This was posted as a common bug.

Has anyone with a pet tried killing mobs around their own level? Even if you are 70 or 80, if you kill a mob that is close to your level but you don't normally gain XP, your Pet should still acquire XP. So if you were 80 and the mob was 79, you would gain XP, thus your pet would.

I could be wrong, the bug just confused me.

That post is really ancient. I'm not sure if that even applies anymore.

Hunter pet's gain level's normally, and as you probably may have guessed, loyalty was dropped a loooong time ago.

There was a bit of a buggy situation with some pets and leveling but, with the new patch and recent updates, all hunter pet's function normally.
