Lox Ponders: Event Rewards?
#1
This isn't so much going to apply to events in general; let's get that out of the way.

I am planning an event right now where I hope to be able to devise some sort of setup that allows for a team-based competition where, at the end, a single person/team (depending on the direction I want to go) will be crowned the "winner" of the competition itself. Because of the storyline surrounding it, "rewards" will be handed out in a few different directions that have a purpose in the story, but I also want to give something solid for the big "winner".

To give some background to the event... Think survival-themed game-show. "Hunger Games" inspired, except a lot less deadly, slightly more relaxed and peaceful. There's still a lethal element to the game and people will be painfully aware of this and constantly reminded, but it's not going to be quite as extreme as the aforementioned example. It'll be a mix of puzzle-solving, mini-games and outright survival horror in some cases. A nice mix of it all to cater to different tastes but still with that lingering threat that you're at the mercy of someone else all along.

At the end of it all... I want someone to "win". And that winner needs a reward of some kind. If you were to take part in this kind of event, what sort of reward do you imagine you'd like to get? What would be meaningful, for all the effort put into participating? Mind, it wouldn't be something outrageous. We wouldn't want your fellows to get jealous. A token reward that still can hold great significance ICly, or just to your character.

I need suggestions, though. I'm a bit at a loss. Help!

What sort of reward could you imagine to be meaningful?

To ensure that the reward will suit the winner no matter what, I'd suggest offering to grant one 'wish' of the winner's. If it is within the power of those in charge, one request will be fulfilled.

To give an example, let's imagine a goblin merchant won. Perhaps he desires a lump sum of cash to help get his business off the ground. He might, instead, want one of his main competitors 'eliminated' so that his business can thrive. Suppose a night elf won, and wanted to seek out a long-lost loved one. A dwarf could request an expeditionary team to accompany him on a quest to reclaim a family heirloom. So yeah, personal stuff!

If you wanted to, you could take this a step further to provide more roleplay, and have the people in charge hire adventurers and mercenaries (players!) to fulfil these requests for our winner. The acquisition of the reward would probably make for an event by itself, that way.

Just some ideas, anyway.

I don't quite understand the hesitancy about jealousy. This is a competition, is it not? There's going to be bitter feelings, no matter what.

Or do you mean jealousy OOCly?

Something is both meaningful and not groundbreaking...

What about:

-Titles! Everyone loves having extra words floating over one's head. I mean, who wouldn't love to be "<Name>, Slayer of Stupid, Incompetent and Disappointing Minions"? Ahem. Though this would be more of an OOC reward really, unless the title itself is something that the person could use ICly to impress others. I doubt someone wouldn't be taken aback if they were presented to "Bob the Undying"!

-Mounts. They are something everyone likes, although IMO we don't use them ICly that much.

-A fun item such as Picnic Basket, Mushroom Chair, etc.

-Perhaps a piece of armour or a weapon that wouldn't be easily attainable IC (thinking about those pieces that shed light that put a discotheque to shame. Or something else shiny and cool that doesn't give the character a real advantage).

EDIT: Actually, scratch that, the wish idea is a lot better!

@c0rzilla: OOC jealousy, yeah. I want to play it safe and not conjure up a reward that is otherwise unachievable. That's not saying it should be something you could just trot off and pick up once the event is over if you weren't the lucky winner, but it shouldn't be something that anyone else couldn't get. Not even during Winter's Veil.

Not sure how much sense I'm making. \o/

@Ghaskan - Hey, no, actually, why not combine the two? If someone desired a reward that you could find an item to represent, making an event out of obtaining it would be very cool. You could also ask for things like reputation with a certain faction, or indeed, a title to be known by.

Hey Lox that's a great idea you thought of on your own good job

Events should usually give out rewards. At least that was the general rule from where I am coming from. Now that I am hosting my own events I start to ponder. "What would be okay to give the player as a reward and what would not?" Without streching my characters wallet to the point where it just does not seem real. Players often seem to forget that there is a surrounding around them in which there are -things-. Things you can look at, open, search. Mainly because many event hosters seem to skip this idea and economy plays no real impact upon the server. It is all left down to common sense. In the end the player does not seem to look out for these things and just gets on with the story of the event. Do A to get to B and then end. Simple as that.

As for people being jelous well that is something you will not be able to avoid. One side will always be angry at the other and vica versa. Sadly you cannot please them all and that is how it goes. There will be always -someone- to complain and say "Hey I don't like this."

If people get jealous that's their problem, imo.

If you wanted, you could give out a booby prize for participation.

We'll make them wish they weren't winners. Winners of your event get a free kiss from Jof'waz, courtesy of The Love Exchange.

Gotta' put my eggs in the same basket as @Delta , here. Good idea. It also places boundaries on the rewards.. of course, preposterous wishes won't be fulfilled, but it still gives the winner a great reward shot!

Love the idea, Lox. Question, though; would the event be something like Kidnapped, where it's a long event over time? The Hunger Games (example you used) didn't happen in one day, of course. :P

It seems the wish idea has support, and it seems the most versatile of the suggestions so far. ... So it won't be a reward given to the wrong person who has no use for it, even if that sort of situation would've been hilarious. Oh well. Thank you for the suggestions!

If you still have more ideas, I'm open to it! For other types of events than the one I described above, as well, since it'd be pretty neat to be able to reward people more often.

(Also, @Valicor, yes. It'll be pretty much like Kidnapped. Same base concept, but... different flair.)

I wouldn't mind having team/person based events and the reward is some sort of small keep or castle that the winner gets to keep (Of course, it's very open to siege by the losing team, leading to another event.) It'll be a fun 'permanent landmark' thing that will help keep people roleplaying in the area and out of GM Island.

Imagine having this small keep that some shmuck mysterious guy offers to two factions. Faction 1 wins the keep, has to maintain it and has to defend it against the previous owners or faction 2. The events spawning from the said chain reaction could be endless.
