I'm going to be a bit unpleasant here and say that I really dislike the whole "faceclaim" thing. It seems just
too easy to just google for some smexy character tangentially related to your own character's race and say that it is what your character looks like. Does one mean to say that one's character looks identical to one's own character? Or that said image matches the general mood and ambiance of a character?
It just... well... feels like so often, people are attempting to borrow the connotations of a nice picture or work of art to make their character seem interesting when they should be accomplishing that through RP. That being said, I would consider it a pretty great goal for one to try to make situations as epic as some images I've seen people borrow for their characters happen in-game. We could use more action around here.
IMO, images not made with one's own character design (whether by one's own hand, or as a gift/commission piece) should be referenced with very specific aspects in mind. For example, I'd reference the head of the subject in
this image if I were trying to get across the general visual impact of a female draenei with prominent head ridges. Sometimes certain ideas really don't quite click as well in my mind unless I have some kind of visual for it.
