fond merits. What I'm getting at is a general mercenary / criminal guild, focusing primarily on attacking NPC targets with a slant towards the extravagant where methods come in. Parachuting down onto a noble estate to raid it, attacking goblin cargo ships with weather machines, creating various weapons of grand scale, so forth.

So... in a way, a pirate-ish guild with the aesthetic opulence of nobility and an airship instead of a normal vessel. With a corporate ranking scheme and exterior facade, while permitting bar brawls and promoting a life of decadence for those aboard. Basically a guild which I think would have a much more 'fun' and uplifting tone to it, and with a motive easy for characters to run with-- simple greed for gold and power.

So I'm not sure how well that was all phrased since I've been writing it with loud music booming in my ears (intentionally for the moment), and rushing since class is soon. But give me an idea of what you think, yeah? I'd be really interested in seeing some interest for this, since it's an idea I've had for a while and would like to see reaching fruition.
