Can you imagine that not being on purpose when they can, at the very least, look up information on Grom on the internet ?

I guess this is exactly what they had in mind for Grom and they simply decided to go for the full on makeover since they're reintroducing the character anyway.
Wait. Is nerzhul just a bad guy now? No more of his mistaken grasp for power? No more nuance?

F off blizzard. Stop treating nerzhul like shight outside the lore. He already gets the arse end of it inside.
Ner'zhul is busy corrupting the Naaru in Shadowmoon.

Gul'dan at this point in time, in the cinematic, is the only orc who accepted the contract of the demons, hence why he is green.

It was supposed to be that they turned green before they drank the blood, and that is why you have Frostwolves with green skin, despite the fact that the Frostwolf clan is the only clan (that I remember) that refused to drink blood. Orgrim Doomhammer is also someone that said "Naaaaah" to it. So it would be a small lore error, unless the orcs in this timeline don't start killing draenei until after Grom says "We won't be slaves, we will be conquerors".
The way it worked was... Most orcs turned green because of drinking the blood. Those that didn't (excluding the Mag'har of Garadar) were warped green by their normal skin literally flaking off because of proximity to so much warlock magics that the orcs were abusing and just throwing here and there because lel powerstomps. Such orcs were Orgrim Doomhammer, Durotan, Draka, etc. It's similar to how the Belves of Silvermoon got fel-green eyes even if they didn't directly absorb Fel, they were just around heavy use of it.

Man, Ner'zhul gets the shaft hard in characterization. Attempting not to spoil much, but essentially from the beta stuff I've seen so far they imply he was -forced- into joining the Iron Horde, with some of his clan and even some people close to him refusing and going into exile as a result. You'd think this would mean he's reluctant somewhere in there, right? Otherwise he'd have gone along gung-ho and wouldn't have needed to be pushed.

...But then when you encounter him everywhere he's mustache twirling 'ho ho let's kill all these spacegoats, let's make horrific sacrificial rites and summon terrible magic, let's just go ahead and corrupt our ancestral spirits nah S'ALL GOOD SEE YOU IN A DUNGEON.

Really seems like they passed up a chance to explore an important lore figure without making him a cut and dry baddie.

Pretty much. From a timeline standpoint, the orcs turned green after the draenei slaughter and after the demon blood, so this part of continuity is fine.

This treatment applies to pretty much all of the orc characters that aren't Frostwolf, looks like. This is part of why I'm confused when folks say that they're excited that it's an orc-centric expansion.

Well, yes, it's centered on orcs. It's centered on turning the race and all of their heroes and lore figures of the past into cartoon villains. Kinda like the two expansions before it. Uh, yay?
Except the noble Frostwolves! If it ain't Frostwolf, it ain't right.
Frostwolf pride, worldwide.
Kag, I'm absolutely certain that Garrosh's jaw tat isn't unique to him, but was supposed to be something he did in honor of his father, who I most definitely remember having a blacked-out jaw as well as being thinner.

Zen, Hermit, and Grak, thanks for shedding some light on that for me. I was pretty sure my confusion was due to the twits at Blizzard as I use WC1-3 and Christie Golden novels to source most of my orc lore. Now I'm just wondering if they'll clarify Grom's age or just how exactly the green-skin corruption works in WoD... probably not.
The black-jaw tattoo that Garrosh had done on him was done in his father's memory - Grommash Hellscream also had said tattoo, ever since before even the slaughter of the Draenei. You can read the former part of that statement in The Shattering, and the latter part of that statement in Rise of the Horde.

And it's funny that they have Gul'dan as green because if I recall correctly the first orc to -ever- become green by drinking or warlockery was Grom Hellscream... So yeah.
BUT MUH NERZHUL.

YOU MONSTERS.

TYRANTS.

ABUSING THE POWER YOU HOLD.

You've ruined the best Orc. I can never forgive you Blizzard.
I have zero attachment to orcs, let alone any orc character. The cinematic was neat to watch, but I was feeling a lot of apathy all around.

Also, am I the only one that likes ugly orcs?
Kil'shi sheds many tears.

Orvisha was hardly an orc. >:V But really, I meant in Blizzard-made lore.
MUH MINOR CLANS
