Updating to Cataclysm
#16
Fun facts about Cataclysm, and why people shouldn't look for it on private servers, especially one that's on a trinity core.

Cataclysm has introduced a new method of connecting clients to hosts. It involves the host generating a random number, and the client being able to meet it with it's own special number generator. Now since this is random, and not based on an alogorithym like in the past, it means that it's unpredictable, to the point where it's almost impossible to break.

BUTDIESISAWOTHERSERVERS!!

Mmkay. So have I. These are servers that run off of 3.0, right? That means they've taken the 3.0 vesion, aka beta, and have tried to cram patches ontop of it to make it "work". Notice how work is in quotation marks. They work like someone trying to make a frozen pizza in a toaster. First and foremost, the point of beta is to test a raw, buggy mess on the general public, so what you have is an unfinished product that's -very- unstable. The patches have a hard time integrating with it, because there is a difference between 3.0 and 3.1, which is released after beta and more willing to take the developed patches than the buggy mess.

Here's another thing. Places like Trinity have all but given up trying to make Cataclysm for their cores. They feel that it's rather pointless to break something this strong when it's essentially a thankless process in the first place. A lot of these guys don't do this sort of thing for money, but rather recognition or for their own personal benefit and study. When there is nothing to gain, why do it?

So there you have it. Don't hold your breath. Please, by all means look this stuff up for yourself. I've researched it to -death-. It's dissapointing, but all good things come to an end, eh? We might have to pay Blizz now. ^_~

I'd just wait awhile longer. Cataclysm hasn't been out for all that long and who knows, maybe something will surprise us. We'll just have to wait and see.

I have seen a few servers (ofcourse crappy since that is what every PVP server is) that use the Cataclysm client however they needed a custom launcer some sort of crack that bypasses something I really do not know much about this but it allows you to log-in the server.

I've heard of one that uses hamachi, but that's just me.

It hasn't even been like three months so I'm not surprised if there aren't any very good results yet.

mangaboy111 Wrote:I see your point, but I have to disagree. Putting some effort, perhaps time, into this issue to solve it the best we can will mean that the out come will be of far better quality than before. Also, leading up to Cataclysm there are many things that need to happen. The cultist events, the slow sundering which didn't magically happen over night.

Alliance taking over half of the Barrens.
The Forsaken killing off Southshore, and turning the Hillsbrad Farms into a sick undead creation Plant.
The Wildhammer Dwarves.
The death of Cairne Bloodhoof.
The rise of the New Horde, under Garrosh Hellscream.
The Attack of the Grimetotem tribe on Thunderbluff. Ashenvale hacked to pieces by the Horde.
The Repression of Westfall.
The Retaking of Echo Isle.
The Purge of Zul'Gurub.
The gates of Uldum finally open.
The Alliance of the Dragonmaw Clan to the Horde.
The Purge of Scourge forces in Western Plaguelands.
The Battle for Andorhal.
Argent Crusade retaking the four towers of the Eastern Plaguelands.
Death Knights becoming more part of the Horde and the Alliance, less regarded as evil.
The Orcs embracing Warlocks and regarding them as powerful allies.
Trolls embracing the Voodoo (warlocks) and Druidism.
The rise of the Sun Walkers.
Blood Elves retaking the Sunwell.. no longer having to sap everything in sight.
The return of the Highbourne.
The destruction of the Park in Stormwind.
Horde and Alliance battles in Azshara (Will the pact between the Orcs and the Elves in Azshara Crater last?)
Horde and Alliance really hating each other now, so we need to be less neutral.
Nagas returning and causing a mess everywhere there is ocean.
Blackhand Orcs burning Northshire, the battle of Northshire begins.
The return of the Defias.
Forsaken taking over Shadow Fang Keep.
Forsaken taking over Pyrewood Village.
Humans being more open to the wilds, to allow hunters, their alliance with the Night Elves paid off.. basically.
Humans being less narrowminded, allowing other races to live in their lands.
Dwarves embracing Shamanism.
Battles in Stonetalon.

We need to take account all of these events. Start adding the hate of the Horde and Alliance into your RP. Start showing that cultists not warlock but minions of the old gods are stirring up shizzle. Nagas retaking the beaches. Less hate towards the Highbourne. Dragonmaw orcs returning. Frostwolf orcs and Undead hating each other. Undead actually following Sylvanas and not rocking about in the Catacombs. The Forsaken Plague. There is no point in upgrading to Cataclysm if no one is going to RP Cataclysm. There is alot more to it then "omg everything is burning because of death wing!" and I am not saying that's what CotH will do, all I am doing is pointing out and making sure that every really understands what Cataclysm means. It's the end of the WoW as we know it. Before we even change to it we are going to have to progressively change what we are RPing, which I know is hard. But it can be a good change, something new, something fresh.

I hope you understand what I am trying to get to.
Peace.

Well, we don't need a bunch of NPCs showing us how to roleplay. We just need...

I never said use NPCs to tell us how to RP. The reality is that it's the story line of Warcraft, the very thing we are RPing, which is nicely open for lots of imagination within it. But if you don't follow the story line you may as well go "hey look guys, I have built a spaceship and a deathstar". Ofcourse that is an extreme which no one does, it's just to put a point over. The fact is, in lore, THIS STUFF IS HAPPENING. No point ignoreing it. "But it's boring to play a generic class" no one is doing it, so it's no longer generic. Well a few people are, but you know what I mean? Neutral RP is becoming stagnant. It's become a fantasy soap opera. Little development. Well at least that is what it was before I hit France, so if things are moving around, damn.. I missed it. Chucks, anyway it's no biggie.. although I have way too many characters to play through. I think I might stick to one, and develop things a little. A little weekly event thing which I will organise, meaning for me I'll have to go to bed at 2 a.m. because I live in the UK, so it will probs be the week end. Just to stir things up a little, and get things moving.

Everyone will be invited!

The more the merrier. I'll keep the peace, after all I don't it to become a hell hole of OOC drama. Remember Kretol's saying? Heckling, the way of a coward. This applies to this, put you guys out of your comfort zone, something new, something fresh. It might alternate what the storyline is every week. I think 3 main story lines which will include players as sub storylines, these sub storylines might sound less important because of the word "sub" but trust me they are perhaps even more important than the main story line, because with out them it will be like eating pizza with no tomato or cheese or anything on top. Like.. an italian nan bread or something. Haha.. sorry. Anyway my point is, they'll be a Hordian one, an Alliancian one and a Nuetralian one.

This will be further developed in another thread. Remember that it won't be meta gaming if its based around Cata subjects because those issues have been around since vanilla wow. And I'll make sure it's not meta gaming. If anyone goes, "Death Wings minions have arrived!" expect to get /slapped for ten days straight. Twilight hammer have been rockin' around, so have gnolls, twilight dragons, black dragons, nagas, horde and alliance, dragonmaw, murlocs and troggs since vanilla. All you lovecraft fans, will looove this. If a storyline is "scary" "violent" "gorey" or anthing that may offend anyone at the slightest I'll warn you guys way before hand.

Peace! No more talk of that on this thread, my bad. ^^ keep it to cracking the cata nut so we can get to the sweet sweet sweet RP that lays inside.

I should also note that there are several servers it seems that are running a repack of the alpha client, while quite different than the cataclysm we all know, it is still cataclysm. Stability is unknown and it on a Mangos core but it was up and working this time about 9 months ago.

I think something that should be considered is this, if we do not update to Cataclysm, what do we do?

Personally, I'd look forward to us taking the "alternate reality" route, creating our own Future. Maybe Deathwing wasn't awakened, what happened instead?

Left to the devices of an alternate reality could be very fun, oh the possibilities!

Hmm.. This seems oddly familier with the whole alternate reality... Oh yeah, I remember people not wanting that. Odd.

-Edit-

But I am all for it. ^^

You know, if we can't update to Cataclysm, what are we supposed to do? Sit here in the same place forever? Hell no. I'd die before I saw stagnant lore. If we don't get Cataclysm, we'd basically have no choice -but- to create our own lore for the following years.

Very much so. I would like to see us be able to change lore as we see fit (with an approval process, however). Say, if one wishes to take over an area that, in Cata, would become a town for the Horde or Alliance, talk it over with a GM. If they approve of what you're doing, make up a storyline as to why your character would want to do this, and how it would happen. Then, submit the outline for approval. Something like that.

Well, maybe the GMs would be too letting. I'unno, maybe that's just me, but there's going to be a flood of people as it opens, and if it's anything like the last Prestige system, that flood will be bad.
