Introduction: WhenStartsAlign
#1
First and foremost: Tell us about yourself, as a player:
When I do gaming, I'm totally in it for the role-playing aspects of RPG's, and not the grinding and fighting. I know different people have different parts of RPG's that appeal to them (if you like The Forge, the GNS Theory), but I tend to stick to parts of RPG's that support narrative and immersion (the "N" and "S" in GNS). The best parts of RPG's (tabletop or otherwise) are always the interactions with the other players (IC'ly if I can help it).

What country do you come from? What is your primary language?:
I'm from the US, and I speak English relatively well. I know just enough to order a beer in several other languages.

How did you get into Warcraft?:
I had some friends who played it a while ago, and they introduced me to it. I'm still quite new to the details of WoW, but the wiki is very helpful.

How did you find us? Did anything in particular draw you to the server?:
Google dug you guys up when I was looking for RP servers. Oddly enough, it was only when I stared looking up background info to help pick a character theme that your site popped up in the top results. Guess it's a popular one, eh?

What kinds of roleplay do you enjoy?:
Let me establish my background: I've been play in tabletop games for years, and have been running several long-running games for the last 8-ish years.

I love being a supporting character that follows some ideal. It makes it easier to figure out what the character would do, instead of what I'd do. Some characters I've done are serious (like a father that was forced to shoot his possessed daughter in the face) and some are light-hearted (a pacifistic priest of the wine-god who solved his problems with sex and drugs). They all tend to be memorable, or at least I'd hope so.

Now, with all of that said, I'm looking forward to trying out the RP in WoW. While I haven't specifically done it before, it seems that your server is a good place to start.

What is your favorite race/class? Why?:
I haven't played enough WoW to really have a favorite yet, but I'm leaning towards making some variety of Forsaken Priest. Since I know that Forsaken are outsiders with a limited history, I figured that they'd be an easier starting point than some of the other races (like the longer lived elves and such). Now, I'm looking at Priest because there's a couple options for religion in that faction that sound kind of neat, and I'm still trying to figure out which one I like best. Probably a Shadow Priest, if I can figure out a nice healer build.

What are your expectations of this server?:
I expect that the quality of RP on the server will be higher than what I'd find elsewhere. While I haven't been doing WoW long, I do know what appeals to me isn't necessarily common on the main servers. If things go well, I expect that a solid chunk of my free time will be spent here.

Out of all of our rules and regulations listed on our server, which appeals to you the most?:
I like the Maturity rules. When I used to run games with big crowds, we called these the "common sense" rules. If people aren't going to exercise basic social skills and reasonableness, people aren't going to want to play with you. The other rules are fine too, but this is the difference between having a good time, and feeling like your teeth are being pulled.

Did you know that we have a Mentor Program? It's entirely voluntary and you as a new player can sign up for it right now in your introduction! Are you interested in signing up to be assigned a Mentor? If so, say so here (Please enter at least "Yes" or "No"):
That sounds great! I'd love the opportunity to at least have some kind of orientation for the ongoing plots and such on the server.

Lastly, tell us a story! It can be short, it can be long; but most importantly, we want to see your work in action. Go!:
(this is copied from a document I wrote to introduce new player to Archmages in Mage: The Ascension)
There is a dark secret behind this Ascension business that everyone's always going on about. It's one that you can't really understand without beginning the road to Ascension yourself. Sure the world's a big weird place, where the Mundus of Consensus Reality holds dominance in this great layer-cake of planes that we call the Tellurian. But here's the rub: Ascension isn't about learning about the “what?” of reality, it's about knowing the “why?”. Why is reality the way it is? Sounds like a rhetorical question if I've ever heard one. Until you realize that its not rhetorical at all... it is vitally important to know. Why is reality the way it is? Because something out there made it that way. Something like a person, but not quite. Something like a god, but not quite. This Something is what the road to Ascension leads to. A Mage walking the road doesn't just come to understand the Something that makes reality the way it is, they become one. If you believe some folks, the mages were always of a kind with the Something, but just didn't know it.
Enough beating around the bush: Ascension lies in three facts. First, reality exists because sentient beings decided it should be so. I don't know who started it, but I can tell you that there have been several waves of them. I can't stress this enough though—reality happens because something decided it should. Physics? Someone thought that was a neat idea, and so it is. Machines? The one who created the concept of machines wanted toys to play with. Everything that is, is driven by this principle.
Secondly, mages aren't different from the things that invented reality. We don't know it, trapped in the mundane world we live in, but a mage is not a regular human anymore. It may look like a human, and act like a human, but that's just because it hasn't decided to stop pretending to be a human yet. The first step toward the road to Ascension is to realize that you have the choice. It's scary to look behind the mask that you've worn all your life, and see the … thing that you really are. A chunk of the cosmos that decided it would be fun to be a person. You aren't really human. You don't really feel things like humans do. You are a living narrative---the story of you and what mark you will leave on the world. You may be good at pretending otherwise, but the core isn't flesh and blood, its will and motivation.
Third, you can Ascend; it's happened before many times. What does that mean though? Let me give you an example: Ishvara Maya is one mage who ascended, becoming the shinma Avidya, the universal principle of Subjective Reality. Before the ascension, Maya was powerful in her own right, but no more than any arch-mage today. Somehow, Maya's story grew until the whole world was caught up in its narrative, making her into a universal aspect of reality. Because of her we have the Tellurian instead of just a single plane. After her ascension, it became retroactively true, that the world had always been thus. There are others you can look up on your own, but it won't help you ascend yourself. You're still part of their tales, after all, and so their road is already filled. Your narrative can grow to encompass the world too, that is the truth behind Ascension.
What does that change for you now? In truth, very little. You can still do the same things tomorrow that you did yesterday, and live a full life as a person living in the mundane world. You can do this, but no matter what, you can't forget that being a person is not your nature. Underneath it all is something fundamentally inhuman, and the only thing preventing it from growing into a monstrosity is your choices. You must choose the tale that you will tell.

Is there anything else you would like to add, ask, or otherwise clarify?:
Nothing that I can come up with right now, though I'm sure I'll pester whoever is unlucky enough to be nearby when (if) I start playing.

I, for one, am pretty flattered! Tabletop RPers are rarer in this medium, so I'm more than glad to have one aboard!

Quote:Since I know that Forsaken are outsiders with a limited history...

You'd be surprised, the Forsaken have a surprising amount of interaction considering they've only been around ICly for about half a decade now. Still, you're right on that call - them and goblins are the easiest to pick up, in general.

Quote:I do know what appeals to me isn't necessarily common on the main servers.

As someone who once worked on what would become Prologue (the most popular WoW RP server by far, at this point), I have to agree. The actual RP part is becoming fairly niche, which is always depressing.

Welcome to the CoTH, enjoy your stay! And I don't think most of the people bite…
Perhaps it is your imperfection that which grants you free will, that allows you to persevere against cosmically calculated odds. You prevailed where the Titans' own perfect creations have failed.

Thanks for having me everyone! Hopefully I'll be making my first character in a day or two.

Any suggestions? While I'm leaning towards Forsaken Shadow Priest, I'm open to other ideas.

If I were to give a suggestion, I'd make a flexible character that can find themselves in most roleplay locations and are able to travel around. Once you are accustomed to what roleplay goes on where, and who plays which character, then maybe you could look at creating a longterm character.

That's what I did, at least. I realise it doesn't work for everyone, especially if you're on the hunt for open RP and none seems to present itself. You could always look at hosting open RP sessions yourself, though, and then see who joins in.

The other option (if you find near to no open RP) would be to look at what active guilds are on the server, and then see if you could incorporate one of your characters into them. I find it's a little more difficult to do this because you often have to lean towards the guild's interests, unless it's a guild which happens to be lenient, but this generally means you will frequently find roleplay as opposed to searching.

In any case, welcome to the server! I hope you settle in nicely, I find that CotH can be a very rewarding place to roleplay once you've accustomed yourself to it.
