I'm looking to improve as a role player. What am I doing right? What am I doing wrong? What's something new I could do?

In-Game

When I'm engaged in role play, I usually tune out whatever is happening in OOC. I keep IC/OOC chat windows separate to make sure of this. This is mainly because I don't like explaining my character's actions and thoughts, especially in the middle of the role play. I prefer playing my characters over talking about them. This is a personal preference, and in no way am I implying that such a preference is the "right" or "wrong" way.

The reason that I mention this is that beyond a character's attitude, I have no way of accurately gauging what the player behind that character really thinks. The characters I enjoy playing tend to incite anger, suspicion, and sometimes violence. However, I know that the player's opinion is probably not the same. I'm also interested in knowing what needs improvement and what I need to avoid changing. I want others to be able to enjoy and understand me as a role player, not just my characters.

List of Active Characters

Bastius, "The Goat"
Bastius is a former Auchenai caretaker corrupted by the dark energies of D'ore. Following his quest to pursue lost, holy scriptures in the Eastern Kingdoms, the Draenei now finds himself in the company of the Black Harvest.

Bick Leybolt
Bick is the twin brother of Bigli. They both graduated from the Learning Halls of Gnomeregan and College of Dalaran. Whilst Bigli spent more time with their father, a Kirin Tor Archmage, Bick grew closer to their mother, a published author and mechanostrider racer. His passion revolves around the combination of technology and magic. The Leybolt twins now spend the last years of adulthood scouring Azeroth for the next great discovery. Naturally, the two find themselves involved in plenty of shenanigans. (Bigli Leybolt is role-played by Vizkus)

Inactive Characters

Marty Fizzleshank
Marty is the short-tempered publisher of the Common Man's Quarterly. His business was run out of Stormwind after he began printing articles that criticized the "soft" and "corrupt" Military. Marty escaped to Hearthglen to rebuild. Since, his recent issues have been biased, often trying to monger hatred towards the Forsaken and Blood Elves in the city. Regardless of whether Marty was born mean or just doesn't give a hoot, conversations tend to be blunt and quickly escalate into heated debates.

Alcippe
Alcippe is a superstitious troll of the "old ways". After being traded to her husband at a young age for a spear, she used her knowledge of the spirits and Loa to become a well-respected member of her new tribe in Stranglethorn. Before passing her child-bearing years, she gave birth to her only daughter, Lith. Alcippe was always more concerned about "number one", which ensured that there was never a dull moment with Lith. However, when her husband arranged himself to wed their daughter, a move that would rob Alcippe of any respect and standing, she confronted Lith in public. During the climax of the inevitable argument, Alcippe killed Lith. She quickly fled to nearby Grom'gol and sought refugee in the passing Stormshade Clan.

John Maximus
Max is a three-war veteran and Scarlet runaway. Not yet content to die, he has dusted off his warhammer and brings a sense of compassionate fanaticism to the Inquisition.

Wesh Snowstrider
Wesh is a mild-mannered, Blood Elf information broker hopeful for his people's future. Although he lacks the ability to wield a blade, he is ready to do whatever it takes to keep things moving.

Fredrick Kappel
Fredrick is an Undead Alchemist serving the Argent Crusade. Rejecting his state and Forsaken doctrine, he looks to return to the days before the Scourge. It's said nothing short of a miracle can give the undead true life, and that is exactly what he intends to find.

Forums

I enjoy my writings, but I'm interested to know if others do. This is the best way to get constructive criticism and opinions on my story lines. In terms of skill, there's only one way to go from here.

Bastius is -fun- to play with, because he is just so confusing, crazy, and hard to keep up with. Maeia nor Cristovao are violent types, so they actually try staying calm with his half-baked rambles and follow through his conversations without inciting him. That, to me, is a lot of fun as a Role Player.

Beyond that, Bastius just has an aura about him. He disturbs me, he's creepy, he's got something... palpable about him, I guess. He makes me want to know more about him, his broken mindstate, and how far he's gone to get there.

OOC, you're a very flexible and friendly fellow and great fun to collaborate works with. Though little has been done, the Father Hughes story is a lot of fun!

I enjoy RP with you, Spix... when we used to have some. Nowadays, I feel bad and horrible for leaving you hanging when life got in the way on my part and the Red Glove story became inactive. All I can really say is that I apologize for not keeping up any expectations you and your buddies had for me.

Captain Crunch, I'll make sure the keep Bastius creepy. I'm sure, after some elbow grease, we'll get the ball rolling on the story line. :)

Immy, I understand the situation and appreciate you taking the time to apologize, even though it really isn't something you can control. A couple of years ago, I was abandoned, ignored, and sometimes screwed-over by GMs-that-no-longer-be. My prestige applications and follow up messages went unanswered for almost a year among three GMs, events were halted in their tracks, and a special profile request was completely forgotten twice for months on end. Since I've returned, I've never had high expectations for busy GMs. However, you're the only one who has taken the time to explain what was going on and apologized for it. Even though I don't blame you. I don't even feel transgressed regarding the situation; I'm just sad that things turned out the way they did. Life happens. Still, your sincerity is slowly allowing me to build up trust in the staff, again.

In all, I'm looking for a way to get active in the Red Glove again, and I'm not so much expecting things from you as much as I'm looking forward to being able to role play with you again. Marty might be the key, since Bastius and Alcippe have moved on. Perhaps it's time for me to think up a new character. I'd like to let you know, though, that the role play we did have has been the foundation on which both of my two favorite characters have grown.

Thank you, both of you!

Updating (bumping)

Added some old and new characters: Fredrick, Wesh, Bick, and Maximus

Dug up an old story: Blackwell

There's probably some less-than-positive opinions floating out there regarding Bastius. I'll admit, that as a writer, I've always been confident about his personality in story lines. However, as a role player, I've reconstructed his character more often and frequently than I should have. It's mostly been an effort to adapt to the change in medium. Just throwing it out there, but if you got some brewing thoughts - I'm more than willing to hear you out. If you don't feel like sharing, all I can give you is the knowledge that I'm getting it squared away.

So you know how I said Bastius was a totally creepy rambling wacko?

Well he's even CREEPIER when he's speaking in his right mind. I want to see more of his development with Maeia!
