But don't lie, planning something ICly and doing it without warning OOCly would be quite neat... Or not.

A lot of people would take it differently. Many who claim to be okay with it would be ticked if it were actually used against them without warning.

I for one know I'm going to have my Gilneans use words that no one who isn't a Gilnean would understand. Likewise, they would be confused by Stormwind or Kul Tiran slang.

Create dialects!

By extension, consider how your character knows their secondary languages. Example: My paladin, Cristovao, learned Thalassian as a scholarly study, from high elves who lived in Lordaeron. This has two effects:

1: His Thalassian is extremely technical, so he knows almost no slang and would be seen as speaking very "proper".

2: His Thalassian is heavily accented from his Lordaeron voice. This is always funny when he pisses off Quel'Thalas native elves!

Yeah would be neat.

However it isn't allowed.

Both TotalRP2 and Tongues do this. With Tongues, you can also create custom language packages and share them with others. I've done that in the past for various roleplay scenarios, such as when belonging to an organization that has created its own language.

Edit: Please note that, unless there has been some sort of major update within the last year or so, the two are also mutually exclusive. So a language pack created for Tongues will not work for someone with TRP2. Also, I think that there is no easy way of creating languages for TRP2; I was scouring the addon's forums recently and saw thread indicating as much.

Why not? The people with whom I roleplay are open to anything and we don't plan everything in detail. If people are open to being open, I see no issue. Furthermore, Character Warnings are a courtesy.

And not all of us use Tongues/TRP2. So, in the end, [Language]<Message> works well all throughout. Sure, it can lead to metagaming, but if you're paranoid about that, just have your character /e says some words in Y(language) to X. and whisper the contents of the message to the characters you know speak Y.

Same here, for the most part. Generally, when working with people who you know and trust, and are genuinely open to stuff, you can arpee in full freedom. However...

The rules on Character Warnings changed a while back. They are a courtesy, but also a policy, as far as I know. So, giving them out is advised. Springing things up out of the blue on unsuspecting people is out of the question unless explicitly stated by them that yes, it's okay.

There was a lot of drama recently over planning something OOC and not letting someone in on it and not fully explaining every detail of the CW.

If it involves character death, then yes, you have to talk with the person you are trying to kill. That's been a rule for years.

Doesn't apply to much else, however. Just instances of people's characters being killed, since that's a big deal, and can be made worse when no OOC communication is present.

I have been told that any sort of harm to a character has to have a CW, unless it's just like taking hits during a fight.

But oh well...

I guess that it just depends on what it is that you plan OOC without letting others in on it that are involved.

Not true. But if someone is to plan out the killing of a character then that other player must be involved in the planning, and they must give their consent.

Character Warnings are like Chat rules when it comes to the community: everyone swears up and down that they absolutely know the rules, but ask a dozen people and you'll get a dozen variations. And each individual will swear that she alone is correct.

Edit: Mind you, a lot of it is due to word-of-mouth and people telling others how the rules get applied. It's not a deliberate thing.

A good rule of thumb, if you're not sure, is to make sure that if you're about to do something which physically affects another's character permanently that you ask them whether or not it's all right, first. Seems like so much could be solved with just a little communication! It's not necessary, but it will prevent drama if everyone is clear and okay with what will happen.

Surprises are usually great in roleplay, but you have to be careful not to tread on strangers' toes.

Basically, the CWs apply in two situations: death, and some form of permanent maiming (cutting limbs, extreme scarring, etc.) You'll also want to be clear if you're intending on something involving sensitive subjects, like sexual situations, gore, torture, drugs, etc. Though, that stuff isn't part of the character warning process, it's just common courtesy.

Mm, on the CWs, my philosophy has always been, "When in doubt, warn them of your character's intentions."

If you aren't certain whether to or not, do it anyway.
