Using spells and transformations ICly, 'Trends' On CoTH.

Nexi Wrote:Can we, then, decide on an official view of how much overlap exists between Warlocks and Magi? As I mentioned in another thread, I have a char who has ICly gone from Magi to Warlock, and from Warlock to Necromancer, but would she still ICly be able to cast the spells she learned in Dalaran even though Blizzard didn't give those spells to the Warlock core class and vice versa? I recall being called out by a few users for RPing Kimee as being able to cast something as simple as a Frostbolt... if only they knew I have RPed her as making portals too! I haven't done it in a while, of course, but only because I hate being yelled at. QQ
Remember: the fel magic that warlocks use is actually a corruption of normal arcane magic as a result of demonic blood (usually ingested by the caster, as is commonly the case of arcanists using fel magic). Warlocks are unique in that they have formed a connection with the fel energies, allowing them to cast without the frequent blood-imbuing that other individuals have to partake -- and even then they would only be able to do for a short time after drinking demonic blood. This is information established by various lore sources, such as the game itself and a number of roleplaying sourcebooks.

Things that I have read about fel magic tend to emphasize its corrupting nature: it corrupts the user's body, it corrupts the user's soul, and it corrupts the very arcane magic that is used to sustain it.

That said, it's been my interpretation that the magic warlocks use is, at its base, extremely similar (if not the same) to what mages use. The distinction is that the fel energy has perverted the magic, changing its substance. I've roleplayed that this also changes the result of the magic, indicating that certain things that were once available to the mage are no longer as easily done. This is an easy and lore-acceptable way to self-limit my character's powers and is, in my opinion, the logical conclusion to draw. The magic that Kimee originally cast as a mage most likely does not work exactly the same now that she has become a warlock and had her magic corrupted by the fel.

Your character still has the knowledge of what she learned as a mage; however, the magic that she now casts has been mutated by her connection with the demonic. There's an easily-drawn relationship between the Arcane/Shadow and Fire/demon-based Fire spells that warlocks use. Frost is a little more difficult and not something that I've personally pursued in the past (my mage-turned-warlock on retail was an arcanist, though I've been considering having Piroska eventually become a hydromancer).

The only thing that lore sources tell us is that fel magic is perverted arcane magic and that extended use of the fel tends to corrupt everything in which it comes in contact. How you proceed from there is open to your interpretation, but I do feel that a warlock wouldn't have access to all of the spells originally used due to the demonic magic's corrupting influence. However, that does result in potential new opportunities for roleplay: consider having a teleport or portal corrupted and the fun that might arise from that situation!

I find failure is a lot more fun in roleplay since it does allow for divergent, unexpected, and often enjoyable roleplay.

Regarding the whole combat thing and powers, prior to coming to this server I'd never done roll-based combat. It's an entirely new concept to me. When we had our characters fight, we instead worked together to create a fight that we both found acceptable and hopefully enjoyable. Sometimes we discussed what conclusion we'd like prior to the fight (if the fight was foreseeable based on what we had been roleplaying) or just went with the flow and had fun. Sometimes just communicating with the other person goes a very long way. As long as you put your egos aside and focus on the ultimate goal of roleplay -- weaving engaging stories and having fun -- everything tends to fall into place.

See Dilly, the problem with saying that, is that then we are expected to fill in the gaps for an inperfect median. When it comes to writing, there is bound to be many seperate holes from the overall plot, such examples would be Star Trek, White Wolf pen and paper games, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Stephen King novels, Soap Operas, and most written media. Simple fact of the matter is, it's incredibly hard to keep everything straight.

Yes, I've been trying to push for this for a while. Grakor had said a long time ago, that if it's a mechanic, most of the time you can do it. Almost -all- the time. We aren't going to tell people they cannot do an ability they have in game, for their class.

Does it mess up lore. Yep, damn the lore. If we didn't say this, then we might as well say noone can play Draenei either.

Edit: Also, Nexi, in regards to Warlocks using anything but Fel magic, what Piroska was saying is basically correct. The corruption that Fel leaves in a person's body, renders them unable to use most arcane magic. On CoTH, I have to say I don't support people who play a Warlock who can do mage things. Or, even a Necromancer that can do mage or Warlock things.

When your class changes like that, your magic use overall changes drastically. If this -wasn't- the case, then we could have warriors that somehow can use magic, rogues that can do Shaman stuff, and all the other class combonations you could think of.

These guys -are- all different. When doing a Necromancer prestige, we want people to use the class that's most similar to it. Reason being, that if they use spells ICly, we want it to make sense for a necromancer, not an ex-mage.

Necromancer's have other things to learn. By using other means.

When were they? I mean, we didn't say you guys couldn't use rogue abilities, but you'd have to find a way to make them realistic. You still have to use stealth in a believable way.

Even Shadowstep could be used as well, y'know. Just throw down a smoke bomb or something, don't go randomly teleporting behind people.

Same with vanish. Right now the only effective thing I can think of is a smoke bomb to render your opponent unable to see you flee, or a gas grenade (the one that makes people go BLEGH BLEGH COUGH COUGH WHEEZE) that distracts them when you run for it. But don't make it something that your opponent can't roll against, otherwise it's just godmodding.

EDIT: Edited slightly.

Well I was just saying that primarily in jest. But there was some truth to it. Because when I first rolled a rogue I was told my numerous people, and GM's ( not saying GM's aren't people but...You know what I mean ) as well that you couldn't use stealth. Period. It was then to the point where you could use it, as this thread suggests in probable situations Which lead to people saying if they could or could not be seen. One party ( usually the stealthy guy/gal would say I'm invisible as shiz. Which the observer who didn't want to get ninja'd would say -.- dude I can see you clear as day. Because it -is- day. Some times it would be night and there would be a probable reason to hide and others just don't want to get ninja'd. So I just didn't want to deal with defending my rp -every- time I wanted to be sneaky. So I just strayed away from the class, But this thread I agree with because I think spells should be used within reason. So If its dark out, or there is a smoke bomb one could be slightly hard to see. As that is there specialty this is really exciting because I have two accounts and not -one- rogue. because of this minor problem that has been brought up. So I'm glad this thread was made.

That's... odd. Stealth is basically just stalking around and being very careful not to make noise. But that can be a challenge in itself depending on the circumstances. I think maybe they were talking about stealth not turning you invisible.

Yeah I'm sure it was just like the telephone game. A GM says you can't turn invisible, someone interprets it as you cant use it. I hear it and go damn. * unstealths * So my point is not to criticize or rage those who fed me wrong information, but to just be happy that it is all clarified. Thanks for whoever started this thread, and Hawk and Rensin for the clarification of things. *tips hat* ITs rogue time!

I think the point of telling that don't use stealth, is that it doesn't turn you invisible. It's just walking around, so you don't have to use the thing that turns you invisible, at least if you're lvl 80. Because there's been folk saying "I'm stealthed, ya can't see me" and their standing in the middle of an inn. So it's to prevent that, I'd say. I don't believe it's -that- IC, is it?
