Lox Ponders: Failing Mentor Program
#16
Random idea:

A list of names for active players/staff members that are open and willing to take in the new players along with a short description of their play style, who they play most, ect. That way the peons can pick someone to learn the ropes from at registration rather than having someone assigned to them.

I had a vision just now of something like this:

> Peon signs up on the forums, expressing interest for the Mentor program.

> The special Mentor subforum is made available to the Peon usergroup from the get-go/all interested Peons get manually invited.
(> The Mentor program also gets a reference link and presentation inside the New Users subforum.)
> Peon is pitched a link to a "Welcome!" thread in said Mentor subforum.
> All Mentors receive super-invasive PM containing the same link with instructions to go say "Hi!". (*leers*)
> Mentor assigns self to the Peon in question after everyone has read their introduction and conferred in private.

...

Yep. In a perfect world this would be pretty neat if it worked. ;O; I'm not sure if it would work as well in practice as it does in Lox-theory. Thoughts on this?

That is the part in my eyes that has "failed" somewhat.

It wasn't and isn't an advanced system. They sign up now by answering yes or no to a question in their introduction template. We would rather they show an active interest and give them the choice to participate than force them into it if they don't want or need it. Plenty of people turned it down.

The more time I've had to think about this the more I come to the conclusion that it's not new-player inclusion that keeps the server population down (which is what the mentor program was there to aid), but things need to be going on all the time and be well advertised. Lets face it, when somebody else does the work of orchestrating RP, we're more prone to want to get on and do it.

But lol I'm one to talk I barely orchestrate RP anymore.

As for general things, I've never seen a person disregard a newbie in need of help on GMI, people are always eager to do it.

I think the actual question needs to be changed in its format; that, or removed in favor of a PM after approving a profile wherein they properly outline what the mentor system is about. I bet an actual person outlining what it's about, rather than the fairly brief question, would draw a lot more people in. At the very least, it'd hook some people in with a little bit of dialogue, rather than the officious, somewhat alienating nature of intros. We lose a massive amount of guests post-intro-approval, and we don't even know why - at the least, PMing all new approved joiners would help us figure that out, even ignoring all the benefits aside from that!

It does sorta sound like a "Teach you how to RP" thing, rather than a "Getcha into CoTH RP" sorta thing.

The problem is less anything about a mentor program, and more that there is nothing to help keep peons around.

Within a week, peons will get bored and depart. From what I know from occasional (admittedly haven't done it in a while) log ins, just... open RP is rare. And peons will move to new horizons if they don't think they can get anything out of this.

You need to get people out in the wild rping, in environments where new players can easily join, before new players will stay. A mentor system means little until then.

I agree with Xigo, but I'm unsure how to proceed. I find an issue often that hearkens back to Kretol's (old?) signature quotation about finding reasons for your character to be in RP, as opposed to finding reasons why not. I'll offer RP and try to get stuff going, (and I'm a culprit of this myself) and often get that their character wouldn't fit in that location, etc.

It's a sticky slope. We need more players if we're to get more open RP out there, but many new players don't linger for long. Me, I'll admit, I was a bit disappointed in the low open RP occurring back when I joined a few months ago. I didn't mind all that much, though, as I had other things I could do while I wait for the next big event that... almost makes it worth it. Nonetheless, I'm still here because it's a reliable source of online RP for me to partake in. Some people aren't patient enough to wait to get into RP.

Oh, if only RP could just *happen*.

Well, we're always open for suggestions or friendly efforts on the player side for how we can change the declining trend and motivate more players to be in-game and stick around.

The Mentor system was just one of the things we used to try to help it. It's by no means a solid solution, but it can be and has been of great help to Peons trying to get introduced to the server which makes it worth salvaging somehow, at least in my opinion.

Which is ultimately what this thread is about. If you have any ideas or want to open discussion about the subject of server activity in general and what can be done to turn that around, I'd prefer if a separate topic was created or people could pitch their suggestions at us either in PMs, the PD or on Skype. Or wherever you want to, really.

Whatever happens on that front, it needs to be a community effort. Even more so than we want the Mentor system to be.

(Still hoping for more suggestions on that front. I like what Sachi presented, to note.)
