Piken Wrote:Sometimes you can get an -amazing- looking set just by visiting the AH and mix-matching things, and it will look realistic and fit your character, too I'm sure! I've done it many times.

And I absolutely agree =D Randomness always gives good results (I've done it too) ^^

On a more serious note, it seems that the difference between OOC and IC roles seem to have been blurred. It's important to know that difference, especially when it comes to gear and abilities, gear being the topic here. My suggestion: have two seperate sets of equipment, one for RP and the other for OOC use. Also, I would recommend that having overly epic looking gear be considered a minor IC crime, such that those seen with it -should- be asked to change by guards / arrested. Reason? In the Warcraft Universe / most fantasy based themes, clothes or items that are usually 'too good' for the person's background (like, a merchant wearing pauldrons that radiate light, or a footsoldier with a sword taller than him) are usually confiscated. Makes sense, no? Since the king / ruler wouldn't want anyone outshining him / would want the stuff for himself. He / she -is- the king / ruler for a reason. =3

Piken Wrote:Honestly, I'll admit, a lot of the Tier armor can look -really- nice. Just.. not the shoulders or head pieces. Those are the most epic ones. The other parts, they're very nice looking and actually match with other things if you can find them. And kudos to people who have the patience to do so. xD I rarely do.

But you know Piken, I agree with you. I seldom use Tier armor ICly, the last time I did it was on Lorailis and that's the only real time I've used glowing armor. I have used Shadowcraft and D3 Assassins's on him previously, but none of those glowed. I just picked them because of the dark hoods and textures.

I mean, on my most physically powerful and supar amazing character, Maul, I have five different sets that I occasionally alternate between. Not one of the pieces of armor in those sets (apart from a set which is just imposing-looking brown leather armor with little spikes in it) are above level 60, and he still manages to look great.

Mmhmmm.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, they're all greens. Even the set that's over level 60.

EDIT2: Proof to show I'm not lying!

From the top of my head, the hat's Chieftain's something, the gauntlets are Marauder's gauntlets, the shirt is (possibly) primitive mantle, the chest armor is sentinel harness (?). . . And some other doodads.

Move him into the sun—
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields half-sown.
Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.

Think how it wakes the seeds,—
Woke, once, the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides,
Full-nerved—still warm—too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
—O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth’s sleep at all?

That, or we RP that the sparks aren't really there and that there is no other gear that looks like it and isn't OP. Or...we wear that only in WSG or in certain situations. Outfitter and flagRSP is your best friend here, like how Sekh has warlock robes while in caves (or WSG) and normal almost-naked shaman robes in public...or how Lora has a dracula collar and I RP it without the shining light of course.. What I hate most is Arya's shoulderpads because as a Priest, I am limited to Cloth Trollish looking gear (That are REALLY scarce) and it has some sort of blue orbs in the middle. Of course, it's the discretion of the player to point out I agree with Piken on this one, thought there really isn't any permanent solution unless you guys are willing to craft moar items and RP sets. Still, this shoutout is a wake-up call of sorts. I'd be willing to prolong it in 'Recent Forum Posts' for more to see.

Possible.

Well, I try to make my chars as non-OPish as possible when it comes to gear and stuff but yea, one of my chars, Dharma, does have a faint glow on the swords, which I rp as non existent IC-ly.
Anyway, the best thing to rectify this is to simply tell the players in-game. Orrr.... we could have a separate sub-forum where players may make threads for redeeming Tokens and the GMs may advise/check whether they are suitable for the char or not. Don't tell me this idea's absurd too >>
I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.

I think the ocassional over-geared character is a somewhat natural in a fantasy context, just like-over dressing or plain bad taste is in our world. Thusly, I penalise it IC. (It's too bad it's become a widespread occurence)

My troll finds it offensive that shamans use the Loa's blessing to make armor glow and float, my Stormwindian finds it of the upmost bad taste and steers well away, my belf will crack jokes about it -all the doo-dah-day about it. My druid probably hated you anyway.

I think it's more than fine to put on the epic armor before an arena match and then take it off, or during an event mission -but the moment you sit in a pub with it - It doesn't make any dam sense to even be carrying all that dam weight around.

It cries "Character Insecurity!" like a 47yr-old man's convertible black sportscar.
And my chars notice, and I RP them accordingly.

Just treat gear as you treat outrageous over the top outfits IRL.

If Ratchet's tavern is looking more epic than Thrall's throneroom-thing, it's the epic-looking players who should be feeling embarassed. If you'd be in a cheap pub in dam tuxedos and evening dresses as your normal day wear, trying to impress, you'd be preety dam embarassed (or you should be).

Any glow: The glow's coming from within you. You're using up energy to make it glow. That'd put you back into bed and to sleep within a couple of hours of putting it on.

I think a GM ruling should state:
Items do not glow (and such) by themselves. If they do, it is by expenditure of the player's energy, and should be RPd accordingly.

As for too heavy gear/weapons: Same thing: carrying that around will wear you out.

A humble piece of advice for folks talking about gear - IMO:
When talking about gear, maybe try not to make things sound like:

"You must be less awsome than lore figures, who have to be more awsomer than you!", (that sort of puts off) but more rather explain why it can't possibly make sense to be in that gear, as it hardly does for the said Lore characters. (Which is what you're really trying to say each time, I know.)

I thourghly agree with this post.

*Glares at such armor as lightbringer* Don't do it folks, Okay do it when you're grinding or /dnd but in character just don't wear such over exagerated armor. It's just not right! It's not realistic and it's just silly!

If heroes are alive on this server still, they should get the over exagerated but not to exagerated armor!

Keep it cool and keep it real, don't go breaking the story of your char just because you can buy some of the best armor in the game, you'll just get punted 9/10 times!

Me, I like armor that looks good.

Yes, a very, very broad statement, so let me lighten this up a bit. Overly flashy armor does not mean it looks good. Armor that makes your character look like a space marine out of W40K doesn't look good, we all know their shoulder pads are just outrageous. Armor that glows, as said many times before, looks stupid and is very pointless unless your characters armor actually glows. But even then, why, unless you want to be a source of light in a dark cave or a knight in actual shining armor so that while you ride into the sunset you can look all proud of your glowing armor and +What stats.

In my opinion, simple clothes look good, to sum it up. A nice, simple linen shirt and pants will do for me unless my person wears something else, then something else quite simple. Simple, aint it?

I completely agree, I admit that I don't mind it that much that it becomes a pain in the behind. But now that I think of it, it does not make sense at all. I'm glad I made a simple outfit for the squad Ellyn is leading ic-wise out of leather, it looks actually quite good and in numbers it looks better then tier double x armor.

I also encourage browsing the AH people, I'm addicted to it and have gathered.. ..13..14 sets, random sets with all nice looks specially for Ellyn.. Recently I've deleted the ones I grew to dislike, and the bag usage was killing me but heh. Note: I'm not saying to walk in new armor everyday cause that's INCREDIBLY expensive, so is plate / mail armor, especially those. I'm encouraging to look on the AH, and take you're time browsing the armor's.

If gold is the problem, that's another reason to get grunt-ship no? ;)
