What is Steam? - Steam is a multigaming frontend that can be utilized to manage several games via Valve's Steam network. Does Steam cost money? - Absolutely not. Steam is 100% free, and can be downloaded by anyone that wishes to take advantage of the services they offer. You can purchase games directly with their service, and those do cost money. However, you manage shortcuts of your current games into Steam without any sort of payment.

Y'know. I'd be up to that but I think the larger Civ games are prone to desyncs and disconnects. The games I played on large maps, even with just two others just broke halfway through the game. :|

At the risk of derailing the thread a bit, the games my friends and I have had seemed to be alright for the most part. Granted, we all live within fifteen minutes or so of each other, but they were still internet games. All we can do is try, right?
