I don't think it's such a good idea. (And I'll hopefully state why and maybe how I think it -could- become a good idea!)

Happy Thanksgiving! (And an Idea!)

I am against it. But... I think that if these are to be rare as hens' teeth... Then some sort of system needs to be put in place to make sure that it is fair. The last thing I want to do is see some sort of new "uber elite" group formed in CotH... We've not got the numbers of a retail server... And if everyone is indulging in custom character RP... Where are the normal plebs meant to rp? What limits will be in place, to say... Make sure no one RPs as a silt crab thingy, or a stormlord? giant, or ... dagrons... What will happen if people select.. Naga, Scourge, or say... Dark Iron dwarves? I don't want to see Naga and Belves covorting in Sillymoon... Or nasty little evil dwarves buddy buddy drinking in Dalaran etc...

Oh, in regards to a system to be "fair"... Once a GM (or team of GMs) have initially approved such a profile... Why not put it up to the general grunt community? Via a poll? Much like the one above.. Yes (why?), No, not yet (why not?), Never ever ever please burn it and take the pain from my eyes! (Please explain?). And if there were a limit over say... a month... For the voting before a character became approved?

Anyway time for me to stop dawdling... I have an assignment to turn in in less than 4 hours, and I still haven't written more than a paragraph. -_-

I like the idea, and applying for such a character would likely be an enjoyable indulgence. :)

can someone PM me and explain Thanksgiving to me? I'm Brittish and don't get it.

Also, can I be a GIANT TURKEY? :D

A thought crossed my mind the other day. Perhaps the custom display ID may not have to always be used for other races. For example, I like some of the human models that have alternate clothes, like a jacket that goes to the knees. However, that would probably be a very petty thing and a waste of going through custom models just to have a different human model.

Also I don't think we should make a grunt poll over someone's character because they use a custom model. I don't think everyone would be comfortable with having the general forum scrutinize their character after the GMs said it was alright.

To the last part...
No.
Nonononononononononononononononononono NO.
Letting the general community decide who would get one of these rare profiles? Dear god no. People would only vote for those that they want to have the special profile, regardless of the character. At that point, it becomes too much based on who likes who and all that. At that point, you've taken power from the GM team about who should be approved or not. There is a reason they were picked to be GM's here.

I've always wanted to try an Ethereal, it would lead to some interesting RP. Backstabbing, mysterious personal aims, all kinds of heists and secret objectives. I think this is a great idea, and at least be tried out to see if it works. If it doesn't work out it can always be retcon'd :)

EDIT: Another race that would be quite unique is the Darkfallen. They have minds of their own, but require blood to survive. One could have traveled south in hopes of living somewhat of a normal life as a Death Knight pretender, since they have similar features.

Perhaps the custom DisplayID could be limited to one such per player, like the old prestige system.

That certainly worked to limit numbers.

Hello people, some may remember me some might not but I still lurk around from time to time to check in on the place that holds a lot of memories to me.

Looking at this idea, I think some of the things it offers might be okay but I'll have to agree with Cressy here when I say that Coth was always the place to get away from the other servers which had people running around as dragons. It was a place where people could come for some good roleplay without having to worry about lolers, or the stuff that you'd see on Retail.

Like Cressy said, it wouldn't be COTH anymore at that point.

Anyway I might be popping on over the next couple weeks for some RP and just thought I'd provide the other side to this idea.

I believe this is only for humanoids, so there would be no dragons.
What can I do you for?

I think it is just the whole concept of seeing those unusual races that has a few (like not even a handful) a bit at unrest. It just wouldn't be the CotH that was loved (and feared) by Roleplayers.

Reading through this thread, I don't really know what to believe any longer. The no side is kidna right. . .Then again, there are some things I'd like to see people RP. Goblins, but they're coming in cata, so whatever, and Warlock companions. All others are. . . . Meh. Might as well not for the reasons previously stated in this thread.

Cressy Wrote:I have seen plenty of times when people are given an inch of something and they take a mile. Which I think will be the big issue. If you let people play an Ogre, Eredar, or Scourge...Will they expect to be allowed to play murlocs and naga, or maybe even dragons? Then what would make -CotH- different from all the other servers?

Kretol Wrote:but a GM may not reply with a decision unless the time has come to allow another custom character in the world and we feel the player could portray it well, or the presentation is not done well (either the idea of the character or if we feel the player would not be able to handle such a unique role, is not an active member of the community, etc).

I know I won't be approving any dragons. Ever. Also, I doubt the custom IDs will break the long-standing policy of players not being able to align their characters with major villain factions. Characters must always be able to feasibly mesh with the setting provided - a setting that is, currently, filled mostly with average Joes.

What separates us from those other servers and retail is our dedication to quality control. Our active rather than passive stance on policy and rule enforcement ensures that retail's maladies will not make it over here. Kretol created CotH with the intention that it be a haven from all that nonsense, and allowing players some customization won't change that. As long as we're careful. And trust me, I will be.

Hell yes! This is a great idea. It's about time this came to the server, I've been waiting for it for so long. Some races that could have the custom IDs are.. Those weird, old looking draenei people in the Exodar. Until cataclysm comes to Coth, we could also use the IDs of the goblins. Those skeleton IDs would be cool too, it can be like.. A necromancer's look or a fully decayed undead with just their skeleton left. The IDs of the Felorcs are cool too. They are the red orcs with red eyes, I believe their in the outlands in Hellfire Peninsula. Taunka's are a good idea aswell, and so are those Vrykul people. But in a lower scale, since they are tall. There was some chick at the scarlet event the other day with a custom ID for her character and she was a Bloodelf archer with red eyes and pale skin? Those too!

Perhaps what is needed then is a list of races/types that are open for play, and the limiting area where RPing the character is allowed. Take for instance the Val'kyr (probably won't be one of the used races but just for an example). RPing that character would be limited to the Plagueland/Forsaken territory since they ally with them post-WotLK, and Icecrown. The character would not be allowed to show up in most of the other parts of Azeroth such as Booty Bay, or in Orc territory where it is well established that they would not be accepted. Similar rules for other races (ie Vrykul in Northrend). To use the character outside the preset zone, it could require a special profile stating why the character would have any business there.

I...have to say I think the idea could turn painfully wrong. as in, either two outcomes would come of it. We would either have these unusual character's going to the normal RP hotspots despite the fact that many of them would likely be Kill on sight, and if not, still weird to see them there. Or we would have player's with characters that had to organise big moves outside the normal RP zones everytime they wanted to use the character, which sounds like a plus, but it would basically be a rp for that one person, with the others just happening to stumble on them in a big group, which seems metagamey and centred on one character rather than a group.
I think, excepting maybe a surprise appearance fro a GM led version of these kinda characters, it just would be one two far. Prestiges take us far enough outside what's normal to play, and I believe were gonna reach a point where odd and unusual characters actually outnumber, or come close to matching, the amount of "normal" characters.
