She slid a dagger across the tip of a finger but didn't so much as wince as the blade sliced her flesh. Blood immediately began to seep through the wound as the blade slid across it and she frowned in disappointment.
...so many years I have poured over these texts. So many years I have dedicated to my work, and still I suffer from the imperfections of my kind.
She clenched her bleeding fist and held the edge of the dagger to the candle light making the blood stain shine brightly.
...but perhaps the pain is necessary. Just as those whom I save must pass through one last instance of pain, so too must I suffer.
She lied the dagger and the few droplets trickled off the edge onto the table.
...or perhaps I am doing something incorrectly.
She propped her head on her hands and furrowed her brow. The candle light wavered slightly against her gentle breathing, and the signs of aging etched into her Gnomish features were made more profound against the flame.
