Help with making a backstory?
#1
Hey CoTH, I need some help with making a backstory (or two.) Admittedly, I'm not the Supreme Lord High Master Shadow MacDaddy of the Nether of making backstories, but I can make good elements for them - for example, my gnome is gonna have PTSD, from the Gnomeregan takeover. But the backstory for him...

Can anyone give any suggestions for a backstory? I'd appreciate it loads, and maybe even give you an e-cookie. :D

Well, just from the (hilarious) picture you linked, if you're rolling a gnome, I would suggest that you tried creating a gnome that wasn't so adept in the sciences, as the stereotype often goes, and subsequently tried to make his name and livelihood by alternate means. Perhaps this gnome was in the military, seeing active combat through the Second War and partaking in the failed defence of Gnomeregan during the disaster? (However, I suggest you handle your portrayal of PTSD with care for obvious reasons.)

For any other characters, you'd have to give us their concepts, or at least something to work with. However, I would suggest you read through some racial lore on WoWPedia just to get some gears turning for ideas. If you'd like to discuss this gnome in particular further, you're welcome to giive me a shout, or alternatively, drop Caravan a line. She seems to have taken all gnomes as her demesne.

Thanks, Sol!

As Gnome Queen, I'd be delighted to run some Gnome concepts with you. My main and title character (Caravan, duh :3 ) veers from the Gnomish stereotype, but I also have very "typical" Gnomes.

I will echo Sol's caution regarding PTSD, and that is something we can discuss further, but I would say that if you preferred to play a Gnome who got his name from his experience with the military, it'd be cool to have him go that route because he wasn't so good with engineering and science.

:) Feel free to send me a PM or hit me up on that there Skype.

I like the idea of a technologically less adept gnome. Maybe even an outcast gnome, who became a technophobe? He's also a mage, and I'm not sure if the military had mages at the time.

Also, the other character was going to be a human warlock who is a sort of plague making type of guy. Whenever I see Plagueheart, those goggles always make me think of a biohazard mask.

You could also make this gnome reliant on Technology. Such as he uses a quiet advanced gun. But the hitch is he has no clue how it works or how to fix it. All he knows is point and shoot. It would be interesting to see. Gnome Tinkerer talking to this said gnome with fascination in his eyes about this beautiful gun and starts asking questions.

"My god! What gear level is this at!?" (As you can tell, I happen to be one of those using tech without knowing how it actually works)

".. What..?"

Now this would be a fascinating idea if your gnome was in self-imposed exile. The technophobia could definitely come about by the horrors the gnome would have witnessed in the Fall of Gnomeregan. It would also be interesting to explore the "meaning" of such a gnome: A gnome without technology is...what? How does such a gnome live?

Caravan, herself, is more or less in self-imposed exile (as she harbors feelings of guilt for living abroad during the Fall and doesn't really associate with Gnomes anymore) and though she has no technological talent or science savvy, she still takes advantage of tech. Would your gnome completely forego all use of technology?

I SEE HOW IT IS. /me Gnome stomps.

* muhaha8 peers at Warlock statement, and dons his Warlock hat atop his Gnome hat. "I'll help out with that one if you wish, Nymus! Just drop me a line and we can get in touch."

Well, an Amish Gnome would be a new idea - there's certainly the clothing and facial expressions / hair for it! I can see the dialogue now...

"That's quite a toothsome brain y'got there, forsaken."
