Night Elves, until recently, were immortal. Unlike blood elves the night elves were bound to the world tree and through that bond were granted life everlasting. When the world tree was destroyed at the end of the third war that bond was severed and only now is it possible for a night elf to die of old age or sickness. In general night elven age is confusing but those under 300 are considered fairly young I think. They still have incredible life spans but it is not likely that any night elf alive currently will make it another 2000 years.

Blood elves on the other hand split away from their night elven brethren and because of that, did not posses a bond with the world tree. Sometime during the millenia after the sundering when they began to look less like night elves and more like humans we can assume their lifespans also dwindled. Or we might also guess that they retained the normal length of elven life while the night elves greatly lengthened theirs. In either case we have a reason as to why the difference, the world tree.

Edit - do forgive any mistakes, this was typed from my I-pod.
So uh...what do Aldor Guardian Rifles shoot for their bullets and if these aren't bullets (Laser, chaos energy, crystals etc), how do they reload?
Nub question.

Do all Sentinels serve as guards or do some stand only in the "warrior" position?

EDIT: 'Cus I see a lot of people saying that Sentinels are guards and nothing else, so yeah... I wonder...
Not quite sure I understand the question there, Dilly. Could you explain it a bit more? Night Elven Sentinels are what you are talking about, right?

Sentinels serve in all types of positions. There are large groups of them that serve as the main army for the Kal'dorei. There are the elite of the elite, which are part of the Shadowleaves. There are the Sentinels who guard Darnassus, Moonglade, Teldrassil and everywhere else that needs them. They come in three shapes and sizes. The general population of them are the Bow/Moonglaive wielding ones, the Riders, atop their trusty Sabers and the Hippogryph riders. Yeah, they are cool. Inorite?

Sentinels are the largest group of armed Night Elves out there. They do pretty much everything that is required of them. They are spies, sentinels, fighters, mounted messengers. You name it, they do it.

If none of that makes sense, or has no relation to the topic. Just explain a bit further yo.

----- EDIT *****

To answer your question, Diethe. Simply because I don't like the idea of lasers. I would say it shoots the normal ammunition a Blunderbuss would. However, of different material. Something from Draenor/Outlands that there is plenty of, that they can waste. Probably just a solid rock, that they infuse with something like Light, or something Magical/Elemental. No lasers, I hope. The trigger would be something more like a push, then a pull. Probably at the top, behind the first 'scale' or whatever it is, so it is hidden from view. Yeah, one messed up gun thingeh. That's just my take on it, however. It's your chance to be creative and say whatever you wish, but I would suggest normal ( Maybe infused ) bullets.
The term 'Sentinels' used to be an entire faction before the Night Elves joined the Alliance. The Sentinel Faction comprises of all the Night Elves and all the races in it including Dryads, Keepers of the Grove, etc. When the Night Elves joined the Alliance, the term referred to a sort of 'caste' in the Night Elven nation that was formed from the original Sentinels faction. A caste of elite night elves who serve as the elite guard of the Night Elven nation. Most of them are comprised of the more xenophobic night elves led by Shandris Feathermoon. It is a caste that shares its power within Night Elven Society, with the Cenarion Circle and the Sisters of Elune being power holders as well.
Just as a note, the Sentinels overlap almost entirely with the Sisters of Elune. The Sentinels are all Sisters, and they're the military arm of the female Night Elves that comprise the organization (And yes, only women can be a Sentinel or a Sister of Elune.). Sentinel is just a rank and duty, equivalent to Ranger or Footman. They fought on the frontlines of the Long Vigil, supported by Huntresses (Mounted Elven women) and Hippogryph Riders (Flying mounted Elven women).

Now they're guards and military personnel, as far as their military goes. The vast majority stay in Ashenvale, with some in Moonglade and Teldrassil. Ashenvale, of course, holds the years-long war with the Orcs.
Q : Does the server recognize M'ure's redemption of the Sunwell? If so - is the Sunwell now the source of Light for Blood Elven Paladins?

I think so, yes, though given Silvermoon's new regime and Liadrin swearing allegiance to A'dal and all that, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that some Blood Knights derive their powers from the Light in the traditional sense for Paladins.
I did a search for this and couldn't find anything useful, but if there's a link that I'm overlooking, throw it up here please!

I'd like to know what flying mounts are allowed IC (or what mounts are NOT allowed, whichever is a shorter list). I know sentient beings like dragons (and thereby drakes, etc) are a no-way, but what about hippogryphs (for nelves, naturally), or what other options I might have. My main is a night elf but she lives in the desert, so it's unlikely she would have access to hippogryphs (which I think are highly intelligent anyway and only allow riders out of their own generosity, but I may be mistaken).

Thanks!
Gryphons or Windriders, if this Elf doesn't have access to Hippogryphs. Elves do prefer living creatures, and the alternatives are decidedly nonliving. Though if she lives in a desert why does she own a flying mount in the first place? Wouldn't that make her either A) Too poor to consider it, or B) Unable to care for one in the hostile and generally foodless environment?
Mostly I was just considering the idea, how feasible it would be, whether she needs one, etc. I just thought I'd have a look at the options. :)
Q: I don't know if this has been asked or not, but lore-wise are Paladins allowed to get married/be in a relationship? Just wondering if they had to take some kind of vow to keep them focused on 'the Light'.
I don't believe any such vow is ever mentioned in the game, or in lore sources. But if anyone else disagree with me(and have a source to back them up), I'll gladly admit that I'm wrong.
Paladins live by the light. By following the light, they agree to perfect their own virtues and be true to their emotions. I would say they can marry for it would be going with one of the ways of the light which is making people happy.

A rough and completely lacking of detail overview, but I hope it helps.
