High Seas
#1
Cylest felt the fresh breeze as it danced across the waves of the ocean. The water here was dark; hiding what lived beneath in its deep blue-gray fog. She was keeping an eye out for anything unusual, part of her duty as Ocean Guide, like a soldier she performed her duty, head swiveling from Captains Deck and the front deck back and forth.

Her stride was assured and she easily ducked and leapt through men’s paths as they worked to ensure the sails were down and everything top-side was tied down. There was a storm growing, she could feel it, and had informed the Captain, moments later the ship was like a kicked ant hill, all hands on deck.

She smiled at a man as he bent tying a length of rope. Their trust and loyalties had been hard won; they had thought her a burden, until she had proved herself. Today was going to push her limits, but she smiled at those who saw her, and returned the gesture in kind.

The winds were picking up and main mast shook, as the wave threw the boat sideways. It lurched at an odd angle, two men falling into the rapidly choppy sea.

“Everyone tie down!” the Captain bellowed, as he looked across the ship spotting her in her red and golden robes. Her eyes were hard as she nodded lifting her arms, she turned and with arcane prowess she opened herself to the Ley Lines, suddenly the ship was up right, surrounded by a storm, but seemingly encased in a bubble. The two overboard sailors swam to the starboard decks, where a rope ladder was dropped for them.

Her own arcane waters spun in a circle around them, causing the waves to break on them, they were surrounded by water, so she used it to her advantage. The rains from the sky fed her spell, the sky was suddenly hazy and wavy as her bubble was formed, the rain washing it’s self into the sea and away from the ship.

Deckhands starred in wonder as the bubble surrounded them, they felt as if they walked on dry land, so calm was the sea below them. Cylest could not maintain the spell while the ship moved, and the Captain ordered the anchors dropped. Men ran now to do as told, still tied to the masts and security rails along the decks.

The storm lasted all of 15 minutes, and was gone. Not uncommon with squalls at open sea. Cylest lowered her arms, releasing herself from the Lay line. It had buffered the draining effects of magic to her body, but she still sat, handling so much power made her feel like a land-lover at sea for the first time.

The Captain approached her, as he often did. “You could be doing far more than protecting this ship Miss, you know this as well as I and the Crew. Seeing the things you do, the way you work your spells with the knowledge of your own limitations yet expanding upon your abilities… You hold much honor in my eyes, we have two men’s lives to thank you for, if you’ll pardon me I will go yell at the crew now.”

She laughed at him, as he walked away barking orders. She sat back looking up, the sky was clearing. Why did she stay? What was holding her back?
