This will be implemented.

...

But not really.

This sounds awesome.

If I may make one question?

I know for a fact that a few of the IDs allow armor to show up. (I believe Broken Draenei, Goblins, Taunka and Tuskarr are among them. Dire Trolls too.)

Would they not be allowed tokens to get gear?
As someone wise once said, the important thing is never to be fearless or confident. Most people have more than enough trouble with both. The trick is to fake it, because if you learn to fake it properly, it's the same thing as actually having confidence.

This is indeed why I mentioned the 'in most cases' part.

For those that have gear showing, they'll probably have the chance to choose an RP outfit when they're first getting set up. They won't need tokens for the items.

Edit: Something else I should note that I've been thinking - these characters probably will be ineligible for resurrection if they die. Note that while a player can have only one of these types of characters at a time, there will probably also be a period of time between requesting them as well. For example, let's say three months. This will prevent folks from simply killing off one after they may get bored of them a month down the line and then request another one shortly thereafter.

As always, anything mentioned thus far can change.

I see this may allow us to be a "pet" more easily. If only warlockery was more acceptable.. then I could be a big poofy abyss that floats around (void walker). I suppose this would bring up the issue too though that communicating would be extremely difficult. Oh well. This would also allow people to use the "special" human models as well.

Something else to contemplate -

I've been thinking of potentially allowing two types of these custom characters: temporary NPC-type characters (for those running storylines or events that want an NPC-like entity to be temporarily involved), and then the aforementioned persistent characters.

Hmmm!

Sounds interesting, I'd of course love to see a Pandaren, though I'm not sure they'd come out of hiding or whatever. But I'd love to play one for sure. I can' think of too many races I'd like to play but my Top three would be.

Pandaren.

Brown Orcs.

Naga.

After that I can't really think of anything. Even though Naga are sweet, I don't see them rolling up to Booty Bay for a drink in a tavern. Ice trolls would be cool. OR I've always wanted to play as one of those Giant ripped trolls from Northrend. That'd be cool. Besides that I got nothing.

I'd love to play a Mag'har, but I am unsure if they would ever leave the Outlands.

(Speaking in terms of my Mag'har anyways)

Should I start writing a profile application for an ogre just in case this suddenly gets implemented? :D
I can safely say that of all the races in WoW, an ogre would be -the- choice for me. And it wouldn't matter if I had to be a regular simpleton, I love playing "dumb" characters (and I'm saying dumb because regular Azarothian ogres do not seem particularly bright no matter their social position, especially not compared to the ones in Ogri'lah who get their intelligence from magic crystals)

If anyone remembers playing a low-intelligence half-ogre in Arcanum, you know how funny this can be. And I would have great fun maybe working as a bodyguard to a goblin, once goblins come around that is. I'm positive at least one of them could use a big strong and fat fella to follow them around when he isn't stealing sheep for snacks.

Oh man, this has gotten me all excited, I've got to brush up on ogre lore now!

Hah. That would be cool :p

Just thought of another character I wouldn't mind playing: Wolvar. For the Northrend rp.

So i'd end up applying for either a Wolvar or Mok'Nathal...Prolly depending on if there were a lot of other folks rolling uncorrupted orcs or not.

My Mok'Nathal would be more or less orc, with lil to none ogre in him, likely His grandfather would have been fully half ogre, his father a quarter, and Grunnith (what my guy's name would be) would more or less have none.

My Wolvar would be a warrior of the frenzyheart tribe who battles the gorlocs and oracles....

This sounds like an awesome idea, actually. However, I do have one question.
If, for example, I have a Goblin character on the server and, when Cata comes, I roll a real Goblin. Will I have to wait the 3 months before requesting a new special character or will I be eligible for a new one immediatly as the first special character never was killed off but changed to a more definite form?

I'm going to have to say ethereals as well. While leaving Outlands would be virtually out of the question, think of the RP! Stormspire and Shattrath and Nagrand OH MY!

I don't really see why an ethereal would -have- to stay in outland. Granted, that's where the consortium, as well as most (if not every) other ethereal is, it clearly states they're driven by money, and money only. It's not a long shot to think that a few (if not -quite- a few) would travel to goblin towns on business trips.

I like the idea, and it would be a great bolster to the varity of RP already going on, but I would like to know that the process to be able to rp as a alternate race be well controlled. This is mainly because I'd rather seen one or two ethereals etc. that RP'd really well, rather than a horde of them that didn't

Just my two cents. Other than that, I would be behind this, even if I don't have anywants just yet (With exclusion of Ethreals)
