Conquest of the Horde

So yeah, I installed Linux Ubuntu on my computer and loved it! It looked really good, came with many very useful applications such goodies, but after 15 minutes I realized I have no idea how or if it is possible to play WoW, WC3 or even use stuff like ventrilo, hamachi, teamspeak, mumble or a number of other games with it.

So, here I am asking if anyone here has any idea, or where I could find a person who'd have a clue. I did install windows 7 as well but I'd much rather only use Linux if at all possible.

I did read about some program named Wine that could help, but I didn't manage to get it working, mostly due to cluelessnes on my behalf I think.

you could always try CrossOver; it's a nifty program that lets you run .EXE files while using Linux OS.

Hmm, that costs some money though, I hate paying for what I could get for free, hehe, maybe if I could find a pirate version of it.

Or you could, you know, use Wine, which is free, although it has issues with 9.10 so you'll have to get the version of Wine for Jaunty. I belive there's already a thread about this started by some sexy bloke...

Wine works great for me under 9.04. Adding repositories is a very easy thing to do as well. There are how-tos out there coming out the wing-wong, including one on WoWwiki, which I found most helpful.

Essentially, the process is this:
Install latest Wine from repository:
http://www.winehq.org/download/deb

Run WoW installer exactly like you would on Windows. Wine will find it and put everything in the right places. ALTERNATELY, just copy the WoW folder from your Windows partition - this is what I did.

Find the instructions to change your video driver in WoW config files from DirectX to OpenGL.

Double-click wow.exe. Admire the little snowflakes going across your screen.

It worked so well, I got the exact same bugs in Dalaran as I got using the same video card and OpenGL drivers on a Mac.
