I was supposing more on the same terms of how one would end up using light, or shadow. It would be more by experimentation and trying to understand belief, though at some point it might mutate and fall outside of The Old Way, so I can see your point.
An Old Ways plagueshifter would be really interesting, too, and probably make sense. Although it wouldn't be a very experienced one.
