Sylvannas is using the Val'kyr to raise people back from the dead as forsakens, but does the general populace (horde, alliance, etc.) know of this? If so to what extent(high ranking officers in the military, spies, racial leaders-only, or the common every day man?)?

There's a quest in Cataclysm where Garrosh gets his knickers in a bunch and teleports to Silverpine with a large detachment of soldiers, has a bit of an argument with the Dark Lady over the Val'kyr, then leaves in a huff. I imagine that it'd mostly be the military who'd care enough to find out, but the knowledge of Val'kyr has probably spread far enough through Orgrimmar that anybody could find out should they ask around.

As well as that, Sylvanas took the Val'kyr with her to the gates of Gilneas as well as having them heal her at Shadowfang Keep, so I imagine that on the Alliance side of things the knowledge would be available, but only 'certain' for those in the military/Gilneans/Worgen. For others, it'd probably be the stuff of rumors rather than concrete 'here's the evidence' stuff.
There's a val'kyr standing in broad daylight at Deathknell. The Forsaken aren't really -trying- to keep them secret.
Deathknell, plenty of them in Silverpine, some pop up in Andorhal, so even the Alliance would learn about them. They're common knowledge.
