The Wheel of Time. Huge series but worth it IMO.

My step father is obsessed with the wot series and plans on sending them to him.

He best have read the Silmarillion if he enjoyed Lord of the Rings.

Wait, did I miss something in this thread or did really nobody suggest the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series? If he's looking for more fantasy now it fits great, even though the fantasy in the series is more low key than LotR it's definitely there.
