Feedback for a derp?
#16
Woot woot! Bumping because it's been 2 months now. Ish. I can't believe my character list nearly doubled since my last bump.

Rather than go through another TL;DR list of characters, here it is copy-pasted from my wiki user page, excluding event, seasonal, and retired characters. In other words, these are the characters you'll see even when I'm not running storylines.

Kapre
Diwaata
Kantado
Mahen'tosh
Urameil
Jami
Bastos
Tibalan
Dr. Dino
Arnaldo
Mana'gal
Asul'na
Blanche
Officer Kogan
Aereal
Haydee
Aimee
Stefano

You can also include feedback on DMing, GMing, storytelling, or how horrible of a person I truly am <3.

Vroooooooom!

So... in light of Grak's recent post, I thought I'd request feedback of a specific kind: feedback on my RP abilities of a female-to-male crossplayer. I take pride in myself as a female-to-male crossplayer, as I feel this particular RP demographic is fairly small compared to male-male, female-female, and male-to-female RPers. This is also due to my background as a tomboy, and I guess as a rebellion against my upbringing at home where everyone seems to hammer femininity into me, so crossplying is really my only means of acting out as manly as I want to be without RL hostility. However, despite this, I am told by a certain someone that despite primarily RPing males, I have no actual manly men. That is, all of my males are feminine or possess too gender-neutral traits to be considered masculine. This honestly puzzles me because when I asked for (verbal) feedback on certain males of mine, they instead have to--quote him--"give up their man card" on virtue of possessing zero masculine traits.

It puzzles me because certain characters of mine do possess what is stereotypical (and even negative) male traits, such as sexual perversion and eagerness and muscle-defining activity.

The characters below are the ones I hope for feedback the most, but you don't have to give me feedback on all of them--just the ones you are familiar with the most. Spoilers are summaries of their personalities on how I currently RP them as well as concerns for them as males RPed by a female.

Kapre:

Spoiler:
Of all my characters, especially as my main WoW RP character, he is the one I get out of my way the most to ensure I RP as masculine with only a few "unmasculine" traits to balance him out. He drinks ale, mead, and beer very often. He smokes cigars and pipes. He's got facial and especially body hair, and his chest hair and mustache are my most favorite physical traits of his for me to draw. Thanks to Psycho's Rhozak, he works out via orcish regiments. He's a sexual pervert, finds breasts as his most favorite woman body part, and he is notorious for his lesbian fetish. And above all else, he'll always stand up for the little guy, has a strong sense of right and justice, and is protective of all under his care.

So why am I worried that he's unmaly at all? The reason is because despite all these traits, he possesses a few that seem to automatically make his masculinity null and void: he's a romantic, has more interest in staying home helping people with their relationships than he does going out to the battlefield, and he tends to run and hide at the first sign of danger towards himself. Between a soldier and a homemaker, he prefers to be the homemaker. He's tactiturn about his own feelings and emotions, but he really wants you to talk his ears out about yours. Isolate these traits from the ones I described in the first paragraph, by all means, he should be a woman. Right?

I don't know. I have made attempts at Kapre to be more pro-active in combat, but I am met with negative reactions. At the same time, he gets picked on for not being manly OOC. I guess it's a jab at my own inner masculinity, but I'm female, these offenses shouldn't exist. Nevertheless, it's a concern of mine, as I hope to make Kapre my quintessential masculine character without making him a stereotype or parody. Yet at the same time, i don't want to drop the core trait of his that really defines him as a character: his romanticism and the want to bring people happiness through love and family.

Mahen'tosh:

Spoiler:
GRAKOR, PSYCHO, YOU'RE THE REASON MAHEN LEERS AT GAY MEN. >:[

But in all seriousness, in Mahen, I'm not too worried about his masculinity being nonexistent. Actually, if you look into geriatrics and psychological development studies, you'll see that as an individual enters his or her senior years, the more androgynous they also become. The reason for that is because, as they get older, the roles of the home are 'balanced' out among couples and families. For this reason, it's perfectly normal for grandmothers to be more 'mannish' and grandfathers to take on feminine, domestic roles. Still, we're talking Mahen'tosh, a traditionalist orc from pre-Dark Portal Nagrand. By all means, EVERYONE should be manly.

While I do enjoy portraying Mahen'tosh as weak due to old age, I still worry about how I portray him as an old man. The 'dirty old man' bits of him is mostly for the sake of laughs. But leering at gay men despite being a traditionalist? I actually thought about making Mahen bisexual but never having the opportunity to have male-male sexual relationships in fear of what his family and clan would think. Kinda like gay/bi old men from real life who only come out recently as our attitudes of homosexuality have become less negative.

But I don't know. Maybe I should remove the gay leering, maybe not.

Urameil:

Spoiler:
I have very few worries with this guy, as many of his traits are deliberately gender-neutral. This is due to the character's background as an OC--he's a fallen angel, and I portray my angels as gender-neutral and androgynous.

Obviously, this is WoW, so he has to have some 'typical' masculine traits, which he does (pro-active, taciturn, etc). Nevertheless, feedback for him is appreciated, if only so that I can do more for Urameil than provide deadpan snark and smarm.

Kantado:

Spoiler:
This guy, it's obvious a female RPs him... probably because I RP him more less like a man and more like a boy, nevermind that he's 315. The main reason for that is because I emphasize the "loser" traits in him, something that most other RPers would never even think about RPing. Hey, for me, loser characters are fun to RP. I'm just sadistic in nature. I get a good laugh everytime a virgin joke pops up, everytime he faints at the sight of boobs, etc.

But feedback, yeah. Perhaps it's time Kantado grows as a character, but someone else has to teach him the way of manly.

Tibalan:

Spoiler:
Now him... him, I worry. I do RP 'typical' male traits with Tibby; of all my characters, he's the largest and burliest, most taciturn and soft-spoken, and the most dispositioned to violence when angry (atypical of a Tauren, yes). However, I have received OOC accusations of RPing a "fairy" due to being a fearful and shy gay person, even when I told the person that lacks the traits of campy gay men. Quite honestly, i was offended, but maybe I shouldn't be. Is a gay male a "fairy" on due virtue of being shy and gay at once? Should I get rid of the shyness altogether to make him more masculine?

This one, I highly value opinions from the gay/lesbian/bisexual members of our community, but straight folks can offer feedback and suggestions too. I'd like to know which area I can walk to avoid making Tibalan look like a "typical female's gay RP character". Because he's not. I don't find Tibalan sexy at all, in fact. Moocows are not sexy.

Dino:

Spoiler:
Ohh, Dino. Sometimes I wonder if I just made him female, if he'd be any different at all. His misandry is very atypical of any man in any culture, and quite honestly, I can't think of any men who hates other men (though I will say I do know a good number of women who hate other women). But as Hrodebert pointed out IC, the misandry becomes ironic when Dino himself displays the very traits he hates in other men--stubborness, impulsiveness, surliness, quickness to violence, and subconscious battles of whose manhood is bigger (seriously, the RP scenario in which this was pointed out made me lol so hard). It was unintended, but hey, boys will be boys, I guess.

Dino's misandry originated from the fact that almost if not all of the men in his life growing up were cruel and heartless and that the only people who did show kindness and warmth just happened to be women. Yes, this point of view is very unrealistic--that's how I want people to point it out. When Dino is not being a medical and engineering intellectual, he's being almost absurdly shallow and petty. I want people to point out his misandry as ridiculous. I want someone to set his self-directed sexism straight.

I suppose this is intended to be the reverse of my own issues of feminity--I tend to have a strong dislike towards "female traits" because the ones who are encouraging me to "stay in the kitchen" happen to be other women. I can't stand the enforcement of gender stereotypes, but at least women have a wider range of expectations to follow. Men are depressingly narrow in real life as well as WoW, and I suppose Dino is meant to be an active rebel without necessarily being feminine.

But I don't know. That's just my own thoughts. I guess in Dino, I hope more for feedback on his misandrist habits than how masculine he actually is. I'm comfortable with his level of masculinity... it's his misandry I hope for feedback and suggestions for.

Ah, one puzzler: Despite his ugliness and jerkassness, he somehow seems to attract women (as friends, mind you) very easily. I admit that I RP him as a "woobie", but he's more of a jerkass woobie than a straight-up woobie because he still possesses jerk traits--rudeness, impatience, violence, smarminess, shallowness, and pettiness. I'd like to know where to draw the line of sympathy, because I do want him to be more detestable. He needs more enemies, dammit.

Bastos:

Spoiler:
He's a parody. Shamelessly so. He started off as a blood elf parody in general, then became a "gangsta elf" parody as I began observing how blood elves are RPed. In fact, he was my first blood elf ever rolled (but not the first conceived in my mind), as at the time, I wanted to vow to everyone that I would never roll a blood elf EVER. Bastos was supposed to show exactly why... except a little less than a year later, I now have 5 blood elf characters I RP regularly. So much for the vow.

But masculinity? That's parodied too. He leers at women, is hypersexual, works out and shows off his guns often, rides a large and loud motorcycle, drinks, probably smokes, does mechanical stuff, gets into fights... the list goes on. The only "feminine" trait I can think of is that he still has the pretty-boy blood elf face.

I don't want him to become an offensive stereotype, though. The stereotype is meant for laughs, and in the end of every RP session, he would eventually get his comeuppance for being such an egomaniacal jerkass (Hawk's prank on Bastos has to be one of the best ones I've ever seen). Nevertheless, feedback is appreciative, as I don't want to offend anyone with how irritating the character is.

Arnaldo:

Spoiler:
Take Bastos' vices, Kapre's emotional family issues, Tibalan's social shyness and violent disposition, Dino's dirty fighting, and Kantado's chronic bad luck, then combine them all into a wiry Forsaken... you've got Arnaldo. Of all my regularly RPed characters, Arnaldo is the jumpiest and most mentally and emotonally unstable. Like Dino, however, he seems to attract people more than he makes them detest him. If you meet Arnaldo as a living human being today, this is the guy who would be seeing jailtimes, restraining orders, social services, and drug and alcohol rehabilitationi centers. He's the deepest end of the worst a man can go short of death... except, of course, he's been there too.

Feedback is appreciated for him because, like Bastos, I don't want him to become an offensive stereotype. Also, nothing about Arnaldo that I can think of is "feminine" except his narrow frame, but he still seems to lack the "man card" (it might be because he's "cute" in character design.. which is unintended, he's meant to be funny-looking). Suggestions on what I can add to him are appreciated.

Beyond all that, I can safely say that all my guys do have one consistent trait save Bastos: there is something hurting inside them all that it becomes a inhibiting weakness in becoming a better person. This is because I am extremely disintrested in the 100% confident and strong male--they're a joy for actual men to RP as because they're wish-fulfillments, but they're incredibly boring for me because, to me, there is no drive and story. But apparantly, being super confident and super strong in all parts of your life is the very definition of being manly and something to strive for in all men... something I can't honestly pull off without losing interest. I tried that with Stefano. It didn't work :c

No, I'm not looking for ego stroking or "it's okay to not RP 100% masculine males". I know it's okay not to RP 100% masculine males, that's not what I'm posting for. I'm asking for suggestions on which characters of mine I can improve in portraying them as men. Some have specific issues like Tibalan's homosexuality and Dino's misandry, but they are elaborated in the spoilers. In general, I'm hoping to improve my ability to RP them as men as well as individuals.

OFFICIAL MANLY MAN REPORTING FOR MANLY FEEDBACK

First, I shall address this, then each character.

Quote:wever, despite this, I am told by a certain someone that despite primarily RPing males, I have no actual manly men. That is, all of my males are feminine or possess too gender-neutral traits to be considered masculine. This honestly puzzles me because when I asked for (verbal) feedback on certain males of mine, they instead have to--quote him--"give up their man card" on virtue of possessing zero masculine traits.

Something I always say (and by extension live by) is that true manliness isn't WHAT you do, its HOW you do it. It is by this virtue that separates manliness from just being... a man.

SO ONTO THE MEN IN QUESTION.

Quote:Of all my characters, especially as my main WoW RP character, he is the one I get out of my way the most to ensure I RP as masculine with only a few "unmasculine" traits to balance him out. He drinks ale, mead, and beer very often. He smokes cigars and pipes.

The thing with Kapre is I never see you RP him do the stand up for the little guy thing, and that's a big defining element for being a MANLY GUY. Otherwise, his exceptional sensitiveness and dislike for fightan does firmly glue him in the "not so manly" zone. But eh honestly I don't think this is a bad thing because I like Kapre just fine as he is with his brazen frat-boy habits contrasting his soft sensitive core. Make more use of his JUSTICE SENSES is all I can really suggest!

Quote:GRAKOR, PSYCHO, YOU'RE THE REASON MAHEN LEERS AT GAY MEN. >:[

TBH I always saw Mahen'Tosh as one of your more macho guys. He's just, you know. Worn out and falling apart because he's an old sack of crap. But the guy still picks up centaurs and chuckwagons them, he has a great sense of justice and remorse for past illgivings, and yeah he's an orc shaman from Draenor. (and I say this as the guy who doesn't even like orcs too much >:V)

As for the bisexuality, that's not really a detriment. I mean, look at Vince. (though most bisexual men I know are decidedly less macho than he is... and Vince does have his whiny babby moments, but that's off topic)

TLDR MAHENTOSH IS FINE HE AND MADUGO ARE MANBROS

Quote:I have very few worries with this guy, as many of his traits are deliberately gender-neutral. This is due to the character's background as an OC--he's a fallen angel, and I portray my angels as gender-neutral and androgynous.

Urameil's got a great masculine aura about him. His large physique, his no-BS approach to things, these really make him stand out despite being in a villain role that places most male characters as sniveling, pathetic wimps who scheme to get things done. Not Urameil. He strikes me as the guy who would punch you right in the face but just doesn't think you're worth the effort. He's p. badass like that.

Also he's a terrible father figure which always helps.

Quote:This guy, it's obvious a female RPs him... probably because I RP him more less like a man and more like a boy, nevermind that he's 315. MATHIEU

AND KENNY

GO ON A LIFE CHANGING ADVENTURE OF SELF DISCOVERY AND COMING OF ELF-AGE.

On a more serious note, Kenny is the boy with the makings of a man. Underneath that wimpy, beanpole whiny exterior is a guy full of PASSION and THE DRIVE TO DO GOOD (see: him trying to save Isolia). Give him a few centuries, he'll make dad and Tikar proud.

Quote:Now him... him, I worry. I'd like to know which area I can walk to avoid making Tibalan look like a "typical female's gay RP character". Because he's not. I don't find Tibalan sexy at all, in fact. Moocows are not sexy.

I can't offer much insight here because I don't RP gay characters (I just can't get into the mindset, yo), but I like Tibalan the way he is. Not much more to really say, either as a comment on him as a character or on his manliness.

Quote:Ohh, Dino. Sometimes I wonder if I just made him female, if he'd be any different at all. His misandry is very atypical of any man in any culture, and quite honestly, I can't think of any men who hates other men (though I will say I do know a good number of women who hate other women). I don't have much to say about Dino because he strikes ALL THE RIGHT CHORDS WITH ME AS A CHARACTER because I am the biggest sucker for asshole jerks who have stupidly shallow and petty reasons for being the ball of loathing that they are (SEE: VADIA AND PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE ELSE IN THE VENOM VERSE).

Dino has self-loathing. That's all the insight I have to say. Keep him the way he is.

I also enjoy Bastos because he's just a parody of "gangsta masculinity" as a whole which I CAN NOT GODDAMN STAND I FIND SUCH BEHAVIOR ABHORRENT. The shallow, vapid talk, the obsession over maintaining good looks...

...

I realize now that gangsta manliness is identical to what is often considered "offensive" femininity. You know, the girl who always looks at shoes and cries when she breaks a nail. Only the interests are changed to "guy" interests (shoes become cars). They're both vapid, obnoxious, and and utterly contemptible. Goes to show that negative characteristics are not limited by sex or gender.

Arnaldo's lack of manliness stems from how big of a loser he is. Guy just doesn't get a break, yo. That combined with his vices and insecurities makes for a sad display of a man! Not saying manly guys can't have issues, but its about how you handle those issues. Cristovao, for example (though he's not really one of my manliest of men), has a lot of issues, but he hides it behind a face of steel. His hidden depths shine as a man who is conflicted with whats going on inside him, making his steel face a farce of sorts.

... Arnaldo just lets it all out and exposes it to the world for what it is. His issuies are for all to see, and therefore he is judged for his issues and the general reaction is MAN UP AND TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS, SON.

That said, I don't want you to change that about Arnaldo, because I love how much of a loser insecure bad luck chump he is.

Because like I said, I love miserable SOB characters. Durrrr.
Your stories will always remain...

I think you might be focusing on being 'manly' too much. Men don't have to be manly. You play your characters well, Immy, don't really need to change anything.

To add to previously given feedback, I feel as though you should practice roleplaying with only one character. You've this nasty habit of only roleplaying with two. As nice as it is to have a third character to bounce off of, I feel it might split your attention during situations where you must focus on characters being in different spots.

I've been RPing a lot more on Aimee, Stefano, and Kogan lately. Especially Kogan and Aimee. Katca was also saved from the scrapheap and made into a military general as opposed to an Orgrimmar grunt. I'm still struggling to get Aereal some RP, however. I'm considering making her a blood knight as opposed to just a priestess. I doubt I'd be retconning much.

Blanche is permanently dead, if you haven't noticed.

Also, Kapre as a spirit walker.

I hunger! OMNOMNOMNOM.

Also, don't be afraid to criticize/critique me as a GM. Really. I won't vouch a ban on you or anything, granted you remain civil, of course!

Also, I've been dualboxing less lately, unless it's to DM an event (because I need one character to be IC and another for OOC stuff). I wonder if that's good for those whom I RP with, or if they still prefer more double acts from me.

A quick little thing that I've always noticed. It's more of a pet peve than anything else.

Commonly I see you use "...???"

For some reason that tends to bug me. Personally I think "...?!" Looks a lot cleaner.

Otherwise, I enjoy how Kapre's come along so far!

I'm bad at this whole... feedback thing. x.x

No worries, Kril. I didn't notice that punctuation habit of mine, which is bad for an English tutor.

Thank you very much!

I just recently received verbal feedback that while my own speech is great, several of my characters have too common (and too modern/technical/medical/psychological/etc) speech patterns, which really makes them out of place. Also, that verbal feedback came weeks too late ;P. I was writing speech pattern notes, though some characters (like Kapre and Mahen'tosh) deliberately possess similar speech patterns. It depends on their background and relations with others. But it needs work nonetheless.

I don't like delayed feedback, because my RP IS flawed and I can't improve if I don't know what my flaws are. Lore is getting better, but not by much. I have been doing crap tons of writing, but even with grammar and structure in place, I know they're also flawed. Then, of course, I've been doing a lot of graphics as a form of IC storytelling.

So I'm moreso looking for feedback on the meta than on the characters themselves (though feel free to provide me feedback on my characters, especially Jyovani, who is newly rolled). How's my writing? How are my graphics? Do you like my event ideas? Do you like my involvement in RP? Do you like my RP, period?

Don't comment on my inconsistent in-game appearances and frequent event postponing, however. Please. I know my scheduling is bad. No need to critique that.

And, once again, don't be afraid to critique me as a GM/person, period. I won't vouch for your ban or anything like that. I'm an open and approachable person.

I'mma echo Cappn on that: I look forward to all of your IC posts. The visual Spirit Walking ones are great and some just downright chilling. I like how you convey thought processes in your IC posts as well.

...Sorry, I don't have much for you in terms of bulk feedback. Hit me up on the Skype or something and we can talk about it if you'd like -- that's an easier medium for feedback for me. :)

With Gnomeregan finished and the new year fast approaching, I would like to ask for more feedback. My currently profiled characters below are:

Spoiler:

Kapre, Diwaata, Mahen'tosh, Dino, Kantado, Tibalan, Jami, Urameil, Arnaldo, Bastos, Aimee, Stefano, Kogan, and Jyovani. Not picture is Haydee, Pulline, Imani, and other characters.

Pictures, writings, GMing, DMing, and derping are all I'd hope for feedback. Do feel free to criticize as well, and don't be afraid to do it too. Just be civil about it, please.
