Warlocks using arcane
#1
While I was telling some people on GMI about Shadowmage, I was told that one of their abilities can not be performed by them, because it'd be too close to multi-classing.
The ability was teleporting between shadows.
What I don't get is how can a Warlock be multi-classing, if he's using arcane? It's like saying a warrior who takes up a bow is multi-classing or a mage that sneaks up behind someone and stabs them with a dagger is a rogue-mage multi-classer.
Is Fel not simply a corrupt version of arcane? Fel is simply more addictive and 'pleasing' to use than arcane, but that doesn't mean that you can never use arcane again, right?

These questions are mostly so I could find out two things - can Shadowmages in this server do what they can most definitely do(teleport between shadows) and could one technically use arcane spells(like illusions) if he wished to do so?

Afaik you have to keep to your in game abilities, and with a Shadowmage(in your case, it's a warlock/mage who focuses on using shadow) has to abide to warlock spells. If warlocks could cast Mage spells, it would make mages feel underwhelming since mages couldn't cast warlock spells(otherwise they'd be a warlock).

Now, you do have that teleport thing where you set up a specific point as a recall area, letting you teleport back there as long as it casts and the warlock doesn't stray too far. You could try to do something based off that, but as far as blinking from shadow to shadow, that's a little far fetched in terms of fairness.

Edit: My version of a Shadowmage is just someone who uses the shadow spec from priests with arcane, so there's heavy limitations on what she can do since she cannot use Mage spells since she's based off a priest's spell book.

So you can not create a Shadowmage, who actually is a Shadowmage?

You're confusing me! Could you give me a link or source to this Shadowmage class that you're wanting to use?

Edit: If the class comes from the D20, like Wuvs says, then it's considered non-canon and cannot be played unless you can find a source of the class within WoW itself or another canonized source.

To be fair, the source for the shadow mage class (not the mob) and its abilities come from the D20, which is non-canon.

Playing a Variant Class allows some freedoms on class choice. Like Necromancers*, Shadowmages don't have a base class. Shadow Priests, Warlocks and perhaps Mages all could be used for a Shadowmage, each with their own 'tint' on the class. A priest could be more faith-based. Warlocks could be a better evoker. A Mage-type might dabble in Necromancy.

Two contrasting examples; Consider a Runemaster. Very flexible in their class choices. I've seen warriors, mages, and rogues off the top of my head. And then there's a Ley Walker. Despite the non-canon article saying mages, runemasters, divine spellcasters especially druids, shamans, and priests of Elune- on CotH they may only be used under the Mage class because only Mages can reasonably explain all the teleporting around they do; canon-wise.

I would say best bet is to pitch your idea with listed skills/abilities and see what comes out of it.

*Necromancers are restricted to Mages-only.
The true test of his choice lies forward.

Thanks for pointing at that Variant Class thread. I was under a false impression on what they actually are. This cleared out quite a lot of my questions.
