Peerless Pressure - The Art of Making RP
#16

For the love of the Divine Kretol stop complaining about your character not getting RP or no one wanting to RP with it when you, the player yourself made the character into an introverted, quiet, small-minded, hateful, arrogant and demeaning person! You -wont- connect well with others in casual RP, that's a fact cause most people don't want pick a fight and choose to ignore or walk away.

To connect your "dark" character with others, start out with reaching out OOCly. Speak to others about a common past that would make the other character interested and a bit tolerant against yours. For example that they fought in the same squad during a war, were trained under the same magister, their families have been friends or even allies since they were both young or even that they just ran into each other before at some point in an event that would make a "reunion" interesting. (This can be especially useful when tying connections across the factions.)

Another way around this -- and one that I have found works be-a-u-ti-fully in the past -- is to find a companion with which your character spends a lot of time. There are a variety of reasons this could occur:
  • Childhood friend
  • Family member (however removed)
  • Fought together for a period of time
  • Business colleagues
  • Boss
  • Saved his life at some point
  • Honor-bound due to some past event
  • Working together to complete for sort of monumental task
  • Whatever!

Assuming that this second character is an extrovert, your antisocial character could be forced into associating with others with whom he probably would not otherwise give the time of day. That character also serves as a phenomenal foil for yours (and the humor that arises can be awesome! And I'm not usually a humorous person -- I take myself too damned seriously).

I think that too often people approach roleplay with the idea that their characters wouldn't get involved in certain (often many) things, resulting in a severe lack of roleplay. This, in turn, causes these same people to consistently complain about the dearth of roleplay. However, I don't think that it's good to instantly think of things that your characters wouldn't do; instead, approach it as an exercise in determining how your characters would get involved.

In the past, Kret had an amazing signature that outlined this perfectly. Thanks to the awesomeness of the Search on the forums (and the fact that I had referenced it once before!), I was able to find the exact quote:

Quote:Try to never just say, "My character isn't interested in that adventure." A lot of people mistake this for good roleplaying, because you are asserting your character's personality. Wrong. Good roleplaying should never bring the game to a screeching halt. One of your jobs as a player is to come up with a reason why your character would be interested in a plot. After all, your personality is entirely in your hands, not the DM's. Come up with a reason why the adventure (or the reward) might appeal to you, no matter how esoteric or roundabout the reasoning.

A good thing to roleplay a dwarf without the dwarf accent

* Holynexus says in a dwarf accent "Hi, I'm Drena. Got some loots for me?"
[Dwarven] "Hi! I'm Drena, wanna fisticuffs?"

They love you!
Allons-y!

Have you hugged a dwarf today?

As I've been hearing more about people having trouble finding RP, decided to give this a bump in the hopes that some of the newer CotHians (and maybe some of the older ones too) could benefit from it!
