Prestige?
#1
I have a question for anyone who can answer, about prestige titles.

Firstly, Noble it a prestige title right? That's why it requires a special profile?

Well if so, I have heard of people not needing to make a special profile, because they became a noble IC through character progression.

I was wondering if this is possible for say, a spell-breaker?

My character Kanade has been going through training for the past two months now. Kyran has been teaching her and we have a system to decide when she is done. It goes a little like this:

She needs about 31 days of training.

I roll every day and the number I get is how well she did in the lesson.

>50 means she passed that day, and the days remaining is marked down.
<50 means she did not pass that day and so the number of lessons required does not change.

I was wondering if through this, she could become a spell-breaker without having to make a special profile?

Being a noble is not a class or a prestige, but a social status that comes with a great amount of wealth, social standing, and affluence.

But it still requires a special profile just as a special class does, so would it be possible to not need a special profile if you have earned the class through IC training?

I don't think you can earn nobility through IC progression. It is something you would be born into, or married into. It's not a class and you don't train for it.

It's a special profile because it comes with some perks, just like a special class would.

Regarding your character's progression, it would most likely be best to assume that if it requires permission for a character profile that it most likely requires permission to acquire it within roleplay. You'd probably want to make a thread rather than just ask a specific staff member because then you'd have a visible thread to reference once/if approved.

Blackstones Lord wasn't even a grunt when he became Noble Lord, so I just assumed.

And if you were married into it after making said character, wouldn't that be character progression?

And yeah Piroska, you are probably right.

Blackstone isn't/wasn't a recognised noble house, just a bunch of merchants who fancy themselves lords. And Stromgarde is a collapsing state with no king, so they didn't have any higher authority to argue with in making the claim. ;)

If you married into it, I think the bulk of the wealth and power would still be controlled by your noble spouse, although I suppose that's up to the spouse's discretion.

I'd still contest the thing about it not being attainable via character progression - if only because my character Mercy, a Tirasian noblewoman since disowned and disinherited, has an ongoing plotline involving her remaining family members being cheated, manipulated or meeting grisly ends so the lands and the title ultimately defaults to her. If she ever succeeds, I'll repost her as a special profile. :D

I do not know how this keeps getting so convoluted. So I shall lay out the basic background right here as a record. House Blackstone was a well off merchant family who converted one of their old mines to an estate after the fall of Strom. The only "lord" was the head of household. They thought themselves nobles because Strom had fallen, Trollbane gone, and they still had land.

There is nothing to politically influence and the former fortune drained. As far as Tavren goes, he became head of household from rite of succession as he is wed to the sister of the former head of household.

Well, don't know if this counts for anything:

Leron was a former noble when profiled. He brought his family back to power by making deals with the Novalights and Seregons. In a way he kinda gained nobility again. As far as I'm aware the Silverfangs are recognized as a noble house now, but with lesser power than the Novalights and Seregons.

And nobles generally require special profiles due to the fact they'd have political influence. That and it can keep a hold on people trying to make nobles. If everyone here was a noble, what'd make them so special?

I feel so alone then as a Noble... *Sniffle*

But another question on the point of marrying into noble houses...

I Casey got married with the intention of her husband becoming the Lord and taking control of the House, would they need a special profile before that could be done?

If something occurs that would impact any character's combat prowess or political clout significantly, you'd probably need it reviewed by the staff.

Nobles require a special profile?

When was this? And why?

Edit: I see the reason, posted above.

I just think it's... odd.

It's been like that for at least two years, Rensin. That was the policy when I joined back in 2010.

Edit: And as explained in an earlier post, nobles have the potential to wield political clout that exceeds that of a normal character. It can negatively impact other players' roleplay, so I suppose that the staff wishes to keep an eye on who gets it and ensure that the character in question isn't too strong.

And I know that it was the policy two years ago because there was some question if Piroska was a noble. She's the head of a merchant family, but they had gained prestige and clout over the centuries.

It wasn't a policy when I was a GM, haha. I remember us making people talk to us when they tried to have political clout, but being a noble doesn't always mean you have that.

Casey for example was a noble... but she lived in Dalaran. She wasn't involved with the House at all. The only connections she had was her blood, and her brother keeping in contact with her. Other than that until recently she didn't have any perks from being a noble.
