Well, yes. But whether the impact is positive or negative is a matter of opinion.

An opinion that seems to separate players standpoint from a GM's standpoint.

Nope! It's a great place for people that are unsure of their profiles to post to garner opinions, or get help in regards to grammar. It's a tool rather than a necessity.

I have a short suggestion, that may work for both sides...

So, you can't comment in the profile in the main profiles section? Then PM the profile-submittin' guy in question and say

'Hey, dude(tte),

There's these fancy things here, X, Y, and Z that would be helpful to defend the lore/whatever behind your profile in X, Y, and Z.'

Then the profile-submittin' guy can take that PM's advice and present it in their own profile, so that it remains just them and the FH/GMs.

Would that be impossible?

How 'bout the forum helper/GM immediately moves the profile to the workshop upon finding something wrong with it, unless it's a really minor mistake that can be fixed quickly/grammar?

That's something that can be done already, Zen. It's just...since they can still post in the profile without going through a middleman to do so, it's much easier to post anyways, even though it's against this rule.

My point is that it's all like... "Another step!" that could be avoided by letting us talk in the profiles again. Yes, we could PM someone. Yes, we could do it all in the workshop.

Yes, it's another backwards step that makes the profile process longer. We keep on moving backwards instead of progressing.

Zen, I understand what you are saying. I consider you a friend, but we both know that is not like to happen. Not even from a vindictive viewpoint or anything like that. It's simply too much effort for most people to send someone a PM and give them suggestions and information. While it would be a good idea to do, sometimes it is better to have a second visible voice on the matter.

While I try to not undermine the authority of a FH, it can be hard to articulate, even in text form, what it is I want to say and what information I want to get out. Point in case; Xigo said exactly what I wanted to, helping my argument in that instance.

Edit: Damn these ninjas.

Why is there suddenly all this discussion about the workshop? I thought its utility was pretty clear - people can build their profiles within the subforum and people are allowed to post their input if they want to, making it a semi-collaborative effort. It also helps for those un-confident with their profile in its current state. Moving profiles to the workshop and back to fix issues seems like it'd both add another step to the procedure that ain't required and also destroy the original purpose of the subforum.

That's exactly the point. Except we get slapped on the wrist for helping out our buddies.

My specific problem was when other people would say "HEY, CHANGE X Y AND Z" in a profile as grunts, when it'd be meaningless crap that said grunt didn't know what they were talking about, and it'd confuse new people.

That's why I suggested privately that we tell the Grunts to not post that kinda stuff. However, now it's turned into "You can't post at all" and that translates to even if you're -helping- other players by providing back-up links or ideas to their concept that the FH's or GM's don't agree with or readily see.

It's not that we are challenging them, just that we are trying to show another point of view.

Maul, buddy, it's more about the ban against grunts and peons posting in Character Profiles outside of the Workshop. Basically the fact that everyone, regardless of what helpful or unhelpful input they have to add.

Honestly, that right there is the reason this rule was created, because it was getting to the point where new users were taking those grunts as if they were FHs (these grunts being the ones who are making FH-like posts - which yeah, they're often not that necessary). And since nobody breaking this rule is posting in that way, that's probably the reason nobody has received a more official warning about breaking the rule. And on a more personal level, that's why I'm sort of fine with people posting so long as they're A) not making a FH-like post and B) turning the profile into a big argument/flame war.

FH Posts are purple and have the ability to approve a profile or deadlock it.

Regular posts are just extra voices, for better or for worse, though a necessary thing IMO.

"I'm not sure X in the history is right, but I could be mistaken. I like your hair, blah blah, assorted other non-corrective comments."

vs.

"X is wrong, change Y, Z is not how we do things, A needs to be removed, and B should read more like C."

etc.

Also, I'm not sure if the Big Bad Voodoo is gonna work out. I don't think we've approved it on shadow hunters in the past.

Quote:B) turning the profile into a big argument/flame war.

Also, this is a big contributing factor.

It's kind of hard to do without linking to an example of one of the many that have been done before, and that'd be a little unfair to the person being used as an example. But basically, it's when a grunt words their post as if they have the approval power, saying things such as 'this needs to be changed' (notice the use of 'need'). Also, pointing out a bunch of small grammar problems.

An example of what's -not- a FH-like post is putting things into question rather than saying outright that they need to be changed. That's for the FH to decide.

An FH like post is one that goes through with a list of corrections someone should make, which can be more harmful than helpful. It isputting a list of changes that make it look like the person is saying "This has to be changed", when it's usually crap that the person doesn't know what they are talking about -nor- would they be required to change.

A -non- FH like post is one that says "Hey, my buddy here got that from this, also in the past this has been allowed specifically here with this link(insert url here)". Or one that questions something.
