I'm a little bit confused...

Hi there! I'm new to the community here and I'm having a bit of trouble getting my login to work for the server. I've been approved for the server for a few months but never had the time to play, caught up with school and the like. Last time I tried to log onto the game server my credentials have worked fine but now they don't at all. I've got a few questions on possible changes to my login.

When entering my username and password to the server I am prompted with the Battle.net account merge window and cannot log in. My client is patched to the correct version for the server and my login credentials have worked before (I've made a character and logged into the world). I have recently used the same installation of WoW to play on the retail servers, could this be the source of the problem? I've deleted the cache and changed the realmlist.wtf file to the one found on the wiki.

If anyone is able to explain the problems with login info or link my to a forum post that explains how I would retrieve proper login info, please leave a post here! I've scoured the forums and wiki to find no answers and I'd really just like to start roleplaying again!

First thing's first - are you running it from a shortcut? And if so, ensure the shortcut is pointing to Wow.exe, not Launcher.exe. If it still doesn't work, try running it directly (as in, go into your WoW directory and run Wow.exe there).

It's not a problem with the WoW executable but connecting to the server. My client runs fine and has been tested using a retail server. Whenever I try to log onto CotH servers (after purging the cache and changing to the correct realmlist) it prompts me to merge my account with a battle.net account. I'm not sure what to do after this prompt because I can't exactly merge an account that doesn't exist on a Blizzard server. Has this not happened to anyone else before? Do I need a fresh WoW install to play on the CotH server?

That did not answer the questions I had. Please verify the above. If your realmlist is correct, and there's only one realmlist, and you're running the game from Wow.exe, you should not have that problem.
Also, please ensure you do actually check and not just assume. This type of problem and most other connection-related problems are usually client-side; as in, user error. PEBKAC. After all, Blizzard doesn't intend for things to be super easy to connect to different servers... hehe.

Also, not to butt in, but there might be an error in your username and password. I had this issue once. All I had to do was check if my caps-lock was on or recheck the spelling -- it can be easy to misspell. I have done that a lot lately.

If that doesn't help, make sure you delete your interface, WTF, and Cache folders. Then go into Data > enUS > and see if you have two Realm Lists (realmlist and realmlistLIVE). If you do, make sure they both have logon.conquestofthehorde.com set as realm list and patch list.

Hope this helps.
