Battle System Idea
#16
A few other things to take into account is the difference between two people of the same level where one of them has gear with actual stats that they use for RP whereas the other one has cosmetic gear which is gained via in-game commands with no stats what-so-ever. This would cause for a pretty large shift in who would be capable of winning the duel. We tend to focus more on aesthetic appeal of clothing and armor here rather then what stats they have and how shiny they look.

Already taken into account Bounty; with proper player understanding, it should work perfectly well. As an example I again point to my one encounter, of a lvl 80 warlock fighting a lvl 80 priest. The priest had good gear, the warlock had the beginner gear (and a fishing rod), due to RP reasons. The warlock won, due to the separate character skills (as opposed to the player skills)

From what I understand, you're proposing that people could simply stage a fight using in-game abilities? Pre-determine the outcome, and act it out blow for blow?

That is in fact what I am proposing.
Another option is to just let loose!*'** XD

*assuming everyone is alright with that

**perhaps sticking to only certain abilities? =o

Ah, I see.

I happen to prefer what's commonly called trust, but there is nothing stopping you and another willing person from having at it!

I'll put it bluntly - This is a roleplaying server. If you want to do Player vs Player combat, you've come to the wrong place. The whole roll system is a placeholder for roleplay, and allow me to explain why.

Each time you roll your dice, you're 'forced' to write an emote. Your opponent writes one in return. Writing emotes is roleplaying. Roleplaying is the core of this community. Other than that, as stated before me, grunts would have an insane advantage, huge battles are impossible, and Cosmetic gear would lose against properly acquired gear every time.

Kira, I know quite well what a rolling system is. I play D&D.

Player vs Player combat isn't what I'm describing, I am describing a form of Character vs Character combat using the in-game battle mechanics. I have addressed all of those issues that you brought up. Basically Kira (and I suppose anyone else?), the only thing that is stopping this form of combat from being a fun way to RP combat is your attitudes and ingenuity. If you like it, or are curious, try it out. If you aren't, then don't.

No need to apologize! Did I come off as antagonistic? XD

I'm extremely tired, sorry if I did. Working through the nights on school work. =/
It never ends.... le sigh.

Okay, to sum up everything people said before and after me.

Not many people would agree to settle disputes with the in-game mechanics, doesn't matter if the fight is staged and the winner is declared before it even started or not. There are some, who would agree to it, just propose it to your RP partners in RP situations. If they agree, no one can stop you from doing it. It is a form of RP fight after all. If not, you two should agree to another way of making the fight.

Roll fights can also take the IC experience, age, size, strength, speed and what not under consideration. You just need to agree with your RP partner on certain roll bonuses.
Example:
Veteran Swordsman vs Regular Soldier
They both agree that the veteran would be far more experienced. But no one is immortal and unbeatable, so the Regular Soldier should also have a chance. Therefore, the Veteran Swordsman gets +20 to all his rolls (If he rolls 10, it is actually taken as a 30).
This is merely an example, since there are no two situations alike in RP. But roll bonuses can be negotiated on the spot, before the fight.

For the ones too lazy to read the whole post: nothing is stopping you from making an RP fight through the in-game PvP mechanics, if both sides agree.

Before AND after you dast? Kinda presumptuous of you, isn't it? In any case, I'd like your post if I could. =)

You're forgetting I posted earlier as well. This is what I meant by "after me".

I'm very heavily into RP and stuff, but with the length some combats have, I'd join a gladiator/brawly/combaty guild that (under strict PvP-balancing conditions) resolves (frequent) inter-member combat (at least) via PvP (even if only to see it it works) - the visual is often satisfactory, if not written satisfactory. Perhaps even some PvE, where appropriate (A lot of paranthesises, huh?)

A related idea I brought up a while back (that could be worked into such a guild/group/thingie) (shame I lack the time to run such):

PS: If I was truly a purist of RP, though, I wouldn't be caught dead in a game with -GRAPHICS-, gasp.

Well DaveM, all we would really need to make such a thing is one lvl 80 of every class, to determine what works and what doesn't. =D
