Economic RP?
#1
Okay so when I joined the server there were all these talks of Economy and IC gold and I was always like. PSSH no need, and who cares. But now that I've had the satisfaction of spending IC gold. I like it. In the storyline I'd like the Novalights to establish a front business. Although I may have failed, I am envisioning the Novalights somewhat as a Mafia family. The hits on their own members, the Nova, being akin to a Don, Racketeering, extortion and the like. They also have business fronts, to use as ways to legitimize dirty money. So I was curious can we open businesses and how do we do it. How can I get it recognized by the staff? That's what's important. I don't want to do something for it to get shut down later. Which was one of the reasons I'm upset the Beauford Bay won't re-open It would've been nice to open a business there. However I've seen other players hold businesses ICly.

Jean and Rensin's Tavern in Old Town,

Selena's shop in Royal exchange

There was a classy bar in the park in Stormwind

Drarry's Casino

And another somewhere else.

Where I figured basically we'd just find an empty tavern, or one that isn't being used by ppl and say we own it? For that time being, and it not being the wayferer or w/e its called but just an anonymous bar owned ( temporarily OOCly ) by said party. Are we still allowed to do that. Can a brotha get IC revenue? I'd like to start businesses, and maybe even some financial wars with the other noble houses or buy out some mom and pop shops. I've seen ideas on a economical warfare side but never had a character who was applicable to the situation as I used to loathe nobles with a passion. Because the IC currency system is win I just think needs a larger stimulus. More people need to have IC money and be aware of it and its function for it to work. We as RPers need to think of ways to use it. Shout out to Wuvvums for the Slave trade, Cressy and Kretol for the Auctions and others who ohave lead events for IC reasons.

And Also? If one does get to own bar/tavern. Can Bar fights happen since we own the business/guards. Of course you don't want a fullscale roll fight. But can a dude get punched before getting /autokilled? Not getting /autokilled? Except for whatever overbearing thing the Arcane Guardian says all the time. Yes? No? Tweaks? Do I have to apply for a business to be server recognized?

I, for one, support this gesture. It would be good if we had some sense of wealth in RP. However, I don't think it should be a ruling factor, per se, as you see on Prologue for example. I remember seeing a guide on money somewhere. I'll link it when I find it.

I'd have some advice for taverns and bars to encourage people to do the quest to get 5 IC silver, and then exchange it for copper. Then you could price most of your drinks and meals around coppers.

Then maybe prices could scale up a bit for more important things. For example, someone asked if they could have a bike made for them. They said their character would have the money for the bike and would know and engineer as the justification for having said bike. While it could work these things aren't cheap, so I would put an IC coin price on the service that must be met before it.

I think the problem is that people sort of take the money for granted. Some refuse to use the system because they think they'd be more rich than that. They don't know that a noble only gets 30 gold for their estate when approved, and that that's a generous amount. Maybe if we stuck to our guns and refused to use pretend currency, then the system would catch on.

I also don't like the idea of people affirming they'd have this level of money just because as a note.

Though the GMs support the IC currency and its use, that doesn't mean much if the players don't support it.

Never really used IC currency myself, though I had a few coin purses in the GHI bag slot just in case. The idea just never caught on to me.

I might as well emote "/me hands a coin purse over." and keep it at that instead of typing the same, opening a trade screen, wait for it to be accepted before moving on.

It's just all the same for me personally. Don't feel like it adds much immersion to open the trade screen and use a money currency that can be made when it's required. (Think that's one of the flaws of the concept. GHI money can be made by everyone and used everywhere. Only way to change that is by having a sole person to make all the coins so you can see "Made by coinmaker/coinhouse/whatever" so you know it's 'legit'. No longer relevant to the post.)

However, should the opportunity arise. I'd visit the tavern/shop/whatever gets set up and see how it goes. May just make one toon to solely use IC coins, while keeping the rest without the currency to just see what I prefer in the end. It's not a thing that can be really enforced, though you can make some things restricted to using the IC money. (Like the tavern/shop idea) Iunno, I'm indifferent and haven't RPed in a while so don't hold great value to this post. ^^

Except these items aren't made with GHI. They are actual items in your inventory that Kretol implemented.

Prologue pretty much ruined any enjoyment of any IC currency for me. Yes, I know this server isn't Prologue. I just don't have the faith in people to use it right, so I do not participate. I don't even have faith in me, see? You might wonder why I offer my opinion at all if I don't participate. I don't want to call out others who do. If you enjoy it, wonderful. I honestly give you props for having more patience than me. Non-participation or not, I still wish to help the server.

It's worth noting that the wealth gap between nobles and everyone else is larger than people think at first. That top, say, 3-5% holds basically every cent there is. That's true IRL, it's true in the past, it's true in any society basically ever. When I look at the system, I see that anyone can pick up five gold. The Coin Quest Orc was a good idea, we needed something to represent an independent influx of cash, like a person's job. The issue is, everyone (unless there's a level limit, like with the goblin) can do it. Everyone can have the wealth of a noble if they farm often enough, even with the cooldown on the quest. The IC cash slowly turns into OOC cash if people hoard this stuff. I'm not saying it's guaranteed everyone will, I know there are good souls out there that will try to play this right, and I'm not calling the potential hoarders bad. It's just...human nature.

Granted, I have no idea how many people actively participate in the IC Coin system. This is all hypothetical, meant for if everyone did. This system is a valid, good effort. A step in the right direction, and will be remembered. But, as great as they are, the firsts are always...off.

A side note: I think this post may have been better in Private Discussion, if you're just asking the GMs.

Well thats the thing about it. Just like Roll and trust fighting. In a roll fight there are standards, and limits depending on your roll. The system represents chance but doesn't incorporate the story. Meaning my orc warrior who trained all his life can lose to a drunk trolling human because of the system. It doesn't add the fact that in my story I've been training for twenty years.

Just like when you have families as old as The House of Blackstone, or The Novalights, or the Seregon, or The house of Silverflame ( Few restarts ago ) you would have gold. More than 30, just by snowballing wealth and gaining profits. I don't think there should be too much of a limit on gold because it isn't something that is epic or prestige-y. Its a great story mechanic which is what I realized. RP gold enables you to be able to do more to open options. For fun and story. Even lack of money makes a great story mechanic and a desire to work with those who have it ICly.
When you 'trust' wealth then you get to reflect your story more. Which is why I was against the concept originally. However if we weren't given such small amounts then we could work with it. And there would be... way more IC gold moving around.

I also said that my character would have enough gold to purchase a motorcycle and would know an engineer to produce it because I still believe its true. ICly Annabelle can probably make one if she had the materials and blueprints. She probably has made one already. I still believe that most any noble family could afford one without too much problem.

I've had many meetings with characters and bonds, helping others financially, and supporting their groups. Neither party exchanged gold, yet we RPed a transaction was going on, a constant one of significant value.

I think for the IC currency to work we need more of it. Or select times to use it. And times to use trust currency. Like a time for roll fights and trust fights. Its how I feel about it. But I'm now open to the idea of it, more than I was because of buying slaves. It was fun.

Ah, didn't knew they implanted that / are thinking of it. I've seen the idea before, but it got rejected due to the easy abuse system. Roll a new toon, get free cash and trade it over to your main.

Unless it's handed out when the person turns into a certain level. No idea, I missed the updates on this admittedly.

I think you get 50 or 5 silver for level 50 and 5 gold for level 80. Pretty hard to abuse.

Thanks for that. ^^ Good to be updated on this again. That makes it indeed harder to abuse so consider my previous comments scrapped.

At any rate, I'd be up for trying it but no guarantees that I'll stick with the IC coin system.

Like in real economy: It's up to the people that want your stuff to find something you'll want to buy from them.

Slaves are a good example, since you're buying the slaves RP.

I'd pay some fat stacks of silver to be in some profesionally planned and customised truly interactive events/storylines.

Get creative, entrepreneurs.
