There had to be some source of arcane magic on Draenor anyway. Not just because of the idea of warlocks, but because the Draenei lore states that their many battles on Draenor let them perfect the arts of war and magic.

Warrior and mage - Some draenei were dedicated to war and some were dedicated to magic but their focus makes them quite skillful in either. Their numerous battles on Draenor have helped them perfect these arts.

Now, where does this power come from? It's a plot hole. We never said that Blizzard employed skilled writers.

The novel Beyond the Dark Portal established that the vast majority of the ley lines found in Outland meet close to what is now known as the Black Temple. It's particularly interesting given that it was once the Temple of Karabor, considered a sacred spot by the draenei who found themselves on Draenor.

To be fair, Blizzard probably never intended or even expected people to react with such fervor towards the history of the Warcraft universe. The franchise has spanned five games and numerous expansions, comics and novels, a pen and paper roleplaying game, a trading card game, and an upcoming movie -- over the course of sixteen years. There's a lot of information to keep together and probably thousands of people working on all of these projects, a good portion of which probably had hands-on time with concepts that have shaped the Warcraft universe.

I would consider it fairly difficult to keep track of all of the minor details that have gone into, well, everything.

Besides, that's why the term deus ex machina exists. Blizzard isn't the first to rely on plot devices to move a story forward and they certainly aren't going to be the last.

Ahh that's true, the Draenei were skilled arcane magicians even before arriving at Draenor. There must have been some sort of arcane magic on the planet to allow them to use their powers, since I assume the Naaru only "power" holy spells.

I think we can agree though that before the dark portal (or even cataclysm), that there was no practicing azeroth-type mage orc, if that makes any sense. Their magic was limited to shamanism and warlock (fel/shadow) magic.
