Have you ever thought about what's out there? What's off the star maps, past charted space?

I have.

Humanity has expanded rapidly since the development of interstellar travel. They have discovered new wonders in the expanse of space, growing rich on the bounties of untapped worlds. However, with their wealth and achievement has come unmeasurable greed. Huge corporations pull the strings of prince and pauper alike, and they are unconcerned with the plight of the common man. Civilisation has devolved in recent years.

Yet even the wealthy cannot control all of humanity. Criminal rings have grown exponentially in power since the acquisition of new wealth, and pirates and rogue traders alike operate outside the policed state of official business. In a world without law, everything comes down to who you are and what you can pay to prove it.

I'm running a pen and paper RPG, set in a homebrew sci-fi universe. It could be loosely described as a space opera - the characters are more important than the setting - but not completely so. Your characters will probably have an impact on the world. We're using the Traveller system for rules, which is a simple and easy to learn book designed around settings like these.

The direction of the campaign and setting is up to the players, but I've got a few ideas brewing. To summarise other details: we will be using Skype and Roll20; we will be using voice chat, not text; there will be themes of violence and criminality; you don't need to know the setting or system; no, you can't play an alien.
Can I play an alien?
Can Rowgen play an alien?
Can I play a dancing stormtrooper?
