It was a quiet evening in Elwynn, but every night was quiet to Brother Thalvin. The hushed whisper of the leaves rustling in the wind, the light clang of bell as the cows prepared to settle for the evening, and the creak of the old sign outside the Goldshire inn were lost on the ears of the friar.

On the many occasions when he was asked if he ever missed being able to hear, Brother Thalvin never grew frustrated. His eyes would look soft and welcoming, his hands folded in prayer and blessing, and his lips a gentle and warm smile as he answered, "Better deaf than blind, child. At least I don't have to hear the question, but I can still see it coming." He'd laugh. The person asking would laugh, genuinely or awkwardly, or sometimes become silent before bidding him a good day. Angered or not, few would ever challenge his response. It was his way of testing their character, finding the wolves among the sheep and seeing whose faith and respect was dictated solely on their fear of the Light's judgment. Admittedly, he also enjoyed a good laugh, and the company of those who laugh with him.

On this night, there were no people to tease or to cleric to. There was only his room, an open window, and a leather-bound book, opened about four-fifths the way through. It was his personal prayer book, and in it sat dozens of verses and songs and, of course, prayers that he created. He was inspired by the calm outside, which in his mind matched the silence of his ears. Silence was peace, and peace in a land ravaged by the destruction of the black dragon was welcome now as much as any time. He lifted his quill to the page, writing:

Holy Light,

As a room remains illuminated
Even when we are not there to see,
So we remember that even in our darkest hour
The Holy Light is a beacon,
Waiting for us to find the strength
To navigate the sea of uncertainty
Until we find its guiding presence.

May every night deliver us peaceful dreams,
And every morning a new adventure.
We ask this blessing in your name.

Amen.
