That's how.
But I thought they had Lazer swords, not lazer scythes...

(How can you be an ub4r l3wtzer NIINNNJA ftw with scythes, Maulbane, that sucked.)

SCYTHES ARE BORING.

A har har har.
TEMPLARS SHOOT LIGHTNING!?

!!!*WOO*!!!

... Wait, what? No!

Is it a prestige class?
They are a Prestige Class.

Templars are Paladins who sacrifice their skill in all but one area, usually magic. A Templar can cast Paladin spells in the area they choose at an increased ability, and with more variety, but generally can't do a lot of other things like wear plate, use shields, or cast auras if they choose to progress far enough that they have nothing more to get rid of. Essentially, whenever you want to become better at being a Templar, you need to give up some combat-related skill you have.
And the other way around? If you want to become more adept in combat (In some way)
Could you trade magical skill for combat skill?
Well, they only apply to Paladin abilities, so you'd need to trade some abilities for advancement in spells that give benefits to melee combat or defensive spells. Templars try to gain a closer connection to the Light to further their powers, often over everything else they know, but they choose what to ritually give up in order to gain power in something else. Spellcraft and smiting spells are just the most commonly learned, and heavy, close fighting is just the most commonly given up as far as I know.
I'd think that if you went specializing into melee combat, you would be a different prestige class. I am under the impression that Templars are just an extremely focused form of the casting paladin and if they sacrifice all of their magical abilities to be better at combat, wouldn't they just be a warrior or some form of Blademaster (to name another prestige)?

Yeah, I believe it's called "reroll into a warrior".. *snicker*
Or maybe into a Crusader. *shifty eyes*
We all want the Scarlets to get their own medicine, eh? XD
That makes sence. I'm just being all stupid and such.

So, a templar throws away something precious (Use of armor, shields, weapons etcetc.) to him, and by that makes him a stronger user of Light.
So...giving up something precious...is it possible that they undergo castration? I mean...some zealous monks IRL do it to be closer to their god.
