History of the Elves

Quote:Every part of him burned with dark purpose. He felt the demonic energy coursing through his veins, a searing song of magical power – power transfered to him when he put his hand upon the fel stalker while it’s life ebbed away. Never had Var’thal known such intensity, such raw force.

“Bless the Betrayer and his gift,” Var’thal whispered...

The Complete Elven Calendar

Below is a representation of the history given to us based on the High/Blood Elven calendar. As it is not historical fact but rather opinion, in ‘Spoiler’ frames, I will post an interpretation of events based on the general Blood Elven view. Note that not all Blood Elves will feel this way, but I’ll do my damnedest to get it as accurate to the societal norm as possible. To calculate the date of an elven event into the traditional Human Calendar (Used on the Official Server Timeline) simply subtract 6,930 from the year of the event.

    Exile of the Highborne Begins:

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
With the integration of Druidism into Night Elven society, arcane magic and all of it’s subsets were banned within greater elven society, only those Highborne daring enough to continue it’s practice going through with it. Even then, their studies were conducted far from prying eyes. One of these illegal practitioners was Dath’Remar Sunstrider, acting as the head of the Highborne that had not been killed. In an attempt to defy Malfurion and his new laws against the arcane, Dath’Remar and his followers unleashed a violent magical storm upon Ashenvale.

Unable to slaughter so many of their kin the Night Elves crafted special ships specifically for travel across The Great Sea. By this point the Highborne (soon to be High Elves) were glad to be rid of their cousins, free to practice their magic as they so pleased. With this they also tossed aside worship of the moon, embracing the sun instead as their skin shifted from the darker purple to the lighter pink. Thus was the beginning of the High Elves.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
Most Sin’dorei would take the Exile of the Highborne as both a moment of great joy, and great hatred, each for their own reasons. Looking back on the event as a Blood Elf they would only hate their cousins the Night Elves even more for banning the use of their ancestor’s ‘harmless’ arcane magic. They would think about what their history might have been like if they had continued living on Kalimdor, never to be attacked by the Orcs, or taste the betrayal of the humans.

On the other hand, it was also a freeing event which has shaped Elven history just as much as the War of the Ancients itself. They were no longer kept under a watchful eye, able to take up whatever magical endeavors they so wished. Their exile gave way to enough consistent use of arcane to mutate them into what they are today, creating the distinction between High and Blood Elves from Night Elves.

Your character can take, one, the other, neither, or both of these stances on the matter.

    Foundation of Quel’Thalas

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Leading the High Elves past the violent Maelstrom and onto the lost continent of the Eastern Kingdoms, the elves landed upon the shores of Lordaeron. They took Tirisfal Glades as their bastion for a time, but as legend goes, something evil beneath their new home had begun to drive them mad. Near the same time, their connection with the new well of eternity had become completely severed which caused them vulnerability to the elements. After some time their skin changed hues, their stature lessened, and they completely tossed aside old customs in leu of their new ways.

As the elves searched for a new home they came in contact with both humans and trolls. The former were of little interest to them, but the millennia long rivalry between Elves and Trolls lasted past the sundering, into the new era of the High Elves. They soon grew a renewed hatred for their green neighbors who viewed them as trespassers upon Forest Troll land.

Furthering this hatred, the Elves found a ‘perfect’ site for their new home, later to be called Quel’thalas. Unfortunately they built their new capital upon the remains of a sacred troll city, causing the trolls to attack with their full force. Although greatly outnumbered (estimated at a ten to one ration), the elves were able to use their magic to fight back the trolls and seize the day. In order to keep using their magic the Elves built barriers around their new home, shielding the skies from their magic so it wouldn’t emanate into the Nether.

Tired of using magic based purely upon the strength of their bodies, the High Elves created their own version of the Well of Eternity. Although it was weaker, it’s influence touched them no matter where they were on Azeroth. With it’s power they cast a permanent enchantment upon Quel’thalas to form an eternal spring, as had been done with the land of Azshara. The Sunwell eventually became holy to them, creating a stronger bond than the Well of Eternity ever had.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
For those that are versed in history this would simply give them additional pride and fervor for the Sin’dorei people, showing that despite being assaulted by what today is assumed to have been an Old God, prevented from settling by the Trolls, and then flourishing in their new society by creating a new Sunwell, the Elves managed to prevail over any challenge sent their way.

    Arathor and the Troll Wars

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Brooding within their portion of the Northern Kingdoms, the Forest Trolls plotted to once again attack the High Elves. Creeping from their bastion of power, the Trolls attacked Quel’thalas once more, the elves taking loss after loss. They were forced to call to the humans of Arathor for aid as their numbles dwindled. In exchange for the training of 100 human mages, the Humans agreed to help. Crushing the massive Amani Empire that had been growing for over twenty thousand years, the Elves and Humans cultivated an alliance that has lasted ever since.

A main battle within this conflict was the final fight of the entire war, where human and elven magi fought alongside one another. At the Battle of the Alterac Mountain, human and elven warriors clashed with the Amani tribe. Eventually they called the mages to the front, raining massive amounts of fire down upon them to hinder their regeneration, breaking not only Troll flesh, but piercing into their morale as well. As the forest trolls fled the battle, they were mercilessly butchered, and the war came to an end.

These events led to the eventual founding of Dalaran, where mages of all races could come together and study their abilities within the confines of a productive environment.

The elves owed the humans a debt of gratitude after the war, repayable only to the kin of Thoradin, leader of the Arathor. This would pave the way for elven intervention in the Second War, as well as solidifying their spot in the Alliance.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
Having lead to not only a victory, but the founding of Dalaran, a place where an innumerable amount of elven Magi have been trained, the Troll War is considered one of the shining moments in Elven History. It’s slightly dulled by the fact they needed to call to the humans for aid, and even more so that they were put into a debt of gratitude, but the victory overshadows this for the most part. The Troll Wars were a defining moment in Elven history that lead to a strong bond between themselves and the humans for many thousands of years.

    The Guardians of Tirisfal

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
With the northlands devoid of trolls, the elves of Quel’thalas could focus their attention on rebuilding their homes after the destruction of the long lasting Troll Wars. They did however focus much attention on the great Magi city of Dalaran. They did little to prevent the Legion from finding them. Demons were drawn back into Azeroth. Mostly lesser demons, they were unable to form a full attack, but did cause chaos and panic within the streets of Dalaran. The Magocrats did what they could to prevent and cover up these events, but often found themselves outmatched by the demonic entities.

After some time peasants in the area began to suspect the magi were hiding something from them, and rumors of revolution spread through the streets of Dalaran. Fearing the incoming revolt, and the inevitable intervention of Strom that would surely follow, the humans of Dalaran turned to the elves for aid. Upon hearing of the demons within the streets of Dalaran, the elves quickly sent the strongest of their warriors and magi. Their conclusion after months of study, was that the Legion was once again a very real threat with the added stress of the humans on Azeroth’s ‘shields’ that prevented the Legion from being drawn back.

The magi decided to wage an underground war against these demons, empowering one single man or woman with enough power to stop anything that would come into his/her path. The elves agreed to the proposal, and the Guardians of Tirisfal were formed. The Council of Silvermoon formed a pact with the humans that they wouldn’t let the populaces of their nations know of the secret war being waged, for fear of mass paranoia and hysteria. The society held it’s meetings in the Tirisfal Glades where the Guardians got their name. Though only one man or woman, with a group of allies, the one Guardian (there can only be one at any given time) had enough power to fight back any demonic threat. The Guardians lived for many years, and the mantle was passed down as the next generation of magi was tasked with taking the duty upon themselves. That is, until...

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
Not many knew about the Guardians of Tirisfal, not even the bulk of the Elven community. Those that did may find it a bit unreasonable to have so many humans take up the mantle, but they would agree nonetheless that someone needed to protect Azeroth from demons. If a capable human mage was able, then it was better than no one at all.

    The Last Guardian

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Aegwynn, one of the Guardians, gave birth to a son who she proclaimed was destined to be the next Guardian. She believed nothing was wrong with him, but the demonic seed of Sargeras had pushed itself into the child. As he grew, Medivh was controlled from within by the demonic lord.

The Dark Portal and the Fall of Stormwind

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
On the distant planet of Draenor, the orcs prepared for war. The elves had little to do with the first major conflict in the southern kingdoms. In fact, they knew absolutely nothing about it aside from rumors. Despite this, any High Elves living in Stormwind would have been present. The orcs ransacked Stormwind, shaking it to it’s foundations. The refugees fled north, where the Alliance, as well as the Second War, found it’s roots.

  • 6910 – 6912:

The Alliance of Lordaeron / The Second War

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
With the news that the Horde was coming north, the elves were finally forced to repay their ancient debt. They were drawn into the conflict with the Orcish Horde, but didn’t view the orcs as a true threat. They sent minimal troops, but would be shocked to find the green villains storming their own forest of Quel’thalas, along with the vile Amani Tribe. Ogres, orcs, trolls, and dragons shook the forest to it’s foundations, leaving the Elves with a vendetta against them. Their forest left in a smoldering ruin, the Council of Quel’thalas ordered the elves wage an outright war with the Orcs, demanding the aid of any able bodied warrior.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
This would be the Elves’ first contact with the Orcs, which would later lead to a grudge that many were not (and still -are- not) able to lift. The destruction of their forests would have been considered unforgivable by many Elves. They would however, be able to relate to the fact that they were under the influence of a mass amount of Fel. As Blood Elves they would be able to understand all too well, even relating to the Orcs on the matter. Their own king fell to the same corruption as they did...

  • 6912:

    Invasion of Draenor

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
As the orcs were driven back, the Elves, Dwarves, and Humans led an expedition into Draenor. Alleria Windrunner led a High Elf force into Draenor where they fought against the Horde on their own ground. This was a violent event, largely based upon the thirst for revenge the elves had for the destruction of their forest. The Expedition decided to stay on Draenor however, and destroy the dark portal from the foreign world in order to protect Azeroth. Any elf left behind on this mission would not be able to escape until the recent re-opening of the Dark Portal.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
Most elves would view those that sacrificed themselves on Draenor as martyrs, and welcomed them back with open arms with the reopening of the Dark Portal. That is, if they would be willing to join them in becoming Blood Elves. Many would stay High Elves, in which case they would be no be the enemy they seek to destroy.

    The Third War

    The Fall of Quel’Thalas

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Although the Elven ranger corps fought bravely against the relentless onslaught of Arthas' Scourge, the elves were unable to keep the Death Knight from seizing the Key of the Three Moons and pushing into the Inner Kingdom. Arthas wasted no time in fortifying his position to the southwest of the city. Sylvanas then set up her own base across the river from Arthas' right flank and began leading strikes against the Undead.

As the battle began outside the Undead base, word reached Arthas that Sylvanas was sending runners (by foot for some reason) to alert Silvermoon of the attack and summon reinforcements. Arthas however, had anticipated this and positioned Gargoyles along the roadways. The flying beasts quickly and easily slew every runner sent, keeping Silvermoon in the dark and ensuring that Sylvanas would receive no reinforcements.

After beating back several assaults by Sylvanas, Arthas advanced his forces to the bridge between his and Sylvanas' camps where fierce fighting ensued. After a brief yet bloody stalemate, the Scourge gained the upper hand. As the attacks began to wind down, Arthas and his forces charged into Sylvanas' camp, slaughtering all in their way. Sylvanas' warriors fought bravely to the last man, but were inevitably overwhelmed. As her base crumbled around her, Sylvanas was personally approached by Arthas. Before she could load her bow, the Death Knight cut her down. In sadistic retribution for resisting him so fiercely, Arthas transformed Sylvanas into a banshee, binding her to the Lich King's will.

With the Ranger Corps destroyed, nothing stood between the Scourge and Silvermoon. Arthas and his forces regrouped, reinforced and marched on the city's gates. As the Undead approached, Dragonhawk Riders plummeted down upon the Scourge and rained missiles upon them, inflicting heavy casualties. Yet even these elite warriors fell victim to Arthas' Crypt Fiends who ensnared them in webbing and forced them to the ground where they were easily destroyed by Scourge warriors. Entering the city itself, the Undead encountered fanatic last-ditch resistance from the elves. Yet despite their fury, they could not hold back the dead, who rolled over them like a wave of carnage.

Even the powerful arcane constructs built to protect the Sunwell could not hold out for long against the horrid wave of Undead. As the final defenders were wiped out, Arthas placed Kel'thuzad's remains in the Sunwell, resurrecting him as a lich and fouling the well. Quel'Thalas had ceased to exist as a nation.

    Briefly...

A few lucky elves managed to evade their undead pursuers and escape into the wilds. These hardy survivors would eventually band together under Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider and become the Blood Elves.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
The Fall of Quel’thalas... The most devastating blow to Quel’dorei society since the War of the Ancients. No elf would look upon this moment with any semblance of joy or happiness, only an overwhelming sorrow. This event not only tore families apart, but created a rift in Quel’dorei society that formed two factions for an already devastated race. It was this that caused the birth of The Blood Elves, their hatred for the Scourge, and their inevitable melding with The Horde.

    Rise of the Blood Elves

    Misconceptions

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Kael began the repairs of the first Arcane Observatory (a device the human commander Garithos thought would be an ample tool used to spy on the Scourge), fighting his way through Dalaran where he had to defeat mutants, bandits, dark and renegade wizards, and the spawn of the Burning Legion. Kael remembered that he had buried four treasures in that area, so he defeated some dark wizards and bandits and claimed his treasure. When he reached the goblin shipyard for ships, however, he found that some ghouls had destroyed the shipyard but was aided in crossing Lordamere Lake outside Dalaran by Lady Vashj and her Naga, who, sensing kindred spirits, had been watching the Blood Elves' affairs.

Finally Kael reached the island and secured a gold mine, proceeding to vanquish a small Undead vanguard to the west of the island and a group of forest trolls to the north, claiming a goblin shipyard and a goblin merchant. He repaired the Observatory of the island and sailed away to his next destination. He searched the rest of the hidden treasures, one was warded by ogres, and completed the repairs of the third Observatory that was warded by gnolls. In a lull in the fighting to the west, Garithos reappeared and warned Kael against consorting with the Naga, whom he considered "inhuman".

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
The ‘Misconception’ was the first of many moments during the Third War that would lead to the eventual desertion of the Blood Elves. Where they should have been on the front lines, fighting the Scourge that had destroyed their homeland, they were forced to stay back and tend to the menial job of repairing the Arcane Observatories. Any elf would still be outraged at Garithos’ dismissal of the Naga, despite the amount of help they had obviously given the Sin’dorei.

    A Dark Covenant

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
After the previous battle, Garithos returned to the front, while Kael awaited for orders. The next day Garithos sent an Emissary that ordered all of Kael's cavalry, artillery and support troops to pull back to the west at the Front Line, leaving Kael and his Blood Elves virtually defenseless. The large Undead force, commanded by the dreadlord Dalvengyr, quickly overran the Blood Elves' outlying bases; Kael and his warriors were surrounded and they didn't know what to do, but then Vashj and the Naga appeared, in desperation, Kael again entered in a pact with Vashj. With the aid of the Naga, the Blood Elves defended their last base and turned the tide against the Undead. First they recovered one of their outlying bases with a gold mine. They continued fighting the Undead and retook the other outlying bases one by one. Finally, the Blood Elves and Naga stormed Dalvengyr's base, slew the dreadlord, and obliterated his remaining forces.

Kael thanked Vashj for her aid, but feared that he had incurred the wrath of Garithos. Vashj encouraged Kael to abandon his prejudiced human commander and lead his people to a destiny of power and glory. Kael then told Vashj that ever since Quel'Thalas had been destroyed, he and his people had been suffering from a strange, unexplainable hunger. Vashj explained that this hunger was brought about by their addiction to magic. Now that the Sunwell had been destroyed, Kael and his people had been cut off from their ancient source of power. Kael was horrified. Without a new source of magic, his people were doomed to an existence of mortality. Vashj suggested that Kael seek out demon magic. Kael balked at this idea but before they could go any further, Kael learned that Garithos was returning from the front. Kael told Vashj to leave before Garithos saw them.

With the bulk of the Alliance troops on his side, Garithos had been able to force the enemy into retreat; however, returning to Dalaran he and his knights spotted several Naga warriors slithering to safety, and, infuriated, he accused Kael and his men of being traitors. Kael tried to explain his actions, but Garithos ignored him and had Kael and all of his Blood Elves arrested and jailed in Dalaran's dungeons to await execution.
Lady Vashj and her Naga minions watched all this in hiding.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
Needless to say, this was a terrible way for a fledgling society to get off the ground in a war torn land. The vile Garithos not only left them for dead, but when they took the aid that he could not give them, they were sent into one of the highest security prisons outside of Kul’tiras on the entire Eastern Kingdoms. They weren’t granted the revenge they wanted by the humans, and now, they were stuck... Waiting for their inevitable execution at the hand of a racist human leader.

    The Dungeons of Dalaran

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Lady Vashj broke Kael out of his magical prison, were he was held and awaiting execution. Together they released Kael's lieutenants, as well as some of his forces, which not only had to face the Dungeon's jailors, but also creatures once kept by the Kirin Tor for experimentation and the ghosts of the Archmages killed by Arthas during the Siege of Dalaran.

Kael and Lady Vashj were forced to kill Kassan, the Dungeons' warden and an old friend of Kael, in order to reach a dimensional portal, the one opened by Kel'thuzad to release the Burning Legion, and scape to Outland but to do that they needed to buy time holding Garithos at bay while the Blood Elves escaped through the portal.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
Just as Kael was forced to kill Kassan to free himself, many of the Blood Elves may have had to kill old friends; Be they guardians of the dungeon, or the remnants of Garithos’ troops that had been left to guard them. Not every human was racist, but they would have also feared execution for betrayal. Elven and human friends would have been forced to cut one another down in the vile pit the Sin’dorei had been imprisoned in.

    The Search For Illidan

    Historical Event
    Spoiler:
Acquiescing to the requests of the Naga, the Blood Elves went forth through the portal and attempted to find the Demon Hunter Illidan. He had been captured by the Warden Maiev in the shattered world of Outland, where he was being brought back to her main base. Here the elves had a showdown with the Night Elf’s jailor, managing to bring the blind Hunter back into their midst to fight another day.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
This event would have simply lead to a greater distaste for the Night Elves, being enemies not only of their ancestors, but of their newfound allies.

    Gates of the Abyss

    Historical
    Spoiler:
Long ago, after Draenor’s explosion, a brutal Pit Lord by the name of Magtheridon rallied the surviving orcs and took control of Outland. Since that time, his forces had grown even stronger by using the very portals that had torn the planet apart. Gaining more and more reinforcements from the Twisting Nether, he has been able to vastly boost the amount of troops in his demonic army. This was where the forces of the Naga and Blood Elves came in however. They reached each of the portals that Magtheridon used to bolster his forces, fighting off what demons came through. They gave Illidan enough time to close each of the portals, stopping the flow of demons toward the Black Citadel, home of the Pit Lord King of Outland.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
The Gates of the Abyss would act as a solidifying act between Illidian, the Naga, and the Blood Elves, each completely loyal to one another. At least for the time being.

    Lord of Outland

    Historical
    Spoiler:
After successfully closing Magtheridon's Shadow Portals and thereby cutting off the mighty Pit Lord's supply of reinforcements, Illidan, Kael'thas Sunstrider and Lady Vashj marched upon the Black Temple. Magtheridon was outraged by this development, but typically for his arrogant kind he was not unduly worried- his citadel was extremely well protected by war machines and armies of Fel Orcs and Demons, led by the powerful Mistress of Torment and Master of Pain. As the Illidan's forces made their approach he swore to crush the Demon Hunter and his retainers.

Illidan split his forces, joining Kael in a frontal assault of the Temple whilst Vashj and her Naga insinuated themselves into the vast citadel's sewer and aqueduct system. Kael and Illidan immediately ran into problems in the form of Magtheridon's infernal war machines, which slaughtered many blood elves as they assaulted the Temple gates.

Fortunately, Akama and his draenei arrived, pledging their services to Illidan. They were able to infiltrate the Temple and destroy the network crystals which powered the war machines, allowing Kael and Illidan's forces to overrun the gates. They claimed an armoury containing several Fel Orc Demolishers, which they used to blast apart the Fel Orc encampments. Using the shadowy might of the Draenei again and again to sabotage Magtheridon's war machines, Illidan and Kael swept aside the Fel Orcs and Demons to battle and then kill the Master of Pain.

Meanwhile, Vashj and her small group of Naga routed several flotillas sent to engage them and destroyed two subterranean bases, the Fel Orcs proving no match for the awesome might of Vashj's Royal Guard. With her remaining troops Vashj then fought the Mistress of Torment and her retinue, the Sea Witch eventually overcoming the vicious Succubus.

With both of his lieutenants dead, the door to Magtheridon's chambers opened. Illidan, Kael, Akama and Vashj joined forces along with several captive Fel Orcs and Demons and assaulted the Pit Lord directly. After a terrible battle which killed many of the Illidan's forces, Magtheridon was finally defeated.

Magtheridon was shocked by his defeat at the hands of these strangers. The beaten pit lord asked Illidan if he was an agent of the Burning Legion sent to test him. Illidan laughed and replied that he had come to replace Magtheridon.

Illidan claimed himself Lord of Outland, and the remaining fel orcs and demons bowed down to their new master. However, the Betrayer's triumph was short-lived; barely an hour after the battle, the skies above the Black Temple clouded and the spectral form of Kil'jaeden appeared, demanding Illidan complete his task of destroying the Lich King. Cowed, Illidan once again gathered the Blood Elves and the Naga to him and marched upon Northrend.

As with Maiev Shadowsong, Magtheridon was originally thought dead, but instead Illidan held him captive underneath the Hellfire Citadel, using his blood to create more fel orcs.

    Spoiler:
For those that took part in the Battle of The Black Temple, it would have been a bittersweet occasion, for they would be one step closer not only to their ultimate goal, but also one step closer to extinction. It would have been devastating on their forces, the major battle that it was. However, with the additional forces Illidan could have mustered, they would shortly be on their way to the revenge that they so craved back on Azeroth.

    The Return to Northrend

    Historical
    Spoiler:
Arthas’ return to Northrend from Lordaeron could not have come at a worse time, for the Blood Elven forces were beginning to amass on the icy continent. He encountered Elven scouts on his way through the snow and blizzards, but before any true force could be amassed to cut him off Arthas’ pawn Anub’arak showed him a way through the ancient passages of Azjol-Nerub, getting him to Ice Crown faster.

    Sin’Dorei View
    Spoiler:
Not many elves would have actually seen Arthas’ return, but the news of it’s occurrence from their scouts would have invigorated them, knowing all too well that he was virtually alone as he travelled across the plains of Northrend, while they themselves lay waiting with an entire army.

A Symphony of Frost and Flame

    Historical
    Spoiler:
As the Lich King and his servant finally exit the Old Kingdom, they are met by the combined forces of the Naga, Blood Elves, and Illidan. The Scourge and the forces of Kil’jaeden each raced to activate the four obelisks required to open the gates to Icecrown Citadel, where Illidan wanted to destroy the Frozen Throne, and Arthas wanted to ascend to the position of the true Lich King and don the Helm of Dominion.

The Scourge however, manage to annihilate a major portion of the invading force, while at the same time taking each of the four towers. The gates to Icecrown open, but Illidan intercepted the lone Arthas on his way to the Citadel. A battle of epic proportions ensued at the mouth to the Citadel, but Illidan was struck down by the Prince of Darkness. As he lay there bleeding out reinforcements came to his aid, and pulled him back to safety.

    Sin’dorei View
    Spoiler:
This would have been a great defeat for the Elves, and quite the moral blow as they pulled back to Outland, others moving back to their former kingdom in the hopes of rebuilding it. Those that returned to the shattered remnants of Draenor would have sided with Kael, if not defecting to the Scryers. Those on Azeroth would be those betrayed by their former Prince, and for the most part, the Elves we generally play.

I'm positive I made a few miscalculations on the dates on the timeline, and there are probably some pretty heinous spelling errors in the too. I'll likely get around to Blood Elf-oriented events during the Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King at some point before the week's end. There's much more to come, but for some reason the forums don't want to let me reserve posts...

I'm liking the timeline, especially because you included a description of some of my favorite missions from Warcraft 3. You've missed a few formatting errors in the timeline though, and some of the "sin'dorei perspective" sections are stuck inside the spoiler tags of the "historical event" sections. Otherwise I'm interested to see who you include in the famous Elves section.

There, I think I fixed all of the spoiler issues. I'm glad you took the time to go through and read most or all of them, because I probably would have never noticed the error! I'm -planning- on having four different posts, each with their own subsections. The first of course, is, Elven History. Hopefully the next will be Society with subsections that include current CotH Blood Elf noble houses, the main Blood Elf Organizations (Farstriders, Scryers, Blood Knights, etc.). It will end with Wretched, and then segue into the 'Arcane' post which will have to do with the hows and whys of Blood Elven Arcane Corruption and Addiction, and then a bit on the Sunwell. I haven't quite worked out a forth post, but I hope to come up with something. I had four on my Tauren Guide, and I'd like to try and keep the trend going.

The only problem is, I'm not sure if I can fit all of it into one post. I think there's a cap to characters that tops off around 20,000 and as it stands I'm at 5400, and I'm not even half way done with the first section.

Well, I'll be sure to refer to this guide whenever I need to look up something, or want to double check.

I've already done it twice now. ^_^

Edit: DISREGARD FOR I AM A NUB.

Edit again: Why use a different dating system though? It leads to a bit of confusion as I didn't know there was a difference in calendars in the first place. I would, in all honestly, just use the dates that the wiki gave us. I don't see elves in game using different dates for what happened at least, or am I missing something?

It's a good guide thus far beyond my initial confusion about the dates and learning there is apparently two different calendars [possibly more if the other races date things different as well]!

I'm not quite certain, but I believe he's using a calendar that begins counting up from the date of exile. In essence, a Blood Elven calendar. While not necessarily helpful for a profile, it does put things into perspective interestingly.

This if great, I love it! The one condition I had when making a blood elven character is to include all the events of TFT that most people seem to forget about their past. When blood elves truly lived up to their name!

I wonder thought, about the calender. What event determined the year 0? And is this calender flavour or just some awesome lore I just overlooked?

Would this mean that up to this point, high elves were immortal?

Not every human was racist, but they would have also feared execution for betrayal. Elven and human friends would have been forced to cut one another down in the vile pit the Sin’dorei had been imprisoned in.

This is the EXACT basis for Rowgen and Riael's connection to each other, as foretold in my "Knew your enemy" post.

From my understanding, Bovel, the Highborne's lifespans gradually became shorter as the generations passed as they were separated from the Well of Eternity.

Least, that's my interpretation of it.

I picked these dates specifically because they -are- what our Blood Elven characters should be using. You don't see Muslims in Iran using our traditional Christ-centric Julian system, or we using their Islamic calendar associated with the Hiraj. The specific dates of years are based off of the date given in this short story, this guide's namesake. It's considered canon as far as I know, and was approved by Blizzard. You can read it by clicking on the link at the bottom of that page, and on it, is a date that I have caused to correspond with other dates of major events. If you'd like to see those major events, for most of them, you can simply check the CotH Official Timeline, they'll probably be on there.

Perhaps I can add the date associated with Humans and the Common tongue next to the elven dates as well to avoid confusion!

Those Highborne that stayed on Kalimdor (See: Those that didn't become High Elves) actually remained immortal through the use of a demon, siphoning off his latent magical energies and using them to sustain themselves. In recent days this power has been waning, and is the purpose/story line the Dire Maul raid. Anyone that left Kalimdor would have lost their immortality -before- they had become full blown High Elves. That being said, it seems to have been a rather abrupt change... Much like the switch from Night Elf to Highborne is, with the use of arcane magic. It happened in one generation, Dath'Remar Sunstrider being one of the first High Elves, and one of the most influential Highborne.

Huh, that's rather cool then! Sadly I can't get to the short story, I get blizzard saying that the link is no longer valid T_T. Makes sense that they would date everything differently. Considering the major different in the years, does that imply that an 'elven year' is in fact different from human year? Ga, Blizzard, why do you not tell us these things!

I demand they come up with their own fancy month/day names as well. I feel weird using real month names for a fantasy universe and avoid them as much as possible.

Anyway: Awesome find, means my Belf knowledge is only growing!

Since it is Vashj pointing this out just a few years back I'd assume that it means that the sin'dorei were in fact NOT immortal up the the Sunwells corruption?

Well, since the Sunwell is just another Well of Eternity, I think it's safe to assume that people who lived at it's shores were immortal. Based on its size compared to the size of the Well of Eternity though, I doubt that its power stretched very far. And thus, to very few. If you were lucky enough to be one of the Sunwell's custodians, then you probably had an extended lifetime however. We don't see many actual -homes- on Quel'danas however, so not too many people probably lived there full time.

I just noticed that the Third War & Rise of the Blood Elves and BC & WotLK have gotten the same years, which cannot be correct.

Woah... I had the last five or six years off by, well, several years. I went back and edited the dates, so they should all be accurate now. Thanks for pointing that out. :P

Using this as an outline for Riael's timeline and stories about his past I want to make. Though I keep running into issues between "our" official timeline and this guide. I assume these dates are based on Wiki/game info?
