Possible Large-Scale Combat System
#16
I'm extremely fond of the Suikoden game series (well, at least the first two games). While there were a number of features that made the game appealing, the combat systems utilized within the game were fairly unique, particularly at the time of the release of the first game. There were three ways that combat has conducted:
  1. Group, consisting of a hand-selected group of six participants;
  2. Duel, which were of the main character versus a particular opponent; and
  3. Large-scale battles.

While the first two types of combat were fairly intuitive, the large-scale battles were a little more difficult. It can be best compared to a game of Rock-paper-scissors. Despite having up to 108 characters and having the ability to interact with them one-on-one (such as in group fights), they each were members of a group. At the start of a combat turn, you applied a group type to the fight, hoping that the one selected would be the optimal choice against your opponent. So, for example, while magical users were the best choice against foot soldiers, finding archers against your casters would be full of unfortunate sadness.

And usually a lot of pain.

I was a young teenager at the time I last played these games, but I always thought that it was an extremely good way to handle the increase of scale from one-on-one combat to large battles involving thousands of troops in two different armies.
