A Realmlist Tip
#1
Over time with my WoW playing, I realized there are a few tricks to realmlists that you can use. Some of you might know this, but trust me- not everyone knows and these are very handy tricks. Plus I explain the technical reason :D

1. You don't need patchlist: That's right, you don't need a patchlist on your realmlist. Everything works fine without it.
-Why? That's because servers don't have patchlists- only official WoW does. The patchlist was only changed so that you wouldn't get automatically patched by connecting to the WoW patchlists. When you start up your game, that patchlist tells your game that's the URL it has to go for to check if there are newer versions of the game. If there are, you get automatically patched. If not, it doesn't do anything. People used to replace the URL so it did nothing- however deleting that whole line is the very exact effect.

2. You can have multiple realmlists: Amazing, right? You can keep all your favorite servers in one realmlist. How to do it? You have your multiple realmlists each on a separate line, and if you're not playing on a realmlist- put a '/' infront of it. Only one realmlist maybe unslashed.
-Why? The game reads that realmlist for where to connect to. It looks for that line "set realmlist blahblahblah". It connects to whatever address is there. You can put just about anything in your realmlist (though I'd recommend to keep it strictly to realmlists) so long as it's proceeded by a '/'. That slash tells the game to ignore that line, that's not what it's looking for.

Let me quote my realmlist.wtf so you can see what I mean: (To prevent advertising for other servers I edited out the addresses)
Quote:/set realmlist randomserver.com
/set realmlist randomserver.com
/set realmlist randomserver.com
/set realmlist randomserver.com
/set realmlist randomserver.com
set realmlist coth.game-host.org
/randomserver run by Saturo a nazi
/randomserver by Silver but is down more

The two bits at the bottom are my notes. If you put a '/' before your notes (keep them short and I wouldn't experiment with symbols), you can put little notes about servers.

And to change the server, close your WoW game- open your realmlist, put a slash infront of coth's realmlist and remove the slash from the server you want to play and save the file (ctrl+s). Generally, you can tell which server is which by looking at the address, but it's helpful to keep a slip of paper nearby to tell what each server is.

This is really helpful for if you want to be a part of a mindless PvE/PvP server and at the same time be a member of Coth RP server (so you don't run around just screwing around since you're bored and potentially ruin RP for others).

Yays? :D

I was wondering how to do that, instead of having a bunch of realmlist files in my directory.
Thanks!

Glad I helped. It really is handy, because I used to have like seven realmlists and to change servers I had to go through all of the realmlists, find it, rename two of them, and then play. It just got tedious after awhile.
