Allowing Paladins and Death Knights to use daggers?
#16
That was my point ever since, and I've repeated it many times. Yet people've always gone back to visually equipping it. -.-

As a potential idea we could just have 3-5 different small dagger variations put in the OOC vendors with no stats at all and weapon type of one handed sword, it'd cover all the bases I think except for the small amount of time to quickly draft up the queries.

Ultimately I agree with not letting everyone run around with anything simply because we will see anime styled mages wielding http://www.wowhead.com/item=40343/armageddon.

But at the same time certain things should definately be possible in my opinion in any case, such as having a knife option available for asthetic purposes in any class. I would actually go a bit further and allow each class to wear one armour category higher than they normally can but that's a more difficult and time consuming task suited for a different discussion.

As the folks above me have said though, you can just say you have the dagger ICly, I've done that on a few accounts with a hidden dagger pulled from inside a jacket. The visual helps everyone around you become immediately aware of it as well though, and adds a bit to the flavour.

Why would a paladin carry a small dagger when he can carry a small hammer instead? :D

Every anime-style mage needs a sword like that.
All of them.

In honesty, why are we RPing on a WoW server instead at a table, or in a forum? You could still use the Warcraft lore, you could still have the same restrictions and freedoms..... we RP on a WoW server because we want the visuals, we want that "physical world" that the game gives us. So yes, when one wants their character to hold a dagger, while we can simply -say- that we have it, it is more satisfying to be able to show it, and to see it.

In the meantime, I'll just leave this here, shall I?

Begone with your logic, Sol! That's too simple a solution.

I don't understand why with so many weapon options already, this would be something that people would consider.

The same could be said about fist weapons. Anyone can hold a pair of brass knuckles or a set of claws. Anyone can hold a staff, too, or a sword. The point of being able to wield weapons isn't the fact that your character -could- hold them, it's whether or not they would -effectively- use them. Even Scarlets would probably not care about training their paladin's to use daggers when they are busy showing them how to use the light as a weapon, as well as giving them large swords to bash people with.

Let me put it this way. If people were to train someone about the subtlety of a dagger, they'd also train them the secrets of stealth and other combat moves associated with that, -not- how to wear big clunky armor or the like. You could argue that "your character is different", but really, do you -need- your character to be trained in how to use a dagger as a paladin or Deathknight? That's a lot like saying "Well, my warrior -does- know a fireball spell. But it fits his story since he was born in Dalaran, and it's the only spell he knows, so it makes sense. And since it's only one spell, it's alright, yeah?"

All the classes that have daggers, it makes sense because some how, in some way, the training applies. Warriors train with all sorts of weapons, casters need a weapon to get in close when their magic isn't doing it, hunters need a handy, small field weapon to help clean their kills, and -most- importantly, rogues needs something subtle that can confuse the enemy and his hard to spot.

All other classes? Again, it's like a warrior with a fireball.

Screw that. I know that on my casters, my weapon is just there as a stat stick and as an enchantment recipient. They're afraid to give me anything pointier because they're afraid that I'll impale myself.

I agree with you Rensin, but only to a certain extent; the training that paladins undergo should allow them to use daggers.

I assume that paladins are trained similarly to how old knights were: page, squire, knight. These fellows knew how to use daggers (not their main form of weaponry, agreed), as they were useful should a sword break in battle. Furthermore, they could be used to quickly get a knight out of broken armor when he was hurting, to cut a rope, or to slit the throat of a down deer.

That's the case of the Knight. A knight back then was formally where a lot of separate classes from WoW are taken from. You could argue that this is more of a "Warrior" than an actual Paladin or Deathknight, both of which are actually a lot like the warrior, but infact use magic along with the melee portion.

While they may -carry- a dagger, it does not mean it's an effective method of battle. I can't imagine a class that's typically clad in heavy armor, that's sent in to take care of -other- people wearing heavy armor, would find a dagger a useful means of fighting. It requires you to be agile, to get in close, and to quickly recognize any weak points of armor to exploit, all are things that are not suitable unless you are trained to be subtle and stealthy. Granted, as a last resort it is viable, but both Deathknights and Paladins have other means of secondary defense and offense when it comes to combat.

Here's a good way to look at things. If you were to play the character, and I mean -actually- play, based on stats and how to logically equip your character for like, raids and the like... and your sword degraded to the point of being unusable in the middle of a raid area... would you equip a dagger onto a Deathknight or a Paladin, because it's a viable option? You would not. Granted, I wouldn't for my warrior either, even if the option is there.

Sol has presented a viable alternative: the skinning knife. It's universally equippable, it displays the model, and it's better suited to the tasks that you have outlined (prying someone out of armor, cutting a rope, and slitting the throat of a deer) than the other dagger models available to other classes.

I gotta agree with you heavily. That fits the purpose of the "Universally usable" dagger. All the other options are intended to be more weapons for individuals who base their fighting styles around daggers.
