How to RP fight, Rensin Edition
#16
I figure I should ask this before continuing to use it. Warlocks, can they use mages spells such as blink, frostbolt, wards, and other minor schools of magic such as ilusion and conjuration?

No unfortunately they cant otherwise there would be no difference between warlocks and mages. And conjuration, illusions and things, are -not- minor sections of magic.
Sorry =/

As I said previously, stick to spells that your class has, but you can use them differently.

I thought this was kind of the point lol. Aren't most warlocks just mages that have delved into a dark side of magic? I just don't follow how the transition to using shadow and fel magic takes away their ability to cast other spells. I also probably should correct that minor magic thing. I guess the proper term is "secondary" as they are not typically offensive.

Not every single warlock was a mage, that then turned to a warlock, the way warlocks STARTED was mages who delved into fel magic, which then created another genre of spellcasters. And if Ice isnt a major section of magic then what is?

Assuming though that the warlock was formerly a mage could they use their old spells? Forget I said anything about minor or secondary, that was just stupid.

No, when they become a Warlock, they give their powers away for more power, or so they think of it that way.

Yes I just quoted myself.

Humans were once monkeys, it doesn't mean that we still live on bananas, swing through trees and eat live off each other.

I've got a quick moment before we head out, but it's interesting to note that the RPG doesn't distinguish too much between warlock and mage. Instead, they all fall under the category of arcanist. As you gain levels, you can specialize in one of three paths: mage, necromancer, and warlock. You can choose to multiclass into one of the other three paths, but it generally comes with a price that limits your abilities in the minor path.

That said, while we agree that the vast majority of warlocks were once mages (it's an overwhelming percentage), we generally don't allow too much variation or overlap between the two classes. Discussions in the past have outlined that this could potentially lead to too powerful characters that would upset the balance many players want to maintain (specifically for combat-based roleplay, I believe). There have been a number of threads discussing this exact topic, so it may be best to search for one of them.

I think that the general justification for why warlocks can't use all of their original mage-like spells is the perverting effect of fel magic; consorting with the fel (including drinking demonic blood) corrupts everything. This includes the individual, his body, his mind, and even the magic that he is trying to wield. As a result, the magic that is utilized is not longer the same as it once was and so results in new and different effects.

Thank you all :) I guess fel corruption would get in the way of everything.

Quote: I honestly hate it when I accidently use the same word over and over again in an emote, and I sometimes don't notice when I do, but I try my hardest to avoid doing this.

Oh. My. GOD. I have that same irritation. I despise doing it. If I see myself do it even once I go on a thesaurus site and pick out a whole host of words to use.

Perhaps the stupidest attack of a warrior is whirlwind. It's just there to make up for the AoElessness of warriors. Geeze. It's way over used, in my opinion, since think about it. You can not whirl around and use a weapon effectively, not even in LARPing. (Yeeeaaah. Don't ask.) But, ehh, since it's WoW, I guess it's fine.

Also, a great guide. I've also seen people with emotes such as
"Me attacks you." Which really tells nothing about the attack, and leaves the defender with nothing to work on. You can just go "Me blocks the attack." Then again, I prefer trust RP more, though I always lose in it.

Another thing I think should be added to the guide is how to make the dodging or block posts after an attack less epic as well. I've seen it a few times where a player just emotes "/e watches as the sword hits his armour without effect at all as he stands still and upright." or "/e takes a lazy step to the right, dodging the fireball without much effort.". I just don't like the "dumbing down" of other people's attacks too much. Yes, I believe you can dodge or block, but even that leaves it's toll on any character. :|

Overall though, a great read. *nod nod*

I haven't done RP fighting. I generally avoid it. I find if I am limited to what game mechanics give us, why not just use that?

Having said that, it's a great primer for making it more elaborate when you do, and I think anyone can benefit from that.

Props to Rensin; this is a great guide. I'd like to think of myself on the more green side of things, but I have days where I just can't help but be red. I'll definitely refer back to this thread.

Only slightly on topic, but I could use a little advice on how to roleplay Death Knight combat effectively. There's just something about the class - perhaps the runecasting or mix of martial and spell combat - that is hard for me to wrap my head around. Could anyone give me some tips and/or examples to work with? It's an area I need serious improvement in. It might be the only class that I feel uninspired to do combat with, despite all the juicy abilities available.
