How to Hug a Tree In Six Easy Steps - A Night Elf Guide
The night elves, or kaldorei ("Children of the Stars" in their native tongue of Darnassian), have a long and fascinating history. Native to the western continent of Kalimdor, the night elves ended a long period of seclusion at the end of the Third War and became members of the Alliance.

Spoiler:
Okay, I know this is unexpected from someone who makes fun of Elves so much, but I'm one of those that make fun of races he likes. And I do like Nelves and felt like making a guide, the history and Culture I'll admit I copy&pasted over but will work on it later. So yeah, this is a WIP and would LOVE feedback before this is put in the guides section, if it ever gets good enough :)

1. The Introduction
The kaldorei were an ancient and reclusive race born during the waking of the world. Their ancient heritage has shaped them into a devoted warrior race, with a reverence for nature and animistic mystical forces. The kaldorei are practical but superstitious, and often a paradox. They are a people possessed with a deep spiritual passion and a desire to find solace. In the time before, the kaldorei were immortal. Their powerful magic was recklessly unleashed by the Quel'Dorei (High Elves), who believed they were superior to other kaldorei and dominated the arcane with unmatched skill. This careless use of magic may have allowed the Burning Legion (Evil Demons from Outland, rawr!) to invade the world, and finally led to a catastrophic battle known as the War of the Ancients.

This battle changed the face of Azeroth for all time, and resulted in the creation of the continents of the world, tearing the land apart and forming the vast nexus of energy at the center of the ocean known as the Maelstorm (You know, that big circly thing? Yeah that!). The night elves (Kaeldorei) are honorable to a fault, and they are a just and sometimes compassionate people. Still, they do not trust many of the lesser races of the world, whom they see as foolish and too short-lived to recall the mistakes they made in the past (RACIST TREE HUGGERS!). Many of the night elves consider it their duty to ensure the safety and balance of the world. Because of this perceived air of superiority, many of the younger races mistrust the night elves (Lot of unfair ego, no?), if not for their shadowy magic then for their aloof and judging demeanor.

2. Their History
At the beginning of the world known as Azeroth, the god-like titans created a magical well called the Well of Eternity by the kaldorei (Night Elf to those who forgot). Over time it became the source of their power, wisdom, and immortality. This immense source of mystical energy shone like a beacon throughout the Twisting Nether, eventually claiming the attention of Sargeras, the dark titan with a fancy show off title - Destroyer of Worlds-, as he sought to claim its power as his own.

War of the old Geezers- Ancients.
And so the goody goody hippies got corrupted, just proves not everyone's perfect, Sargeras managed to the most over powered of all the kaldorei, the one who now even has a zone named after her, Azshara. Sargeras convinced Azshara and her most loyal lackey- assistant, the Lord Counselor Xavius, to open a gateway to Azeroth (Bad elf, bad!) so that this almighty god come forth and trick- bless the whole kaldorei race and killing off any races unworthy (How can you deny such a awsome request?!). In their insolence, those born to nobility (stupid nobles), the Highborne (and I thought they were high on mana *shrug*)sought to use and control this source of unimaginable power and unspeakable evil; and for their pride, they were consumed by the magic they so eagerly wished to wield. (What do we learn out of this, kids? Don't be greedy.)

As the portal into the mortal world grew larger, Sargeras sent ever more numerous "emissaries" to aid with the portal and bring the word of their god from the beyond. These demons were members of Sargeras's immortal army, known as the Burning Legion (ring any bells?). As the portal grew close to its completion to allow the dark titan entry to Azeroth, a small band of kaldorei led by Malfurion Stormrage (Mean little brother of the most awsome Elf ever, Illidan), the first druid, realized the threat posed to their entire world by this nameless evil and the now crazy Azshara. Realizing his seemingly imminent victory could be threatened by these few elves, Sargeras commanded that his Legion make war upon Azeroth and destroy the unworthy, which included the entirety of the kaldorei race.

As war raged across the young world, many protectors of the world emerged to aid the young Malfurion Stormrage in closing this portal to the Twisting Nether and the malevolence which now stood poised to destroy them all. The demi-god Cenarius, the ancients, and the powerful dragonflights clashed head on with the advancing legion. Having learned much about the power and beauty of nature from his shan'do (thats hippy- Druid trainer, for those who didn't know), Cenarius, Malfurion was able to disrupt the nearly completed portal spell and close his world off from Sargeras.

THE SUNDERING! Dun dun dunnn ping!
With so much power in flux, the Well of Eternity went KABLOOIE! (I mean KABOOM!), sending many many to a horrible DOOM! Many kaldorei were dragged to the bottom of the sea, only to be twisted and transformed into the fishies now known as the Naga. The catastrophe tore the continent apart into three sections, and left a permanent storm known as the Maelstrom (Reminds me of Mailstorm... RUN AWAY! MILLIONS OF ENVELOPES ARE ATTACKING!) where the well once stood. With the majority of the Highborne dead (Thank you and good riddance, stupid nobles), the kaldorei turned away from their arcane legacy and began a new culture focusing on attunement with nature and their surroundings.

The surviving Highborne tried to assimilate into the new druidic society, but over time they could not ignore the burning addiction to magic their whole race suffered from. The Highborne, now calling themselves 'high elves' (What? Did they drown their sorrow in mana and got addicted?) led by Dath'Remar (Now that's...a mouthfull!) left Kalimdor by sailing across the sea to the new contenent known as Eastern Kingdomswhere they made the beautifull city of Quel'Thalas.

The night elves, as they now called themselves, settled into their new culture, living as closely to the land and its inhabitants as possible. In time, they were granted a chance to continue as immortals when the World Tree, Nordrassil, was planted on Mount Hyjal with the remaining essence of the Well of Eternity. Having established a future for their people, the druids slumbered, communing with the dragon Aspect, Ysera in the Emerald Dream. The druids were bound to the Dream through the Nordrassil and slept for centuries at a time (Talk of a Power Nap!), only to be awoken during times of great need (aww, I hate waking up after a good couple of centuries' sleep). For untold ages, their civilization flourished, forgotten by time. (I just made them sound epic, didn't I?)

Brothers and sisters, THEY HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED! GASP!
The Third War led to the rediscovery of the continent of Kalimdor and the night elf race. The Orcs, newly fled from Azeroth and seeking resources for their armies, began a lumber project against which the night elves took great offense. This led to many skirmishes between the Warsong Clan of the orcs and the night elf Sentinel force. Eventually, the orcs and the night elves suspended their enmity and fought alongside each other, along with the humans and dwarves of the Alliance, against the demonic forces of Archimonde, a colossal lieutenant of the Burning Legion and a Draenei that simply loves hugging trees as well.

3. Culture
The night elves are a people who have dedicated their individual lives, as well as the very organization of their entire society, in the pursuit of the protection of the natural world. They are at one with the subtle ebb and flow of the Kalimdor forests they call home. The Druids of their people spent ages walking in a spectral realm guarded by the great Green Dragon Ysera the Dreamer known as the Emerald Dream. The night elves were once immortal but after the Third War, they gave up their immortal nature to defeat Archimonde and were forced to fully rejoin the world and fight for its survival. Though the night elves venerate and honor many creatures, Moon Goddess Elune is honored above all others.

Faith (Part of Culture)
The night elves worship the Ancients, who are nature deities attuned to the forest and the hunt. Elune the moon goddess and Malorne the Waywatcher are the most prominent figures of worship. While Cenarius has died, and the night elves will never forgive the orcs for this, his children live on and gain power each passing year. The night elves venerate the children of Cenarius as he was venerated, and perhaps one day these children of the slain demigod will aid the night elves in repaying the orcs for the transgressions of the past.

Some Night Elves also worship Dragons. The Sect of the Dragons hosts many kaldoeri adherents. It is not currently known how many kaldorei actually worship the dragons.

Goverment
The Sisters of Elune hold by far the most power; as one of a small handful of kaldorei organizations to survive the War of the Ancients, and the only one to be based upon aptitude and not lineage, they were largely responsible for the establishment of the new government after the War's conclusion. Among their early actions were to reorganize the old, class-based army into the Sentinel pattern used today, and to adjust the order's charter to include public service. The head of the Sisters would be the sole head of the night elf government.

The Cenarion Circle, then still under the direction of Cenarius himself, took no active part in governmental affairs, as their numbers included druids from several other species. Though Archdruid Stormrage did take part in the government on occasion, the druids typically remained aloof.

Though Tyrande is still the undisputed leader of the government, the Sisters are not the only players on the field; power in the night elf government today is set largely across three groups: the Sisters of Elune, the night elf faction of the Cenarion Circle, and the Sentinels. In particular, Archdruid Staghelm believes himself to be a much more capable leader than Tyrande, and a silent power struggle has erupted between the two leaders. Only the highest of the Sisters and druids are aware of the battle that could tear kaldorei society apart.

Technology
Night elves rely on their magic and the benefits of the natural world around them to maintain their society. Their magic is druidic in nature and flows straight from the natural world. They use this magic and their affinity for nature to shape the trees and stone and make friends with the animals around them. It is with these skills rather than engineering, steam power, or metalcraft that they survive.

While they cultivate a relatively low-tech society, when compared to those of the dwarves or Gnomes, they seem to have been able to create some relatively simple mechanical weaponry, such as the large glaive Thrower, a mechanical siege weapon, which they developed during their period of isolation from other races. Though the night elves obviously have metallurgical skills (the aforementioned glaives don't forge themselves), there appears to be no forge present in Darnassus or on Teldrassil.

As the city of Darnassus exemplifies, the night elves are skilled at building and stonecraft. These skills probably date from before the War of the Ancients, when the kaldorei were more "traditional" in terms of technology. It should be noted that their lifestyle is not "anti-technology," but rather one where technology is not the goal.

The Art of War
Rather than drawing from the chaotic and darker side of magic, their's is pulled from Azeroth itself. Stone, root, flora and fauna all are avenues through which their magic travels. Druids are able to change into animal forms, snare their foes with roots or harden their skin like tree bark. So yeah, Druids are OP (Overpowered) hippies!

Their warriors are not to be taken lightly either. The night elves are among the most deadly adversaries to be found anywhere, due to a combination of their proficient skill with a bow, their stunning agility, and the ability to melt away into the shadows of the night. Few use common weapons such as swords, most preferring the mighty glaives (triple-bladed swords) they have grown accustomed to. War panthers, hippogryphs and even the mighty chimaeras and mountain giants have all been known to aid the night elves in battle.

For ten thousand years, all night elven war and "foreign policy" has been based solely on the safety of Ashenvale Forest and Mount Hyjal from outside incursion. The Sentinels, hidden safely among Ashenvale's leafy trees, effectively sealed off the region from unwanted interference for ten millennia. The Sentinel's method of deterrence was successful until the invasion of the Legion-endorsed Scourge; at which point the night elves were forced to awaken the Druids and accept aid from the Alliance and the Horde.

Night elven society has changed since the battle of Mount Hyjal, and the Sentinels now function in an entirely different manner. As the Burning Legion threat has been averted, at least for now, the night elves are no longer considered in a state of war. However, many Sentinels and druids have begun to hunt down and kill Warsong Orcs, as a result of their operations in Ashenvale, and the death of Cenarius.

4. Appearance

First of the men, or males: Since I think it's important that some know this! The men are strong and buff, really buff but not quite as much as a Tauren but still... you get the idea! This indicates both their physical and mental strength. Where as females are also buff, but thank goodness not as much as the men. Any idea how freaky that'd look?! Oh the horror...

The race's prominent eyebrows, long pointed ears and natural aspects imply a feral grace. Skin tones range from pale white to blue or even ruddy red, and their hair ranges in color from bright white to woodland green to lustrous black (Black not being able for players that arn't Death Knights). Night elves have skin colored subtle shades of purple ranging from dark to light, and from almost blue to bright pink. Female night elven eyes glow blue while male's eyes have an amber glow to them. For the most part, they are suited to quick and deadly combat.

Night elf males are very tall, range between 6'6" and 7'6", with broad shoulders and a lithely muscular torso whereas females are far more slender. The men are typically of a slim-waisted yet firm, muscular build including long, muscular arms and large hands, so yeah they're handsome movie stars. The women are quite different, standing between 6'2" and 7' 2" in height. According to the WoW game manual, having a slim, athletic build. Unlike most other elves, night elf men often have thick beards and bushy eyebrows.

If you didn't understand that, the men are handsome movie starts of every girl's dream, and the females are sexy girls of every pervert's dream.

The Eyes
Night Elves have two eye collours, Amber and Silver. It is believed if you are born with Amber eyes you are born with greatness, usually becoming a Druid and usually the men have these, but they can be obtained by training as Illidan's brother who's name I will enver remember did and females with these eyes were rather rare.

Silver eyes are the most common, but that doesn't make those with Silver eyes any less speical. Even men with silver eyes could become Druids, as Illidan's brother who's name I refuse to remember did, as long as they have that little spark in them. After the Third War females with Silver eyes were accepted into the Druid ranks.

Age:
Don't remember if I said this earlier, so I'm saying it again! Night Elves are really, really old geezers- Ancient race, but that doesn't mean you should RP them like old humans "Get off my lawn!" 'cos do that and I'll pimpslap you so hard you won't have a face even your mother will love!

So yeah, Night Elves are considered adults at 300 so it's unlikely to find a young Elf run around, but you never know. Also, important fact, it is impossible to RP being born and raised in Darnassus. If you roleplay a young elf, act like a young elf, if you roleplay an old elf, roleplay like a smarta-...wise elf that thinks everything everyone else do is wrong, oh wait that's old humans. Just roleplay an old elf right!

Naming and Lastnames
Go wild! It can be anything your little heart desires, just don't always expect to be treated seriously. Would -you- take someone named "Snogly Stargrass"? Okay, the last name maybe but the first name... I wouldn't take him seriously, especially not with a straight face. So yeah, names should be imaginy and lastnames should be hippy-ish, I mean nature-like!

5. Relations

Night Elves are basiclly kinda racist, seeing as other races as 'younger races' and 'foolish' but there are some that think good of other races. The Ambassidors of the Kaldorei race, however, see hope for these young races and admire their adventurish spirit, since not many Kaldorei dare to leave their wonderfull homes in search for fortune and loot.

Because of the Orcish invasion to Ashenvale, and the killing of Cenarius, some Elves started an Orc hunt of their own as payback.

6. Extra Information.
IMPORTANT

I am pretty darn sure there will be a few, if not a lot, of people who will be dissapointed in this. But, kaldorei, yeah... They are -NOT- sluts. They choose a mate for all eternity with a kiss, so if a night elf, male or female, kiss you it means they chose you to be their mate for ever.

The parents are good parents, although may be strict with some things since the parents of every child's dream doesn't exist outside cartoons, there's a bigger chance Illidan will become the new Lich King, half worgen, marry Jaina Proudmoore and rule Azeroth with the Burning Legion as his guard than a night elf saying something like their parents always had fights, their father was drunk and slept with others while the mother slaved over a hot stove and did all the cleaning.

Night Elves and Draenei are -NOT- horny sluts, I keep saying this because there are some that may RP elf or draenei hookers. If you wish to roll a char for such a roll, make a human. I'm simply pointing these most IMPORTANT facts out because some may not have known this and/or realised this while reading this here long and boring guide.

Lifespan
Kaldorei live with their parents for a really long time, but of course when they're all grown up they have a lot of wisdom and will live for far longer still, depending if they survive the outside world of their homes.. What? You never know if a bear or something may fall from the sky and one-shot them.

1-299: Child (Youngest I'd say you can Roleplay would be 200, you should have enough information of the world by then... Maybe..)
300-499: Adult
500-649: Middle Age
650-699: Old Age
700+: OLD
(Thank you reliable source)

It has never been officially stated whether or ancient or elder kaldorei will continue to live the average lifespan of a night elf now that their immortality has faded. Though as Staghelm and Tyrande continue to live in what can be assumed good health, we can assume that most venerable kaldorei will live, along with all kaldorei, the remainder of their normal lifespan after the destruction of the World Tree.

Pregnancy and such
The lack of presence of kaldorei children has led some to believe that birth within the Night Elves' society to be a rare occurrence. This is quite contradicting to the blessing of nature that the kaldorei have received.

Interestingly, it could be argued that the kaldorei have a similar stance to mating and producing offspring to the dwarves, being that they see no reason to have children often, and do so every few centuries.

Draenei are also a good example, seeing as they also don't 'breed' often. So there's nothing wrong with Roleplaying a pregnant mother or giving birth and such, but do expect it to be the talk of the week and have lots of parties!

But. . . This is all exactly the same as the Night Elf WoWWiki page. Word for word S:

Move him into the sun—
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields half-sown.
Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.

Think how it wakes the seeds,—
Woke, once, the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides,
Full-nerved—still warm—too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
—O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth’s sleep at all?

Just the first part S: I'm too lazy to make the history in my own words right now, still working on it though.

This is info that you can easily get on WowWiki or even straight from the RPG books and WC manuals. How about mentioning stuff mentioned in quests, expand things with your own thoughts and ideas?
