Timeline and Age Changes
#46
Is the year 29 thing definite yet? I was hoping to start writing up a profile with the new timeline in mind.

I liked your other one-liners to describe what was going on for the other significant events. But for us newbs, can you do a little something for each item on the list? Obviously a character can't be involved in everything, but a rough idea without hunting across the internet for every profile would be nice.

I have a hard enough time trying to figure out what happened the last five years let alone the log of history based on books I've never read.

Spoiler:
No offense, I love history. It's just hard to remember what is significant. And bit overwhelming at times.

I'll be making the timeline more descriptive before we put it on the wiki. For now: Reign of Chaos is Third War (Warcraft 3) and Frozen Throne is the rise of the Blood Elves, Forsaken, and Arthas becoming the Lich King (Warcraft 3 expansion.)

As for the Sunwell Trilogy...I haven't read them either. The best plot synopsis I got there was "Kalecgos goes around Scourge killin' around Silvermoon."

Edit: According to the WoW-Europe site, Blood Elf ages are roughly the same as Night Elves. I recently discovered that the ages in the WoW d20 are directly lifted from D&D 3.5, so they're incorrect (yet another reason not to trust the d20 completely.) If Belf ages change, they'll be moved to be identical to the Nelf ones, with an age cap of around 2000.

I know two people who will be ecstatic to hear that.

Alternatively, we now know three.

Though that may just be me.

Very interesting. I'll be looking forward to editing my belf ages.

If the Blood Elf age guidelines change, will their "reaching adulthood" age change as well or will it stay at 110?

I feel 300, like that of the Night Elves, is a bit... high.

I still sort of support the idea that High/Blood elves gradually lost their longevity compared to Night Elves because of their separation from the World Tree and such. I also recall reading on the wiki that only a few high elves lived to the 2000 mark.

Don't get me wrong, I support super-old blood elves (now Aryeon can be even older, yay!), but making them identical to Night Elves seems eh.

Then again, Night Elves were immortal until only recently.

So the age guidelines for Night Elves are theoretical for the most part since the old elves of 10,000+ didn't just "HNNNNGH" and die when their immortality was sacrificed, even though 1,200 is the supposed "maximum age".

Either way, I like the potential differences in the two elf races ages. Making them carbon copies of each other with the sole exception that some NEs are ancient as hell due to the world tree seems underwhelming.

We try to keep as close to canon as we can on things like this, so it's more what Blizzard sets in front of us than our own subjective points of view on the matter...particularly since subjective points of view are just that, and opinions can and will differ on what's appropriate.

For what it's worth, I agree that I prefer Belves with shorter lifespans and think them living as long as Nelves is pretty silly and stupid. I liked the old age ranges better. However, we try to be fair, and as a canon lore source was cited to me that suggests the age spans between the two types of elves are very similar, we have to go by that. I can't take changes that I personally like (the changes to the orc age ranges) and not take the ones I don't (the changes to the belf age ranges) when both have similar reasons for change. It'd be hypocritical and against the aims of the server, which tries to be as close to Blizzard lore as possible.

It never hurts to take things with grains of salt, or to compromise when given conflicting sources of lore. The D20 may not be good basis for classes or gameplay, but as far as flavor lore goes, I don't see why it can't be viable, even if Blizzard just goes "lolwhatevs" about it. Until something in WoW itself directly contradicts it, I see no problems in incorporating other ideas. Again, I'm of the idea that most ancient high/blood elves are descendents of highborne elves, or are just old, period. More recently born elves probably lack this exceptional mortality.
