Blood Elves and the Sunwell [Lore question]
#16
I agree with timmy's post. It -is- possible to play a Blood Elf who is capable of redeeming themselves and following the Light even if it isn't the most common thing. Although because of our server lore, at this point someone like that would pretty much be called a traitor. But that still doesn't mean that it's impossible to play the kind of Blood Elf who knows that Fel magic isn't all that great.

Server lore will always differ from "true" lore; because we wish to retain natural consistency to the already plentiful narrative options that can be taken; and unlike Blizzard, we actually care enough about the lore to not drive it into the ground to appeal to the base masses. "True" lore is inconsistent, full of retcons, and is easily discarded/overwritten because Blizzard adheres to the idealogy of "what sells more is our lore".

Lady Liadrin and the Blood Knights had a very good, sinister credo when the Burning Crusade was first unveiled. It held a very dark, even abysmal theme of addictions against the dichotomies of racial and magical supremacy - only for Liadrin to suddenly adorn this moment of clarity that the Blood Elves had to be a light-following, kitten hugging race. If we truly wished for this kind of mindset where there is no strife nor struggle; we would've made Highborne openly-playable ages ago.

I'm calling you on this one (/wink). In the Sin'dorei starting zone, there are several kitties running around. Hehehe

They are indeed a kitten huggin' race. As far as light-following, nah, they are still some twisted SOBs. >:+D

Indeed, but ultimately; the social stigmas of the Light make the Sin'sholai all the more subversive. That of itself provides its own interwoven web of inner conflict and moral ambiguity. Lastly, it would be nice if the Horde RP wasn't proliferated by the Light, like it is in the Alliance. Otherwise the two sides would be that less discernable, and the reasons for war would become that much more convoluted.

No need to get so defensive. Like it or not, true lore is something that does exist and is worth mentioning when in lore debates about the direction our server lore is going. It's the Blizzard Entertainment writers that have a say in what true lore is and while not everyone might agree with their choices "because Blizzard wants to drive its lore into the ground", it's still true. Just because our server lore is altered, doesn't mean that true lore shoulden't influence most if not all of the directions server lore is taken. It's important to get the balance right otherwise there is a risk of finding yourself not playing World of Warcraft anymore, but World of so and so's interpretation of warcraft.

The strife and struggle that came from the true lore was the years in between the sunwell's destruction and its restoration. Not to mention, the showdown that happened in the sunwell itself. True lore does progress with strife and struggle factored in but it is easy to miss at times because the stories aren't RP'ed out and things just seem to happen with content patches added. Whether or not the Blood Elves were saved, the fact they lost the most part of their entire population in the scourge invasion and how their city is still a shell of its former self is struggle enough without their addiction unchecked.

These are just my views on matters of lore. They're not going to change cause I value the importance of both server lore and true lore. I think the two should go hand in hand though alot of the feeling I'm getting is that server lore is batting the hand of true lore away without first properly considering what the true lore has to offer. For example.. I'd really quite like to see some internal struggle in the Blood Knight order between reformists and those that continue to abuse the light.

These are just my views. They're not to offend or to irritate but.. yeah. These are my thoughts and feelings.

I can fully understand where you're coming from; and while I agree to a point regarding the "true" lore and the interpretation thereof, it's also important to remember that with the content patches that are added to the game itself; they never truly come with any logical explanation except in afterthought. On the other hand, this server's lore is dictated by everyone's collaboration - which is what immediately will separate the difference between server lore versus "true" lore. I believe that, in lieu with the progression of actual, roleplayed events, is what drives the story to progression by way of unscripted, unrepentant spontaneity.

There has been a lot of internal struggle of the Light within the Blood Knight order; ordeals and events which have transpired for months - which is what carries in part to this overall growing state of fascism that the Sin'sholai have been slowly adopting. It has left a strong divide between old purist ideals and the contempts that the Light has bestowed upon those that have chosen to follow it. If it seems that the "true" lore is being batted away, it's solely for the reason that we value natural progression from actual events that have taken place, instead of being a convenient series of deus ex machinas and retcons developed in a marketing boardroom.

The period of time when this occurred is colloquialy known as "The 2.4 Lore Screw." In more scientific modes, we call it the "Blood Elven Lovey Puppy Hugs Conundrum."

This is actually a pretty good idea, I imagine Liadrin at least would act in some way, we'll need to discuss this and make some new developments.

Perhaps yet another Elf schism under Liadrin? Belore'Dorei (Sun Elves) or something cheesy like that?

Most definitely not.

I'll be honest and say that the Blood Elves are probably my favourite race in WoW, except the Nerubians (yeah, Forsaken stands on an honourable second place) and that is because of their Lore established in TFT where we saw their growing desperation and then acceptance of the Fel. 2.4 was completely phail in my opinion and worked towards a bright future I've come to despise, however through diligent work we have found that things that occurred there can be interpreted in other ways than them becoming the lovey dovey tea drinkers that they near transformed to. However, I love conflict and there's never too much of it in any plot or concept so having a few scattered elves trying to redeem themselves could be a nice add to the pot, with the totalitarian grip Rommath has reinstated tightening around Silvermoon and Quel'thalas they probably would have a lot of trouble to look forward to, which would mean a lot of fun for those who chose to roleplay as dissidents.

2.4 causing the BElfadins to change their views may not be 'likeable' by some who feel all of the race should be... er... greedy/self-serving/what-have-you, but it's still only part of a grander story. I think the idea of having a handful of insurgents going against the --... okay, Nostra just beat me to it. Bleh.

Honestly, I think one possibility would be to have Lady Liadrin (sorry if I mispelled that) break off from the BElves and head the faction trying to redeem themselves - perhaps have that faction join back with the Horde.

I'm thinking she'd go join the Shattered Sun, probably rising to high position within the organization, if that's still around after Quel'Danas reclamation.

Thanks Kretty! I've wanted to get 2.4 the recognition that I think it deserves for awhile. There's alot of opportunity for RP concerning the events that happened within the patch and I think they've been sadly overlooked until now. We'll have to put our heads together and see what fantastic things we can come up with but I'm definitely up for making a reformist Blood Knight for RP purposes.

If we could find some way to make this happen that would be fantastic. It would work nicely with the current political situation in Silvermoon. Perhaps the band of rebels that are against Rommath and the reformist breakaway's could join forces. There's alot of different directions that we can take this. For awhile it would be nice to have the Blood Knight order in Silvermoon but have some very tense clashes between the two 'sects' though. Give it some build up like. If we start pooling idea's I'm sure we'll come up with something grand that allows everyone to get in on the RP. Like I said, I'm up for creating a reformist Blood Knight.

Lets get some idea's goin folks!
