Hey there :3.

So I was RP'n today, and my druid is of the 'Talon'. The person I was RP'ing with said Druids of the Talon can -absolutely- not transform into a cat, or travel form. -Just- a bird. Which is kind of hard when Kalimdor you can't fly freely without a flight path.

I was wondering if Druids of the Talon's cannot transform into Cats, even if it means you cannot preform anything special (Mangle) or do any special abilities. Or would my druid have to be 'of the Wild'?

They cannot, but you do have your own fighting style. I would suggest you adjust feral abilities to suit your birdly form, and when playing a talon druid... just make people pretend you're a birdie.
You can't even turn into a cheetah? But you don't have the ability to work the claws and retract them or that jazz? Just Bird, absolutely?
Well that's actually right, as a Druid of The Talon you can only turn into a bird because you more or less focus only on that. If you would focus on some other totem along with Talon then you'd be a Druid of The Wild, which is more or less a jack of all trades.
Okay.
Chances are though that your character is only a druid of the talon if he is a male night elf that's been hibernating the last millennia. The organizations was almost all disbanded by the time females and tauren were allowed to train and become druids. The basic idea of Druid of the Wild is an ingame explanation to why druids in-game can utilize all forms.
And of course SunThas has to make a female Night Elf Druid of the Talon. I will re-roll a Tauren Male Druid.

*sobs silenty*
Woah woah woah. Druids can turn in all the available forms, as far as I know, and the fact was seen in the comics. (of Gilneas, that is, as Belysra was remembering)
All the discussion in that Curse of the Worgen comics point out that druids can, or were able, to turn in any form. See the two important males that, on their own accord, choose to turn into their Pack Form, and not in a bear one, as they were allowed.
And especially in the 26th page of the second chapter, in which one of them turns into moonkin, instead of the wolf.
Druids can turn into any form they've developed a spiritual connection with. Druidism is a divine art, and belief is the only hurdle they need to jump.

If your Druid believes in balance and utilising the strongest aspects of a wide variety of creatures depending on the situation, why would they call themselves a Druid of the Talon?

Druids of the Talon form a close bond with avians, and like when you catch a ball with your right hand, their snap response is to take the form of a bird to solve a problem. A Druid of the Claw might try to navigate an obstacle with his strength as a bear, and he would probably always try to do that. You can apply this to any class. Why would a seasoned warrior, haven't spent all his life training with two-handed swords, suddenly decide to pick up a mace or an axe? Would he expect to be as adept in its use as he was with his trusty zwei-hander?

Nope!

Druids of the Wild are versatile, and that's why they've been useful in the recent conflicts. They can adapt, and cover their weaknesses.

If you want to be adaptable, you become a Druid of the Wild. If you want to know the skies as well as or better than their masters, you become a Druid of the Talon.
Druids of the <Totem> specialise on their totem, but that doesn't mean they can't morph into the other forms! Their forms are just less useful than even a Druid of the Wilds'.
Similarly, the forms Druids of the Wilds turn into aren't as useful and strong as the form of a Druid of the <Totem>

That's what I know, and how I've always RP'd. Furthermore, I've seen -a lot- of others do it the same way. So yeah, my opinion.
I'd consider it a back-up form. Whereas a soldier would be fond of his zwei-hander, he would have -some- training in a smaller sword or axe, simply so he wouldn't get over run in a suddenly too close fight or stuck in a room where he can't swing around that massive sword of his without decapitating his allies. Druid of the Talon would be masters of the sky, always using their bird for when they can. But when they -can't- I'd expect they could turn into something else like a cheetah. When your in a dark cave, turning into a bird is a bad idea after all.
I would have to agree with KageAcuma and Kira. But rules are rules but I think this should be debated, as it is a pain in my back. Yes, Druids of the Wild are versaitile and adaptive. But what if my Druid of the Talon can shapeshift into a Cheetah or a Cat, but really has no control over attacking someone or maybe the cat form trips alot because she is very unused of the form?
No, the Druid still retains all of their mind in their animal form, but their sentience and mindset shifts to a more feral one. (excluding Savagekin but that's a whole different story) You should stick with Druid of the Wild for the character you played which shifted in to three different forms in that RP (I'm Darian). If you want to play Druid of the Talon try and read up on some of the lore; it's a very specialised sect of Druidism and simply don't consider other forms for themselves.

Also, you were buddies with a Troll... that's kind of unlikely, to put it mildly. But that's a random OT thought.
This is why... This is why, we need Cataclysm... :(

Cataclysm or not it shouldn't be a bother. We are in the down time of getting into the specifics of Cata, so most of this shouldn't be unheard of. As for game mechanics, the best kind is imagination.
