The voidness of the concept of evil..ness
#16
I think it's important to expand upon the idea of evil as perceived by players. The reason why this issue is so heavily discussed is that evil is only extremely rarely portrayed accurately. Being evil is often used as justification for how a character behaves, without examining the underlying reason why he is that way. This same problem occurs with various personality disorders; not only are they portrayed incorrectly, but they're often used as an excuse to explain a character's conduct and personality and behavior without any real understanding or thought. Essentially, it becomes an excuse rather than a viable facet of that character.

That's why staff members may outright deny profiles with personality or mental disorders.

As has been noted by a number of people in this thread, the vast majority of people do not view their actions as being evil. They justify their actions based on their own moral codes, the situation, past events, and various other Jedi mind tricks. They do not perceive themselves as being evil because, to them, they are absolutely in the right -- even if their actions are considered morally reprehensible by pretty much every individual who learns of them.

In order to recognize that one's actions are evil that individual must be inherently good. A person that realizes that his actions are evil clearly has a pretty good moral compass. Remember, the road to Hell is paved by good intentions.

Nexi's necromancer really strikes me as a good example of "why". That adorable little gnome is trying to create a better world through undeath. From that perspective anything she does is for the greater good of undeath. :)
